I know this threads getting a little off topic, and I'm not helping, but I was wondering where i could get some fp2000 templates, I have FP2002, and the templates don't work, since the extensions aren't upgraded yet

How long does it takes to have name server transfer? It's already one week for me and still haven't get in effect yet. Weird?

How can I configure the email settings to have an "get-all emails" (catch all?) email address in that site admin menu?

TIA

<< Okay, now we got all of us anna techers on the web. I know we cannot say the site names because that is self promotion, but what if we tag our signatures with our web addresses??? I would like to see what you guys are doing with your web pages. >>

as you wish

just wanted to chime in with my success story 🙂

yesterday, the cable guy knocked out one of our phone lines, which also happened to be the one that carried the DSL line for our home. I was hosting not only my mom's low-traffic website, but also the family's e-mail. I had a backup mail spool through EasyDNS, but I still did not want to rely on that for too long.

After signing up for a 30 day trial of earthlink, I signed up at 3-95.com. Ten minutes later, I was set up, and I called Gary for the IP address to input into easyDNS. 15 minutes after that, easyDNS servers had rebooted with the new website IP, and since I had a 1 hour refresh time set, my e-mail was back up in less than an hour. I still have to upload the website on my pathetic 56K modem, and transfer the MySQL database, but I have to say Gary's been great and so far everything else has been too.

Thanks!

I'm really new at this webhosting stuff..

Couple questions:
Does it matter who you register your domain name with?
Why are there separate companies for domain name registering and web hosting?
If I register my domain name with a small company, is there a chance that I could lose it?

Thanks guys for the help. Gary I'm really interested in starting my site with you. Hopefully I can get this off the ground soon.

Doesn't really matter who you register with, just make sure you own the name and not them. I just delved into the webhosting stuff as well and I used Godaddy.com for me domain name. I have also used Dirtcheapdomain.com and networksolutions.com. Godaddy was $8.95 per yr, and Dirtcheapdomain.com was about the same. Netoworksolutions was about 30 for 2 yrs. All of these guys also offer web hosting/donmain name registration packages that very in price and what you get.

See this thread about cheap domain names.. That is where I found godaddy.com and dirtcheap.

Not so sure about this, but if its in your name and the company is a registered Domain name seller then you should be fine.

I had no clue what I was doing when I started this but by reading this thread, and the forums over at Gary's site(see post above by me for link) I have learned a lot in the last 3 days or so. I used Godaddy for my domain name which was $17.50 for two years, and then signed up with Gary for $3.95 a month. I had a few minor problems in getting a test page up, but they were just simple novice mistakes. When I sent a question to Gary's helpdesk I received replies back in about an hour or so.

Before this all I had done before was a webpage on geocities, so I'm slowly moving on to bigger and better things.

Yes definitely beware those "free domain registration with web hosting" and other offers. Today's registrar should give you your own control panel to log into where you can change absolutely everything about your domain, admin/tech/billing contact, DNS servers, etc. That's why I like enom so much.

<< Hi,
pacemodels

I am doing exactly what you are with plants and seem to be at almost the same technical level.
I am impressed with dixiesys so far. It has been great for a month now, when i had some initial questions due to inexperience i got a good answer quickly. I really think it is a great deal, i almost wonder whats the catch.

I am using a free ftp program that has been very fast and was really easy to learn. ace ftp2 from visicom media, i think i downloaded it at tudogs.

I am going to do alot of auctions and am not the most organized person in the world. I found this software shooting star/ foodogsoftware.com that was prety easy to use and is very helpful now that i get it. I thought it was good enough that i registered 5 days into the 30 day trial. It also has a simple html editor that can be set up to automatically ftp your pictures for each auction.. a nice timesaver.

I am very busy (with auctions!) right now so i do not go to anandtech very much, (i am really saving a lot of monwey by that!)

I will try to turn on PM if i can in case you have questions.

Hello DNR!

