270hp VW Scirocco R could come to US

I thought Scirocco would be priced same as the GTI. But I guess VW wants to play games.
At mid 30s, I can get a G37, 370Z, 3 series, etc. Not riced out VW.

Nice, but 270HP + FWD sounds unwise to me at the likely asking price of mid-$30s.

Seriously. Needs to be AWD for that price.

VW = Audi, owned by Porsche IIRC. Shouldn't be too hard to get Quattro on that beast 🙂 But perhaps they don't want to step on the S4's / S5's toes?

If you can afford and are looking at an S4 or S5 you are not going to get a 270HP VW.

Granted, perhaps I should have said A4 / A5, which IIRC can be configured with some pretty decent power output outside of the nutty S / RS setups.

Another example of Volkswagen's neverending quest to sell yet more Golf derivatives.

Let's see... Golf, Rabbit, Jetta, Eos, New Beetle, Tiguan, Passat, Passat CC, Scirocco, Audi A4 (B6 gen), Audi TT, Audi A3, Seat Leon, Seat Toledo, Skoda Octavia. All based on the a couple generations of Golf chassis.

VW now sells only three unique cars, only one of which is actually a Volkswagen and not a re-badged version of another company's design. Talk about masters of parts-sharing. You'd think with all that cost-cutting and refinement of a single design, they could make a car that can make it to 100,000 miles without major issues.

blah blah... coming from someone who drives a honda, I can see why you would be bitter about German engineering.

the passat, a4 and similar are based on the B platform. golfs, jettas, etc are the A platform. those aren't other companies' designs, they are brands of vw - just like gm and others do. that, and every car maker in the world strives for as much parts-commonality as possible.

edit: i don't like the sirocco. too expensive, and fwd.

old passat and old and current A4 are B platform. golf is A. A != B.

being the same platform doesn't make them the same car though. it's not like a nova and acadian, where all they changed was the badge, grille, and lights.
The only thing all the A platform cars really have in common is smallish, transverse engine. B is midsize, longitudinal [audi 80, A4, passat] . C is bigger [ 200, A6]. D [V8, A8] is boat.

It's a bit of a stretch saying a VW Touran, golf, caddy, and Audi TT are the "same car". two of those aren't even cars. But they are all A platform, and have transverse engines.

Didn't they learn anything from the Phaeton?

In the mid to high $30s, there are so many upscale choices no one is going to want a FWD coupe like that.

I love the look, but you can get the same performance out of an MS3 for just over half the price.
