I just signed up as well, I'm very excited about this web hosting!

Can't wait to get the email so I can change the domain info!

Thanks Gary !

🙂

<< Well I took the plunge and signed up. I figure for a Counter-Strike clan website, we wont be having near 5 gb of bandwidth being used including downloads of the different maps. And if for some reason we do, the extra charge isn't too big of a hit. Will there be any problem with a forum being set up? >>

I'm curious about setting up a forum. Sans shell access, it might be difficult for us to do.

I know several people have phpBB running, with the aid of the fileman it's really not that hard to setup.

Guess I'm just gonna have to spend the cash and buy fileman for the new servers since it is so handy 🙁

I actually found using CuteFTP to be easier then fileman. The one reason I need fileman is to setup password protected folders. I cant figure out how to do that. Oh, that and cuteftp doesnt seem to want to copy files right. It moves them instead of just copying them. Maybe its just me and my dialup, but fileman runs slow for browsing stuff and basic moving of files.

I signed up for two accounts www.themintonfamily.com and www.show-n-sell.net (no the truck isn't actually for sale I'm just tinkering with the site).

Two friends setup their sites on 3-95 based on my recommendations www.shinallfamily.com and www.kelly-kevin.com as well.

So far all is good, I really like the hosting, and I recommend SmartFTP (it's freeware) for those running Windows and needing a good ftp client. It allows you to see hidden files which even BulletProof FTP doesn't do.

All in all I definitely (obviously) recommend 3-95, and their support seems very good to boot.

Gary,

My question is this:

I have about 5-6 domains that have very low traffic, and they are currently setup at pair.com using 1 account.

Is it possible to get 1 account, and then setup these domains using the same account?

Or, is a 6 pack necessary?

Thanks!

<< I have about 5-6 domains that have very low traffic >>

Buying a "reseller" account for $10/mo is a better deal than 6 "$3.95" accounts for $22/mo?

Don't think managing a small number of domains w/low traffic (low requirements?) should be very difficult, is it?
Guess I'm just about ready to try it, myself!

Can't say I understand Gary's pricing on this.
May he saves a lot of time by dealing / educating someone supporting 10s of accounts?
Hope I'm not "spilling the beans", so to speak!
A well planned "pyramid" technique?
Hope it makes him a million/billionaire!

Re-seller deal
400 Megs Storage; 6 Gigs Transfer; 10 Domains (max); $10/mo
1GB; 15 G; 35 Domains (max); $25/mo
2; 30; 70; $50
3; 45; 105; $75
4; 60; 140; $100

At $100/month, you can rent your own server.
But then ya' gotta' do all the background / setup / infra-structure Gary has.

A buck a domain?
"Insane"; "How does he do it?" 🙂

😀 As of today I began moving away from the cheap rented servers and colocated 2 servers with a local data center using Qwest/AT&T/Bellsouth bandwidth, that is definitely not the kinda bandwidth you'll see on $100 a month servers! Cogent is what you see on those, and while Cogent has great uptime, I get too many complaints "my site is slow" and it's because the backbone is slow, not the server :|

Currently this approach costs me more money, but it actually costs less after I get about 7 servers active in the colo.

One of the big bonuses about the reseller setup, I pay for less tech support time. Instead of supporting several hundred web hosting customers, I support about 40 resellers on a machine and the amount of profit per machine is nearly the same so expect the aggressive reseller pricing to stay where it is while I adjust the hosting plans just a bit soon.

I've been very busy lately getting ready for this hopefully my response times will get MUCH faster now that I have some breathing room. At my current signup rate it'll take about 5 weeks to fill up server #6 (it can hold a lot more than a RAQ without being overloaded). Plus now that I know the ins/outs of setting up a Plesk system a bit better, I can get new systems online pretty fast.

I also put an APC Masterswitch in the colo, I can reboot the servers via a web control panel and the servers are cross-terminalled which means I should be able to manage them very efficiently and downtimes should be short, assuming the network is solid, and I LOVED what I saw there so I'm very confident in this network.

yaaay got it up and working!!!!!!! thanks 3.95.com

But hey I emailed the sales department many times asking for frontpage extensions... but noone emails me back. what gives?

