I run my 2560x1440 with a 670. I don't need every setting turned up, I usually just go with what the game detects as optimal. Games run and look fine to me, but I'm not real demanding.
 
I have a r9 290. Most games run fine on max 1440p without AA. Some games I need to pay on 1080p no AA like Crysis 3. 1440p with AA is out of the question for most of the demanding games unless you play indie or last gen games.

If you plan to buy a 1440p monitor then bid good buy to AA. Or start reducing the settings. Or go for 780 sli to play at 1440p 4x but still not for all games.
 
Just got my 2nd 780 yesterday and the boost in GPU power is definitely noticeable. I can pretty much turn AA all the way up at 1600p and still have around 50-60fps.
1 780/290 is enough unless you like to max everything out.
 
Say with a min of a i5 2500 with 8GB Ram rig, if you're not into modern gaming and mainly concerned about watching video at 2560x1440 and encoding, surfing the web and doing everyday tasks, a used GTX 280 (512Bit/1GB DDR3) for $30 is perfect for a 1440p PLS or IPS 27" Display.

I know because I use a EVGA GTX 280 for backup while my R9 290X is down for tweaking running a PLS QNIX 2560x1440 from the cards DVI port between 60 to 120Hz.

I'm running the GTX 280 on a QNIX PLS 27" as I type, watching the news with a WinTV PVR and watching a FLV Movie from VIOOZ with incidents of FF. If anything that old GTX280 has better Pixel Definition on a 1440p IPS Display compared to AMD's Hawaii when watching movies at 1440p - Gotta love the 2560x1440 QNIX IPS Samsung Display for $300 ;o)

Total cost: One EVGA GTX 280 for $30 + one Korean 27" QNIX for $300 = $325 ;o)

If you want more from modern gaming rig with at least an i5 2500 and 8GB DDR for 1440p, supporting 60 FPS+ with 60Hz to 120 Hz display buy a GTX 780 or R9 290 or GTX 280Ti or R9 290X, in that order for a single GPU Card.

So I am thinking about making the jump to a 27" 2560x1440 monitor. I was looking to get some info from people running that resolution already. What card or cards are you running and do you find yourself having to run lower settings cause of the higher resolution. Just trying to get a feel for what I might be in for.

If you are not gaming, something as low as an ATI 5450 with 512MB to 1GB of ram is good enough. I think Visiontek makes a ATI 5450 with a Mini-DisplayPort output. If you are a gamer and running a single 2560x1440 monitor set up, then a Nvidia 660 or AMD 7850 with at least 1GB is good for Medium settings.

The buttons are fine, I do however have the Display Port bug. It wont come out of sleep without turning the monitor off then back on. That does bother me seeing its a $600 monitor, might bug me enough to get rid of it and get an Overlord Tempest. I also thought this being a semi gloss would pop much more than my HP did, but it does not, so another reason I might not keep it. I am using DVI, so no sleep issues, its just IMHO everything should work on something of this price.

You only get the DisplayPort bug (not wake from sleep) if you are not using a VESA compliant DisplayPort cable - most that are included with monitors are not VESA complaint sometimes. The only one I know for sure that is VESA compliant are the Accell DisplayPort cables.

Why do they even include the DP cable then. My HP worked fine with its cable, the same cable does not work on this one, neither does the one they supplied. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Most of the time, the supplier/maker of the cable is not VESA compliant or not consistant. And sometime in a production run of the monitors, some included DP cables work and some don't (in regards to wake from sleep). Only way for sure that the DP will work correctly is if the cables come from a VESA compliant manufacturer, which can cost more.

Pay no attention to posts that say: "If I had a 2560x1440 PLS or IPS display." because they are absolutely FANTASTIC.

Well as of now its either keep it and keep running DVI, or get a Korean one with a glossy and guess what, use DVI. 😀

That's funny because that's pretty much my setup. Only difference is mine is a EVGA GTX 275 while I was getting my 2 XFX R9 290's and everything else ready for the new water cooling gear. Love my QNIX/X-Star so much I'll be adding two more to really stretch my 290's legs in an Eyefinity setup.
 
I'm going go get my display port cable and see if my monitor will come out of sleep.

Edit: Display port seems to be working fine regarding monitor sleep, ie, goes in and comes out.

What more can we say to convince none believers that 1080p is passe.

The GPU Cards can be expensive but not the Korean 2560x1440 PLS Displays. I don't give a s%*t but I would rather take a PLS 27" 60/96Hz PLS Display over any 144 Hz 1080p TN Monitor.
