Weird - it has seemed that file transfer speed for me through Dixiesys hasn't been great. Even a basic web page hasn't been extremely fast loading for me. So, I checked, downloading an mp3 I had up there, and was only able to max out at ~15k. Then I check the 11mb .mov file someone posted earlier, and get a transfer speed of ~70k, which is where me DSL maxes out.

My files: slow.

His file: fast.

Anyone else want to compare?

My mp3: The Other Fly

The other test file: test

If others experience the same thing, I think I'll have to drop an email over there and check it out.

I actually got more KB/s when downloading your mp3 than his mov file.

I hit 50KB/sec with your mp3 and 55KB/sec with his MOV. Not that big of a difference . . .

Hello to all,

This is my first post and my interest is to create a site for my eBay auctions (stocking images), and later, to make my own commercial site.

I have heard good things about 3-95 in another forum(dpreview), from user, Minh Tran (Thanks again, by the way!). And after reading all this messages (which take me a lot of time! :))... 3-95 seems to be the right choice for my needs. I have also been in contact with Gary, and he is splendid!

As I said this will be to stock my images for eBay purposes, but later, I would like to run a site (I will sell die-cast models) where people would be able to order online in a secure way (is that possible??) with credit card, I would like to run a cart program as well, etc... Nothing really sophisticated, but secure and clean. This is a big and new adventure to me, as I'am not an experienced commercant (although I like what I do on eBay and I enjoy miniature models), I'am also a "super forever newbee" when the matter is internet and computer in general (and I think I will always be!) even if I have access to internet since 1996! But I still able to do some primary work in html, using Netscape Composer (I have frontpage but it is to dificulty to me at the moment), and I use a cheap version of WS FTP (FTP95LE) to make transfers of images and Flintstones age pages. But in the future I'm planning to improve on this matter as designing web pages is really something I like a lot! :)
I really want to sign with Gary right now! But I rather prefer to have a last opinion from you guys!

Thanks a lot, Marcel.

p.s. I was surprised to note that in a forum like this one where opinions are different, that everybody was very polite and informative! This was very usefull for me, thanks you all again! :)

I emailed 3-95's support email around thu or fri and haven't received a response yet. Maybe someone here can help. I've overwritten the index.html file in my web folder, but I still have to go to www.hostname.com/~hostname to get to my page. What do I need to do to make it so that www.hostname.com will take me to my page? I haven't created any extra user accounts, etc.

Thanks,

Bill

were you using an ftp client to get to your site? If so, use the following as your addess to connect to your site: yoursite.com/web

(i.e. mine is lightworkz.com/web) Try this and see if you put an index.html in there, see if it fixes it.

I've been putting the helpdesk in place and there's a possibility an email got lost in the transfer from email to ticket based support (it was getting so that too many emails were being overlooked, with a ticket based system it'll be a lot easier to make sure no one gets overlooked).

Anyway this is acommon problem, check out the forums http://forums.dixiesys.com/ in the Frequently Asked Questions - Answered section under "I uploaded my web site why cant' I see it?"

Ok...actually I renamed the original index.html file then uploaded by stuff. At this point however (and prior to either of my last posts) the only index.* file at all was my index.html, NOT the original.

My Files ARE in the web folder, not in the root you are taken to when logging in.

Any other reasons it wouldn't be working correctly?

Hi,
pacemodels

I am doing exactly what you are with plants and seem to be at almost the same technical level.
I am impressed with dixiesys so far. It has been great for a month now, when i had some initial questions due to inexperience i got a good answer quickly. I really think it is a great deal, i almost wonder whats the catch.

I am using a free ftp program that has been very fast and was really easy to learn. ace ftp2 from visicom media, i think i downloaded it at tudogs.

I am going to do alot of auctions and am not the most organized person in the world. I found this software shooting star/ foodogsoftware.com that was prety easy to use and is very helpful now that i get it. I thought it was good enough that i registered 5 days into the 30 day trial. It also has a simple html editor that can be set up to automatically ftp your pictures for each auction.. a nice timesaver.

I am very busy (with auctions!) right now so i do not go to anandtech very much, (i am really saving a lot of monwey by that!)

I will try to turn on PM if i can in case you have questions.

<< here's a challenge (but maybe worth it)

PostgreSQL hosting is not offered everywhere.. and it could set you apart from all the other hosting providers... I know I'd buy from you in a flash if Postgresql hosting were an option and be willing
to put down 10 to 20 bucks a month to have this...

in the web hosting industry, it seems that uniqueness really helps out. Postgresql could be that for you.

Chatterjee, why would you care about Postgresql if they're offering MySQL? There's not much of a difference between the two.

airjrdn:

Make sure your file is named index.html

Some web page editors save as a default, .htm
That was my problem the first time I uploaded my page to my host.
hope this helps.

Gary,

Tried emailing you twice. On checkout page, apparently your CC processor charged my car but never flagged it as such. Discover says the charge went through and you have $40 of my money. Can you please email me the info for my site?

Thanks,

go to www.yourdoman.com/siteadmin

I emailed tech support a few days ago, and I never got a reply. That's OK as I figured out the problem 2 minutes after I sent it. I have had my sites up for about a month now, and have only had 20 seconds of downtime total. Nice
