you are the one who called card a paperweight, i pointed out that it is still a very fast card. who is the one being negative there? now you say you want to sell it and spend more money on getting a new one, so i point out that overclocking is a crapshoot and there is a possablity that you will have waisted your money and your time only to come out with a slower card than the one you have. i'm not being negative, i am pointing out reality to you as you obviously have trouble grasping such things.

Hmmm what would mess it up? Its on the actual dies that makes contact with the HSF, or in the area between the core and the shim?
It's on the die. The die is the thing that touches the Heatsink.

We hate people that mess up their cards and then RMA them. This only messes things up for us. Companies don't take losses, they make it up by charging more for a product.

We had a rash of posts recently about people RMAing cards that they messed up (warranty breakers). That is probably why some of the replies here are kind of negative.

Also, you mentioned an ATI product that is not working properly, there are a lot of ATI fans here that can't bear to see such things on the intarweb. They'll flame you before they let you slander an ATI card. 🙂

Actually since it's written word here on a forum, it's libel, not slander. 😀

Im not going to F$%king RMA it... Did i ever say i would?? NO! The card is a paperweight to me. I didnt not blame ATI, i was simply wondering what could have caused this. This card is not damged because of anything i did, or because it was overclocked. Im not some n00b who doesnt know what the hell I'm doing.

Now why someone would pay $100 for a defective 9800 Pro....wth is up with that?!

Most likely they plan on RMAing it and getting a new one.

I would suspect otherwise, as far as it not being anything you did. Since it worked before you put the new HS on, and didn't afterwards. If the memory controller is on die maybe that got goofed up somehow. Or it could have been related to static. It is weird though. I hope you have better luck on your next attempt if you make one.

Yeah i will certainly make another attempt. Ive put new HSF on numerous cards and never had a problem. If you read my post above, it explains what i think happened to the card.

No, the die is NOT touching the heatsink. There is more then likely cermaic housing or some sort of metal around the die.

The power thing? I find that hard to believe, though maybe thats possible in theory. I really do think it was HSF related. The problems showed up right after that. It was after the power flicker as well, but I don't see how that would just damage the memory of your video card. Live and learn...Lol, or not as the case may be. It is very frustrating to have something go wrong and not be able to explain why it happened. I think this one will go down as a mystery. Though I think its a mystery related to the HSF swap and its just the particulars of why that screwed it up thats the mystery. I don't see how it could be power related.

I understand what you are saying. But i just dont think that an easy 5 minute mod that involves no stress on the GPU whatsoever could damage the memory on the card. Ive done this numerous times. I am not an idiot, although some people seem to be implying that. Its obvious the GPU core itself, and the HSF are working just fine, since it runs at 430mhz just fine with the card barely even getting warm. I dont like it when people say they are being negative because they think I'm going to RMA the card. I would do no such thing, nor did i say i would. And it also gets me that people say I'm slandering ATi. Thats complete BS. I love ATI. Not once did i state that I blame ATI for this. Anyway, could a mod please delete this thread it has become rather pointless.

Where did you plug the fan? If it's plugged into the header on the vidcard, try plugging it in off the card. Probably need an adaptor.

Just a shot in the dark.

Here comes the ATI artillery! Watch out! lol damn fanboys.

Yeah i know why people want to buy a dead or broken 9800 Pro. They can buy a 9800 Pro from newegg. Request an RMA, and send back a dead one they bought on ebay, and get another new card

So, they dont check the serial # or anything to see when it was manufactured? I guess you could just switch the tag anyway...

Because i dont like to settle with stock cooling.
Why? Stock cooling is designed to work with the out-of-the-box configuration. The only real reason to change it is if the noise bothers you and/or you're planning to overclock the board.

Unless you get eVGA...

[OT] I got a Geforce 2 Ultra (64M) and the stock cooling didn't work, so I cut up a Pll HS and attached the pieces to it's RAM, then replaced the core fan with an AMD Athlon (yes , the stock one.) and undervolted it to 5vDC and it cooled fine.[/OT]
