Try www.techexcell.com <-- 20/year for about the same thing. I just signed up, so I'm not recommending them yet. It's just the best deal I've found yet.

Gary's been great over the last couple months I've been dealing with him. They aren't big, but as far as I see he treats the customer right. I've gotten my $3.95 worth in just support.

 


I use whizhost, and I've had nothing but problems in installing CGI Scripts.
No luck at all.

Its a fast server, and they don't monitor FTP bandwith.

3-95.com is cheaper, but they're just not offering as much as readyhosting.com. However, 3-95.com limits you to 25 email accounts, but those can be IMAP. readyhosting.com has unlimited email accounts, but none IMAP (to my knowledge). IMAP is good. 😀

Could you elaborate on the advantages of IMAP?
 
I, and several others here, recently signed on with HostOnce.com. They simply offer the absolute most bang for hte buck... $4.95 a month (about $60 a year), with unlimited storage, unlimited pop boxes, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited EVERYTHING.

HOWEVER, and this is a big however, I suggest you do your homework before signing up with ANY of these providers. While I have absolutely no complains about HostOnce, and would recommend them, there are several complaints about them posted in newsgroups. There are even more complaints about ReadyHosting (it seems as though their servers have been hacked many, many times). I'm not trying to start some big flame war here, so if you use one of these services and you love it, then bully for you. I'm just encouraging people to do their research.

Go to groups.google.com and plug in the host names (for instance, hostonce or readyhost) and search the usenet archives for user complaints. You'll find a lot of information.

And if anyone else is using hostonce, I'd be eager to compare notes. Like I said, so far I'm a huge fan, as the servers appear to be incredibly fast and the price can't be beat. But there are several usenet posts about both HostOnce and Readyhosting cutting off users for using too much bandwidth -- even though both offer "unlimited" bandwidth. (They do both warn you in their terms of service that they get to decide what "unlimited" means.)

 
It basically all depends on what kind of risk you want to take. I took a risk with my current webhost and there were some bumps in the road (the guy was having all types of problems with the server and decided to do a server move and basically all of the customer's email/websites were down for two weeks and having major problems/outages for a month). In the end, the original owner ended up selling the business and luckily the guy that took over has majorly improved things, is fair with the customers, and so far has done a very nice job of handling things. Anyway, not to get off topic.. but basically at the $3.95 price, you can't count on anything -- the idea of the $3.95 price is that most of his customers aren't going to use up their full bandwidth each month or reach their disk quota... otherwise he'll just break even or end up losing money.

With a small amount of people, things are always going to be fine and support will be spectacular -- but prepare for some growing pains in the long run. I read some of his posts over at webhostingtalk.com and no one had anything bad to say about it. I'd just be a little wary now after what I went through with a start-up host... it'll be cheap hosting, but when they grow faster than they planned, don't always expect things to go smooth. The way I figured it when signing up for cheap hosting was if they went down in 3 months and I got my money's worth for the amount I would have been charged at a more expensive host, how much did I really lose out? Just glad things have gone as well as they did in the end for me.

...... eek.. hope he was prepared for a lot of people signing up after this was posted on Anandtech. Might be bumpy right from the start =P

Anyway, I don't offer unlimited "anything" because unlimited does not exist. Bandwidth is limited, harddrive is limited, the # of email accounts you can create on the limited harddrive is limited. Rather I go for the up front "here is exactly what you get" approach. There are no surprises that way. You don't have to wonder "when will I go over what is acceptable for bandwidth" you KNOW you can look at your stats and see "oh I'm at 4 gigs and the month is only half over, I'm only allotted 5" no surprises.

Imap is "better" in some ways than pop since your email is on the server and no matter where you check email from, the email is there, this is "good and bad" good if you're mobile a lot, bad because you kind of depend on the server for your email (#1 rule in life, crap happens, even to web serves). We also have webmail available so people can send and recieve email from (most) any browser. It's a very popular feature.

Someone mentioned the 25 email limit, that isn't set in stone, if someone needs a few more email accounts it's not really a big deal to let someone have up to even 100 email accounts, I just set it at 25 since that seemed like a good # for the type of plan offered. Same with the 2 Mysql databases, if someone needs a 3rd or 4th it's not really a big deal to provide that.

Guess I'm gonna owe MarkUsg a few referrals.

No he didn't even send me a link to his posting, I just recognize his handle. Someone who signed up gave a link to this thread as an "fyi" on how they found me so I came over to see where the business was coming from. I don't visit anandtech as much as I did when I worked in PC sales/service.

ah ok. Sorry, couldn't edit my post to say "per forum rules, etc etc".. every time I went back into edit it or view it, I received an old copy of the thread -- wierdest thing. Cleared the browser cache, etc. Seems to be OK now.

Anyway...........best of luck with your company -- hopefully you have the resources for the amount of people from Anandtech that have already or will be signing up 😛 With a domain like 3-95.com....do you plan to always keep it $3.95 (say even 5 years from now) or is that not associated with the price? Just wondering =)

I never would have known about this if Mark had not posted. Thanks Mark! If Gary is giving referrals and since Gary is smart enough to have found this post on A-tech I say screw it, you deserve a referral. The link to 3-95 was not a referral link and Mark is not duping us into registering or anything. It's all very up front.
 
Dixie, you seem nice and straightforward and all, but I really have to question the business viability of charging $3.95 a month. You (and the "unlimited" providers) are banking on people not using anywhere near 5 gigs a month. If they do, I really fail to see how you can remain profitable. I know what the back end costs are associated with giant operations, and even the biggest would have trouble turning a profit on that kind of bandwidth per month per user, given typical support costs.

So, reassure me.
