28" HannsG LCD is suprisingly good looking!

Today I went to Microcenter to browse around. So I saw the 28" HannsG LCD (1920x1200) sitting right next to the 27" Dell U2177 (2560x1440). Hanns was $249. Dell was over $1000. Just looking at the price difference alone, everybody's mother knows one has to be IPS and one TN based. Anyway, I thought let's sit down and compare them both, and pretend that I know nothing about them (or i tried). And to my great surprise, I thought the HannsG looked very very nice! The Dell obviously has much better view angle, and does look a little sharper. But the Hanns if looking at dead center, has a very nice picture. The Hanns look better than all TN panels I have looked at. In fact, if I was looking to buy a budget gaming monitor (first and foremost) that will double duty as web-browsing, then there is no question I'd go for the Hanns. The good thing about the Hanns is that folks who are a little near sighted (like me) won't need their glasses because the monitor is so damm big!

This particular 28" Hanns definitely is making me taking a second look at TN panels again.

yeah me too a lot of time I also wonder if these crazy big 28" Hanns are any good. Even though you see people say great things about them, but you still know that they're TN-based and you kinda say "yeah right", or at least that was my attitude! But after seeing a 28" Hanns side-by-side to the Dell, I can honestly say that these are indeed worthy moniotors.

I compared by looking at the sample pictures in Win7. Played some sample videos... The Hanns is definitely brighter looking than the Dell (which I think is preferable for gamers). The Dell has a dimmer look but also a sharper look.

Knowing that the HG is a TN panel, I bob my head up and down trying to look for that infamous TN gradient shift! And yes, the gradient shift is still there, but it is a lot less noticable than past TN panels I have looked at. Maybe the large 28" size act to lessen the angle, therefore making the gradient shift less. Whatever, the end result is still a good looking monitor. And let's face it, when you look at the monitor, most people look at it dead center anyway; it's not like we bob and weave our head in front of the monitor right? (At least I don't!).

Going forward, if I ever see one of these 28" HG selling on Amazon for say $200, with free shipping (no tax for CA resident!), I won't hesitate to buy! That's how good I feel about it. Now I must say this is only for the 28" HG one. I know nothing about the other lesser HG's, and would not risk buying them until I could check them out them first hand.

BTW, I'm currently using a Dell 24" WFP (PVA based panel). Personally, I think my current 24" WFP looks just as great and has just as good a viewing angle as the current Dell U2711 IPS. I was wanting the Dell U2711 for awhile now, but now I'm just gonna keep this 24" WFP.
 
I'm using a 22 inch Dell atm, but am going to be getting a new monitor this spring. Don't know if I'll buy one that big or not, though that is tempting.

One thing I am curious about is the response times of TN vs IPS. The Dell IPS I was looking at has an 8ms response time, and the Asus TN I was looking at has a 2ms response time.

Are these two response times equivalent given the different nature of the panels, or is 'ms' simply 'ms' irregardless?
 
I'm not monitor expert. But to me ms is ms. ms is a measured of time it takes for a pixel to switch from grey to grey. If gaming is what you're doing, you owe it to yourself to look at a good TN-based panel. Now LCD snobs will always demand IPS, but TN definitely is not garbage like in the old days.

BTW, the 28" Hanns will beat your 22" Dell (TN panel) hands down. I say this with a strong conviction because I'm using the latest 22" TN based LCD from Dell at work (which is not bad looking itself), so I know.

and when it comes to LCD, bigger is always better. Haven't see a human male who buys a big monitor and then says it's too big. Huh, no such concept exists in the human male dictionary. 😉

More a matter of space in the area I have my desk. I'd have no qualms with a 28 inch monitor if I had room. I do have room for a 24 incher, maybe 25, though.

I had an old Dell Ultra Sharp 1280x1024 many years ago now, and the sharpness was amazing, so I was thinking of the Dell Ultra Sharp again. This Dell I am using now, the S22OW, which was the first that came out with 19x10 at this size, is rather sharp as well, but the viewing angle is definitely limited, though for my purposes it is fine since I don't look at my monitor sideways anyway lol, so saving money and going for another TN is not out of the question for me. HannsG monitors are nice from what I've seen of them.