Try opening a trouble ticket! That's what the email says to do after registering.

Also, i'm assuming it takes some time for the DNS Servers to update my domain name?

Thanks Gary!

When I had frontpage extensions enabled they just enabled 'em and didn't write me, i just checked about 30 mins later and they were up and ready. but if you have fp 2002 most of the templates won't work. Gary said that as soon as someone released them he'd put them up..any eta on that yet Gary, or will your new servers be able to have fp2002 extensions right away?

My Charity's URL is currenlty registered with Register.com (pretty expensive) -- Is there any risk in switching it to GoDaddy.com -- It seems too cheap there to be a real, lasting deal.

Jees, I hope GoDaddy isn't fly by night!
I don't think so, or I wouldn't be leasing domain names through them.
Haven't had any toruble - "only" have 1/2 dozen names there.

Part of why I decided to do business there is that I suspect they are on their way to being the new "Network Solutions" - the defacto Registrar for the web. Haven't heard / found anyone with a lower price / better product / better customer service. If / when I do, I will plan to renew with them "next year".

Gary:

I signed up this AM and for lunch I had a BIG stupid pill.

I've searched all over the forums and I can't find how to set my mail settings for POP3 and SMTP.

Please help!

mail.<yourdomain> as incoming/outgoing server
be sure to check mail once before trying to send, after you check your mail you can send for 4 hours (each successive checking resets the 4 hour send timer).

it is possible your ISP blocks the OUTGOING mail, if so you'll have to set outgoing mail server to whatever you use already.

I have a domain registered through lowcostdomains.com that I use for setting up mail aliases for various family members' email addresses. Extremely handy with it allowing unlimited aliases. Is it possible to setup the domain with one of these 3-95 accounts but still have this same alias capability? If so, would it be through lowcostdomains.com or 3-95.com? Any additional info would be appreciated. 🙂

Hey Gary, the plesk control panel is down and has been for the past few days.

Are you working on resolving the problem?

lowcostdomains.com - $24/yr (incl. email forwarding)

godaddy.com - $8.95/yr + $11/yr for email forwarding - $20.95

buydomains.com - $16/yr (incl. email forwarding)

$3.95/month does work for email.
But at $50/yr, that's over priced unless the underlying web site is of value to you.

I register tons of domains for my clients at godaddy. Their service is great and domain propagation takes just about a day. I used to have domains at doster but they take forever to answer emails and they don't have a number you can call. So far, my clients have been happy with the choice I've made.

Domain Monger - $17/yr (including email & URL forwarding). This is what I have been using before I got my site hosted.

Well, I took the plunged and started my first Web site. Couldn't pass up $3.95 a month! Anyway, Gary, if you're out there, are there any plans to have Real Server installed as a site license? I have a hosting package at work that includes it (OLM - $16.95 a month though) and it's nice to have that streaming A/V capability when we need it for product demos.

OK, I'm basically a newbie to having my own site. Can someone let me know exactly what I need to do (URLs to enter, etc.) to set up a CGI counter? I had gotten the URLs of the website and perl software from an earlier post, but, any combination I try of getting it to work seems to fail. Thanks

Gary, can you post somewhat of a faq, or just list details about hosting you may not have on your site (i see all these protocols and what not but have no clue what i'd need) on your *first* post in this thread- i made it to about page 3 before skipping to the end here =P

basically i want to give my little business a home, but its really more of a hobby, only 2nd to getting my degree, so i guess at this point i dont need a large provider.
do i need to register the name somewhere else or do you provide everything i need to get started? what programs should i look at first. just stick with frontpage? it there a faq for newbies somewhere? even webhostingtalk.com is a lot to wade through

sorry if this has been answered before or already on your site somewhere, main point being for other hotdeal readers who see this thread will find all the info they need at the top. (i also share your value of customers, and as far as my business i want it so even someone's mom will be able to use my services easily =D )

Edit; oops MarkUsG3 is the poster. maybe you both can write something up =P

I think it's time to let this thread die down. Don't you think? Most of post are question how to setup their site. No longer a Hot Deal post.

I belived Gary would like you guys to post on his Tech Support page.
