Almost no roads are 14' wide. 12' is the standard lane width, and you'll see them a touch smaller on some back roads.
Excellent observation, which is why I have stated time and time again that I am never legally obligated to ride to the far left.
People that aren't attorneys have a hard time understanding law. They assume that the primary statement would apply most often, and the exceptions are rarely applied. That is simply not the case. The main rule (stay to the right) is merely a default in the rare occasion that an exception does not apply.
12' is the standard with with construction narrowing down to a possible 10' or even 9' in really bad areas.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that the douchebaggery is STRONG in this thread.
OP, you're whining, but I can understand. Some bikers are douches, but I believe you need more control when you drive with them as they do have rights and the sidewalk isn't a place they should EVER be forced on. If there's a bike lane, so be it, but otherwise don't force them.
As for anyone who mentions well 3000 lbs car or however heavy your truck is vs 160 lb man + bike, who wins? Come on. It's not about that. This is like telling cars that you have to be the road bitch for the semi because it can kill you and motorcyclists that they have to be bitches because cars will kill them. NO. We tell the person more at danger to watch out, but we remind those who are lethal that they need to respect rights so that they do not cause harm. I think this is just a dumb argument. Yes, when it comes to watching out the bicyclist should watch out more because if an accident happens, he's more at risk to injury. This doesn't mean anyone should give up cycling rights that are in place already.
Safeway, you're right to ride the way you do, but to out-asshole people is a trait that will be frowned upon. Pulling a gun to make your point? Seriously, if someone hits you, take down their plate numbers and shout at them for 30 secs and go report him or something. There's no need to hold up traffic for 5 minutes and pull your gun ok?
I used to be a biker but honestly my neighborhood has bike lanes. However when I see people on bikes I do try to let them go even if they're in the lane. I've lived in Berkeley and I've done my fair share of volunteer work in SF where bikers are batshit crazy. Just respect each other and no one gets in trouble. I think the biker attitude in SF is too elitist and they're almost a terrible mob like unions can be. However, I think the result is that bikers in SF have their rights respected in a decent manner where it doesn't cause any trouble if everyone just follows the rules. It's kinda a nasty way to accomplish what they deserve but I suppose it got the job done. Yeah Critical Mass went too far, but I'm glad there's a lot more bike respect attitude out there now.
And all the people wishing each other to die? Seriously, go back to daycare or something.
