Resale value, reliability and longevity. Fords doesn't have any of that. If you do buy domestic do youself a favor and get the extended warranty. They have more than paid for themselves when I bought domestics.
Family's had 3 Explorers. Combined for nearly a half-million miles. Total recalls: 0. The second Explorer was sandwiched between a semi and a Class V motor home (semi stopped, dad stopped, motor home met Explorer at 45 mph because the driver of the motor home wasn't paying attention) and both my father and his passenger walked away from the accident.
Dad replaced the last Explorer (1999 Eddie Bauer, 200,000 miles, gave it to my little sister) with a 2005 Honda Pilot. The Pilot has been in for service more than the Fords, has already been recalled (transmission), and the dash squeeks. Oh yeah, the V6 Pilot gets one whole mpg better mileage than the V8 Explorer, and the Explorer ran fine on regular, the Pilot pings a bit if we don't use Premium.
I've got 85,000 miles on my '95 Lincoln and so far the only issues in the life of the vehicle have been a shock mount and just this weekend the alternator, which I replaced in an hour without needing to put the car on a lift. I figure the Lincoln is good for another 100,000 miles easily. No interior squeeks or rattles and it's still virtually silent. Oh yeah, I also have 280 hp and 285 ft-lbs of torque in a nice, flat curve from just off idle to about 5,800 RPM and get 26-28 mpg on the freeway depending on how much I have in the car and how much I'm using the A/C.
