yes theyve done it in the past.
black box seems the obvious choice cuz it has a lot of value.
if its not the 29pro, its definitely SOME ati card. esp cuz they have a partnership (unless it ended somehow; doubt it tho)

Forgive the unsolicited question, but I'm not sure I understand what the pro is supposed to be in relation to the hd2900xt. Is it supposed to be the x1900 gt to the x1900xtx?

What ever happened to the die shrink?

it's supposedly the HD2950Pro which is the new mid-range part from AMD. smaller bus at 256bit, die shrink to 55nm (I believe), and slightly higher clock speeds than the HD2900XT. The new card may, but probably won't, bring performance similar to the HD2900xt for around $249 (rumored pricepoint). Supposedly full DX10.1 and SM4.1 compliant too.

All rumor at this point.

Accuse me of hijacking the thread if you wish, but how do you like your 2900xt? I'm thinking of crossfiring two of them now that pices are easing.

For what I needed a 8800GTX was way way too much and the 8800GTS still has issues I was concerned about (texture memory leak). The Card performs perfectly fine in every game I have used. It doesn't get that hot, in fact my system didn't get any hotter after putting it in. The fan is not loud and I don't even notice it much at all. It will overclock to 810/975 with no mods to either the timings or the voltage with the stock cooler.

I only play at 1280x1024 because it's all my monitor will handle but that's plenty fine for me. I can just add some AA and it's good to go.

Crossfire I wouldn't bother personally, not when there's new cards on the horizon like the 2950Pro for instance. I'd wait and see how they pan out before doing crossfire. I upgraded because I could afford it at the time, Dell has a 10% off with paypal payment option deal, and I could use a better video card for newer games.

Frankly, I'm beginning to wonder if dual-gpu solutions, whether SLI or Crossfire, really yield that much. I mean really, no human eyeball will notice the difference between 30 fps and 60.

However, I'm getting a 24" monitor, and I don't ever plan on taking that sucker off the max resolution. I wonder if the extra horsepower would pay off.

i have a 24" dell and had a evga 8800GTS640. performance-wise from my X1900XT256, there as an increase but not much. in CS:S i get fps drops when there are lots of action on screen on both cards and i mostly play just custom maps (some text, some are not). i've asked 8800GTX users and they don't experience what i do so that leads me to think that you need at least a 8800GTX to run 1920x1200.

i really hope that the 2950Pro will give 2900XT performance at a $250 price.

@ Atreus21, i would just get one 2900XT to see how it is then decide if you really need the second card.

CS:S is HEAVILY cpu dependant and the more players on the server the worse it's going to get. You're best bet is a highly overclocked C2D if you're looking for better frame rate in CS:S.

Probably why most ppl with an 8800gtx don't notice that issue you mentioned. They probably have super high end overclocked C2Ds anyway.

you can feel the difference in gameplay but if I were to play a video at both FPS then you wouldn't be able to see it.

The only reason you can tell in games is because it's never 100% constant. You get FPS drops. If you were to play a game at 30fps that never went below 30fps ever for not even 1 frame, you would think it's perfect.