I'm sorry for my big delay... Me too, I'm way too busy these days, not only with eBay, but also exploring and trying to know more about programs features like shopping carts, etc... Not to mention that I'm trying to contact toy makers and its distributors, otherwise, I will have nothing to sell! And of course, I have another job, the real one. I have been reading this tread and I think I have nothing to lose. Garry seems to be a honest person as well so I have just registered(yesterday night). I hope I will have news from him because I have just paid the 3.95 bill but I'm waiting for Garry reply so I will pay for the registration domain, and then everything will be setuped.

Tel me what you sell one eBay, DNR?? Thanks for the tips for a FTP program, etc..!! Its really appreciated.

Regards, Pacemodels.

p.s any deals to get a demo or a FREE shopping cart easy to use(for me and for costumers?)? For the future I'm planning to pay for one, but for a try, I prefer not to invest money on it.

p.p.s any other feature for an online hobby shop that would be usefull?

Don't know if any of this info has been posted but, I just signed up. It DOES have myPhpAdmin and if you pay for a full year, you get 2 months free.

Thanks for the Info, GOTCOMPUTERS!

I have just received an e-mail from godaddy... And I can now, have access to my manager account...

What they mean by name server(Register a name server)? I have consulted their FAQ, but unfortunately, I have no clue about their explaination

What is the difference between a domain name and a name server??

Sorry if the question is silly!

Pace.

Ok! I think I know what that is...

Name server for Dixies is the following? NS1.DIXIESYS.COM, and NS2.DIXIESYS.COM... How dumb I'am.

But... should I also write (at the "register a name server") the I.P. 216.40.203.11 or with NS1.dixiessys.com it would be enough???

also what is the host name? What should I wrote in the place of the x's below?

Host Name: xxxx.KARMODELS.COM IP Address: . .

Thanks.

just use the names (ns1 & ns2) for the name servers, dont worry about the ip's...

Hello AphexII,

This is what I got when I filled the infos( Host name: NS1.karmodels.com) :

Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'

Type mismatch: 'CInt'

/nameServer_inc.asp, line 100

A Domain Name Server is a phone book, a 411, so to speak.

The Domain Name (karmodels.com) is listed in the phone book.
That entry has the name (karmodels.com) and the "phone number" (IP address) (and maybe email and other info).

Your Registrar (www.godaddy.com) tells anybody who is interested *which* phone book (aka the DNS - ns1.dixiesys.com and ns2.dixiesys.com) is the primary (the Source Of Authority (SOA)) for that Domain Name (karmodels.com). All other DNS can take a "snap-shot" of that "entry", but it is temporary - only valid for, typically, 24 to 48 hours, when a new snap-shot must be made with the new / still current SOA DNS. That is why when changing hosting it can take 24 to 48 hours for *all* of the web (all DNS) to get the new / fresh snap-shot with the new info. The old snap-shots all over the globe have to each first expire before any new info will be sought. Any DNS, however, that didn't already have a cached entry would immediately get the newest info.

I think the www. and ftp. and forum. and archive. and subscriber. and blahblah. are all handled as "sub-domains" that your domain name (karmodels.com) has to process. www. is THE standard sub-domain, it "comes with" web hosting. Additional sub-domains are a further matter that the web hoster for the domain name (karmodels.com) has to specify how to handle.

I love this thread and Gary, and as informative / encouraging as these topics are for newbies (including me), this doesn't seem to be quite the right forum / thread for this kind of stuff.

Anybody got a good / great suggestion where it oughta' be?
Thx!

I signed up 2 weeks ago to host the web site for the Charity for which I am the "Web Site Designer" -- HA -- Boy are they being screwed. But they get what they pay for 😛 Lawyers should not be web site deisgners. Anyway, Threetrees is now on 3-95.com servers and all seems to work great. I just need to re-design the site and make it "more professional." Any constructive or destuctive criticisms can be e-mailed to me at threetrees@ythreetrees.org. 🙂 😛
