<-- will end up throwing $24k out the window for a new '05 WRX, i'll probably wait till the warranty is up till I hit Stage 2...

Yup, 3rd get RX-7s live in a delicate balance. Briliant engine design, and a blast to drive they are, however, rolling grenades.
There is nothing brilliant about the engine design. It's efficiency is very low, and so is the reliability. That light, aerodynamic car gets about the same gas mileage as a heavy, gas guzzling SUV with the aerodynamics of a brick.
My friend's 2nd gen got about 16 mpg, and his friend's 3rd gen got about the same.
You could say it's "neat" or "a novelty", but definitely not "brilliant".

You show me another 1.3 liter engine that can produce as much power as the 13b is capable of and I'll agree with you.

Miata is ok, but what bothers me is it's slow as f*ck. I don't plan on racing everyone, but something is wrong when I go out of my way to get a sports car that is burned by kids driving mommy's V6 camry.
I think for 10K I'd rather get an MR2 turbo, but they seem to be hard to find.

I throw Vette into this again. yes maybe its not as reliable as the other ones but food for thought. Its a Chevy. Parts and repair for it is going to be much less then anything else ESPECIALLY if your talking Nissan or Infinity. The service charges and parts are through the roof. Plus if your good with your hands again its a chevy. Parts are cheap, hop ups are endless, and the whole front end lifts up leaving you with all kinds of room to work on it saving you a ton in the long run. Engine craps out buy another one NEW for around $500 (350 SB thier a dime a dozen).
Vettes can be had for much less then $25K. In fact I would reccomend finding one that needs an engine. $10-$15k for a decent body and under $2k for engine and tranny installed. Then hop the sob up with the money you saved buying american muscle (paint job, custom seats, why not a super charger). It will be an easy rice burner and the girls love corvettes.

I worked 50 or more hours a week for the past month, I can't afford downtime and I don't have time for a psuedo project car. It needs to run out of the box.
True, but that 1.3 litre engine doesn't weigh significantly less than piston engines twice its displacement and the amount of fuel it burns to get the power it makes is higher than for piston engines.Originally posted by: flxnimprtmscl

Used Mazdaspeed? Either that or just buy one and add a supercharger or turbo like I did. I got my supercharger used for $1700. It came with a boost upgrade crank pulley which brings it up to around 10psi. I'd estimate that to be around 215hp at the crank or around 185 at the wheels.

Well you could always get a 2001 for half that. Then you have your choice of one of these:Originally posted by: OS

I just looked and they are a bit on the expensive side, approaching 20K. I think in such a case, might as well get an 06 miata, the power is similar.

M45 Supercharger
MP62 Supercharger
Ubercharger
Turbocharger
As long as you don't go much above 6psi you don't have to "upgrade" anything. You can leave the engine and exhaust otherwise stock. The nice thing about the Jackson Racing is you don't even have to replace the clutch.