I love mine-granted I've never used an Apple 30inch or Dell but its the best PC related purchase I have ever made and best value too.
Yes it has one dead pixel but I'm happy to live with that and its fantastic for gaming.
 
HannsG do look good. But don't expect them to last. I've had 2 HannsG 27" monitors now and both have broken within a year.
 
i have 2 of the 28's and have built rigs with a couple of their smaller ones with no problems yet...

how/who was the rma through? just curious about grief of replacing if needed...
 
I was up in the air between this 28" 19x12 tn, 25.5" 19x12 tn or 27" 19x10 tn. I ordered the 27", but haven't received it yet. I'm going to have it in the bedroom and watching tv/movies besides gaming. Hope I made the right decision. I couldn't find much info on differences so I decided to give it a try.

When I was at the store, my face was 1 ft away from it, and I'm comparing it to the higher resolution Dell U2711, then yes... you will notice that the HG has jagged edges when you eyes compare it to the Dell. Of course, keep in mind that my face was only 1 ft away, and comparing to a much more expensive and denser resolution lcd.

But the minute I lean back in the chair, with face about 2 feet away from monitor, then suddenly my eyes don't see the jagged edges anymore because the jagged edge come out of focus.

But when I do "look for" jagged edges, they tend to be more noticed when you play a video in a windowed screen. Playing video in full screen, my eyes don't notice the jagged edge nearly as much.

However, when viewing photos, the 2 monitors are just about the same for the casual non-critical viewers. Meaning.... if you're not doing Photoshop stuff... if you don't analyze photos on a monitor for a living... then you won't care. On a side note, the photos on the HG look brighter and the Dell look a dimmer. Dell list its brightness as 350, HG lists its at 400, and I think these numbers hold true in my observation.

I imagine most people who are gonna by a big 28" like the HG will buy it for gaming, and dot pitch at 1920x1200 for 28" is awesome for gaming. Most gamers will not complain because they will be sitting 3-4 feet in their gaming chairs and frag away without noticing why the dot pitch is horrible.

Even for a casual user and Word doc user and coder, dot pitch will be very acceptable. In fact, for people with weaker vision (like myself), we actually prefer a bigger dot pitch because sometimes late in the day we like to lean back in our chair but don't want to wear our eyeglasses to read what's on the monitor. So I would say that depending on your use, dot pitch is far far from horrible.
 
I like mine too. The only thing that sucks is that I had two different models that had their hdmi input go bad. I just switched to a converter.
 
I have the I-Inc 28 inch which is the same as the HannsG except the I-Inc is all matte 100% where the HannsG is glossy on the bezel. I am very very impressed with mine as well. Yes the view angles stink, but when looking at it head on (99%) of the time anyway who cares about view angles. I used to have a Dell U2410 and I can honestly say that if I look at it dead on I can tell no difference between the two. Except the Dell is $600 while the I-Inc is $200 and is twice as big. I like it so much I got my dad one for Xmas this year 🙂 Probably the best $200 or so I have spent in a long time...

That being said my next gaming monitor will be a 120hz and I'm willing to come down in size to get it.

Theres a lot more to a monitor than size. The HannsG stuff is cheap, and for most people, just peachy. The Dell 27" is an artists monitor, and the differences between the two make for a huge gap TO THOSE THAT APPRECIATE IT. Comparing the two is like comparing a Ferrarri and a Mazda ont he basis that they are both cars.

I have played games on my 55" 240Hz 1080p TV, but still prefer to sit at the desk with the 28" monitor.

Response time is also irrelevant as long as it's not something ridiculous like 66-100ms, 3 frames.

however,, ips still best color, and that's the only thing that matters,,..

viewing angles is stupid to compare,, who looks at their monitors from the side..
 
I bought a cheap 1440x 900 hanns g tn panel a few years ago bc it was cheap, amd I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality. It still works great with one of computers.

They are both cars, both cater to certain tastes, both are loved and hated by many. I'd say the Ferrari / Mazda comparison fits good. Although, put more than 500 miles on your Ferrari and you're looking at a ton in repair bills.
