Ms. Whaley, true to her plan, kept her calories low -- on average she consumed 1809 calories per day -- resulting in a weight loss of ten pounds over the course of 30 days. To maintain her starting weight, she would have had to consume about 2000-2200 calories per day. Her nutrient intake was higher in fat than is usually recommended -- about 39% of her calories came from fat (recommended range is 20-35%). Her saturated fat intake was also a bit high -- 13% rather than the recommended 10%. She consumed about 46% of her calories from carbohydrates -- the lower edge of what the guidelines suggest. Her protein intake was about 16% of calories, which is in the suggested range for adults her age. Ms. Whaley's average cholesterol intake was somewhat over the upper limit -- 338 milligrams instead of 300 or less. Her consumption of dietary fiber was, however, only about 8 grams per day -- less than one-third of the recommended 25 grams.

God just read Fast Food Nation and get the big picture and move on. Everybody knows it's bad for you to constantly eat at these places, as your only green intake would be iceberg lettuce that has virtually 0 nutrients in it, as it's 90% water. Anyone else want to ruin themselves? It's alot easier to go to your library and check out the damn book.

That's some of the worst garbage I've ever seen passed off as useful information. I watched "Supersize Me" with the wife. While I believe he really did portray a "bad case" scenario his portrayal is largely accurate. To the contrary, this alleged PhD, RD (registered dietician) CLEARLY misrepresents this case report. It's a horrible shame since no responsible person . . . much less a dietician . . . really believes the typical McDs meal has any place in a good diet.

I can guarantee you that ANY diet that causes a weight loss of 8-10lbs in a month . . . in a moderately overweight person will produce some beneficial health indicators (blood pressure, lipid levels, glucose tolerance). The health of these two people improved DESPITE eating at McDs not because they ate at McDs. Turn the same people over to Spurlock's girlfriend (a vegan chef) and the effects would have likely been more significant.

I was wondering how any professional could write such curiously misleading dribble. So I googled American Council on Science and Health

For 25 years, the ACSH has offered important perceptions on public health and the environment. By increasing our understanding of complex issues, you help Americans make sound decisions about their well-being and influence public policy. . . I applaud your dedication to fair research and reporting.

Arguably the most unscientific, least logic driven Presidency since Nancy Reagan's psychic endorses their dedication to fair research and reporting.

Then they follow it up with an MD claiming Clinton's dietary habits did not substantially effect his heart disease risk. I see why these people write instead of taking care of patients. They are horrible despite years of training.

I think the point being made is about moderation. I think we would agree only a fool would eat fast for every meal.

My response is that it is inappropriate to eat ANY typical meal at McDonald's. People do not wait in long queues at the drive-thru or at the counter to buy a salad with light Italian, a diet Coke, and an ice cream cone. They want one of those high three figure if not 4-figure calorie value meals.

The typical McDonald's meal is macronutrient dense (primarily fat and simple carbs) and micronutrient poor. It's no coincidence that our country has a high rate of overweight AND malnourished children.

Admittedly, I winced a couple of times while watching Spurlock's film. It is indeed overwrought and a misrepresentation of the way most people eat over the course of a month. BUT . . . the evolution of McDonald's meal choices since 1970, the overwelming presence this company has in America and abroad, and the general influence of the processed food industry in America are all bad . . . in and of themselves.

Ray Kroc is not evil and neither is the company that he founded. But it isn't good either. It's an amoral entity that profits from people making bad personal choices.

Disclosure: Pregnant wife LOVES McDonald's. I buy it for her every other week . . . then again I also prepare 2-3 meals a day for her . . . so the toxic dose is relatively low. I didn't want to cook yesterday (returning from a week's vacation) . . . so I ate . . . McDonald's (Le Royale with cheese and a small fry) while the wife had Taco Bell. I will NEVER take my child to a McDonald's. But the wife . . . I don't trust that woman . . . she's been tainted by the Dark Side.

I do :(

Minus the ice cream cone of course because I just can't bring myself to be tolerant of lactose. If I want any type of dessert, I get the fruit 'n' yogurt parfait (Something about yogurt makes it digestible for some reason)

Good for you. Leave the sarcasm meter off . . . I really mean good for you. Naturally you highlight the element that's largely missing from Spurlock's film. Yes, McDonald's advertises heavily. Yes, McDonald's markets to children. Yes, McDonald's french fries taste good. BUT you still have to drive there, order a horrible excuse for food, and pass over your hard earned cash in exchange. Those are all personal choices. Ultimate responsibility still lies with the consumer . . . despite the slick (and misleading) ads.

McDs nutritional info

The yogurt is less likely to cause GI distress due to the high amount of simple sugars (non lactose). They list total carbs as 30g but sugar (sucrose I assume), modified food starch, and fructose are listed items 2-4. Most of the carbs are coming from these sources as opposed to lactose.

So I guess you missed:
1) evolution in the size of portions at McDs
2) rising rates of obesity throughout the US
3) marketing of low quality food to children

Ten years of that diet and she'd have arteries that looked like I-495 at 5 p.m.
So what if she lost weight but trashed her coronary arteries?

Stuff like this is why so many Americans are confused and willing to try anthing. Clinton on the South Beatch Diet, BWE. As smart as he is, he falls for that crap....

After facing those realities you need to look at how this "food" is produced. That alone will make your blood turn to sh!t.
I've been ranting about the proportions for years ("39 sants ta superseyze thait!"). My conservative friend thinks it's funny. He eats quite a bit of that crap too.
