3.5 GPA = Not good enough = Parents no longer give monetary support?

My best friend just informed me that his mom said she wasn't going to help him with college anymore because his 3.5 GPA "isn't good enough."

WTF?! That is pretty good, IMO, for a freshman GPA. First time on your own. Lots of messing around and parties. Have to learn how to get your sh!t together on your own.

Hell, a 3.5 is a lot better than I'm doing (though I should be about that range or above now that I switched to the correct major ;):)).

I know this is a sterotypical type of statement, but I wonder if it is because he is Chinese.

Makes no sense to me.

He is. He responded pretty much by saying "fine, I'll work two jobs over the summer and get a job during the school year."

It just seemed like a pretty stupid reason to withold money.

Is he Asian? Asian parents are the only kind I would imagine to be that fussy about grades. My parents gave up on trying to make me a 4.0 student long ago.

A 3.5 GPA is terrible!!

I think that everyone should be in the top 10% of their class, or else!!

Seems good to me, but I'm a Computer Engineering major, I've got to work for my grades. Perhaps if he's majoring in something like Basket Weaving or something I could understand. It's all relative.

heh...my mom used to tell me (when i was in grade school) that i'd be valedictorian some day. by junior high she was just telling me "B minus and above...just don't get anything lower" and by high school it was more like "for the love of GOD just graduate!" ;)

Man, I would die for a GPA like that. :Q (Well, not die. Although I'd shell out a few ben's for it;))

It reminds me somewhat of those people who would cry and cry if they got another below a 95 in a class. Or got all A's and one B in a semester.

I paid my way thru college with part-time work.. started working senior year in highschool. So, I have NO sympathy for your friend. He should just count his blessings that his parents paid for his first year. I get zero, nil, none, zippo. Not because that my parents didn't offer, but I didn't want them to.

that's pretty low. i've taken some film and music courses, and they're pretty easy. especially since it's his first year when the classes are easy.

my friend was also a double major in film and music. he took 22-24 units each quarter, smoked pot like a madman and still kept a 4.0 gpa until his last year.

That seems a little bit harsh. A 3.5 GPA is still pretty good and better than most other students, I would imagine.

This thread isn't about sympathy. It is about a stupid reason for stopping support.

He is intending to work his way through college. He isn't asking for handouts. His response was "fine." I was just commenting on how stupid the reason was.

It was your choice not to take funding from your parents. You aren't any better because you worked your way through college.

I think it is extremely stupid to stop paying for his college because of a 3.5 GPA. That's definately still a good score, and like you said - could be attributed to many factora such as being new there, learning the system, dealing with all the extra responsibility and stress. All sorts of things could be a factor in his first year.

What about those 90%?

Those of you who paid for college themselves, what were your GPAs in High School? If I was parent, I really wouldn't pay for my kids college unless they were getting at least a 3.0.
