Paulson has been very generous offering his forums, pichosting service and webhosting all for free. He deserves more recognition for what he has contributed to the AT community.

I agree :)

I'd reccomend going to ebay.com and searching for web hosting. I got a plan:

$25 a year (because I bid $25)
unlimited bandwith
unlimited storage (as long as you arent hosting porn or anything illegal)
php, perl, my sql, etc etc support
umm... unlimited email accounts for my registered domain
err... a bunch of other stuff...
ftp and control panel access...

for a year now, I have had no problems...

I'm not going to argue with you but unlimited bandwidth does not exist.

If you'd like me to prove you wrong, I will gladly do so.

Upload a 300MB file, post it on AT, get it downloaded about 300 times, your webhosting account will be locked quicker than you can say "oh sh!t".

Unlimited bandwidth does NOT exist.

I learned this the hard way. Ended up having my e-mail knocked out for a few weeks while I changed to a new hoster, what a pain in the butt.

I just signed up with Dathorn. Good golly, Miss Molly! Can you say AWESOME? Super fast response and activation time, superb user support forums, and instead of a newbie FAQ, it one-ups it by having a newbie tutorial program which gives you a nice kick to the pants to get started.

The servers are FAST, the configuration options INCREDIBLE (WHM/cPanel), and by far the coolest option - custom nameservers (i.e. ns1.yourdomain.com, ns2.yourdomain.com). Only $13.50 a month to start. Worth every penny and then some.

They must be doing something right :)

UnrealPC has some good webhosting plans but the best part is that they are extremely leniant when it comes to disk space. Say your account has only 100MB activated, you can usually get boosted up to 500MB or 1000MB for free just by requesting it. I've never experienced downtime with them and email has always been fast (except for when my own ISP was experiencing difficulties of course).

The second thing that I'll have to go out of my way to mention is the tech support. Now, I haven't tried 20 different hosts to compare it to - but I have never even personally had to wait till the next day for a response. I've used it for about 3 years, I've noticed slowdowns maybe a total of twice, both for pretty brief period of time. I liked it also because I was able to add/remove my own email accounts and databases, and my account was activated within 5-10 minutes of finalizing my request.

To make things even better, when I registered another account to go with a domain name I registered with Godaddy - it was all updated in half the time Godaddy said it would be. :D

Definitely godaddy or namecheap for domain registration. For hosting companies go with whatever has the best deal and is most reliable. Tech support is less important. To me, at least. Usually hosting + good support = more expensive

I'm about to sign up with dathorn today. Is anyone concerned about future business? They're pretty small, and haven't been around very long. What's the likelihood of them going under, or overselling, or raising prices?

In eCommerce there are no guarantees, it is a concern that it's essentially a one man show but Andrew is going to hire additional tech support staff 24/7 so he can concentrate on sales/billing.

He's been in webhosting for 4 years I think, most of that locally in St Louis and has been doing webhosting to the general net public for about 1.5 years I think.

If you can afford more I would suggest looking into Voxtreme or HTTPme.com but you're gonna pay A LOT more.

If you don't need a lot of bandwidth, I recommend DotEasy. Total cost is only $25 per YEAR which includes your domain registration and hosting for one year, but it's only 20MB space and 1GIG monthly transfer...so if you don't need a lot of space it's a good deal since it is only $2 per month for everything.

You can also upgrade it to something like 100MB space and 5gig monthly transfer for an extra $8/month which would bring the total cost to about $10/month for everything.

Anyway, I've used em for about 14 months now and have had no downtime or anything.

Not a bad deal, but for $10/mo, I'd rather pay $13/mo through dathorn for 2GB space and 30GB monthly transfer. And reselling ability.

Yeah, their best deal is their $25/year thing. i mean if you just need a personal web site, 1gig is overkill. Hell unless you're hosting big files or forums, 1 gig is overkill!!

dathorn.com is now accepting new customers, 15 accounts were sold soon after they opened the gates.

Should sell out very soon.

Go here for more details.

I am a bit of a newb to this and I have a few questions.
-anyone know about the company that allegedly hosts AT eicomm
-I went to GoDaddy and they gave the option of unlisted registration. They claim that I might become the victim of undue spam. Is this necessary?
-Has anyone used PHP-Nuke with AddAction.net? Did it install easily with their auto install scripts?

Intriguing, Dathorn has almost the same plan I have with Dixiesys for 7 dollars less. Hmmm...

So far Gary's been great though. This I might have to consider. 7 dollars a month is lunch. :)

Poritz - Unless you're looking for dedicated or colo services I don't think eicomm.net is the right choice for virtual webhosting. Besides AddAction.net costs $2/mo more but you get 500MB webspace vs 100MB, 10GB bandwidth vs 3GB, cPanel bluetrix with auto installers and a whole lot more.

Regarding PHP Nuke I just installed it in about 2 seconds, here's a screen shot of the auto installer. Please let me know if you want any other screen shots.

mztykal - Dixiesys and dathorn are two different webhosts. I prefer dathorn because their servers are located at The Planet, you get to use the industry standard WHM/cPanel and look at their prices :D

I know they're different hosts, I was just commenting on how they (dathorn) has almost the same plan I have with Dixiesys. :D

I was thinking about switching, but so far Gary's been great. :D

Plus nothing beats the support you get from Dixiesys.

Yeah I do think that Dixiesys's support (combination of Gary's knowledge, his very active forums, help desk AND their own IRC channel) beats dathorn.

Thanks RossmanI just registered with godaddy and opted for the regular service when I found out that I would not own it with the private registration. As for now the Addaction.net site is very slow in the sign up area don't know why.

Their sign up page seems fast for me.

I use Adivity to host my LAN Party site. They are relatively inexpensive, but more importantly, since November I have had only ONE outage, and that was for less than 30 minutes!!!
