Thanks for the post GoGeeta 13. AFter 2 rebates, $30 for the ram and $18 for the cdr's, I'm going to get the PNY and a 100 pack of Fuji cd-r's for ~$46. Got the tip for the cd-r's from techb@rgains.

it's fun watching you monkeys get all excited about the volitility of memory pricing.

Get a brain and buy a little extra when the price is low, if you don't use it, you can always sell it ;)

If it's the Elixir chips that they show in the picture, it's probably the cheapest quality ram I've ever seen. It works, just expect no overclocking potential or ram settings tweaking, YMMV. For $30 though a pretty good deal still.

I picked up one of these in an Orlando store and it has Infineon chips. Looks like good build quality. As most everyone knows, RAM has jumped in price in the last week so even w/o rebate it is competitive for current prices....with rebate, this is a very good deal.

Re quality, I've only had one problem ever with PNY, a bad 32MB SDRAM DIMM after I had been using it for a couple of years...by the time it went bad, wasn't worth the hassle of getting replaced. As I think about it, I purchased that RAM during the famous "BB PNY 32MB DIMM for free after rebate" fiasco. I puchased six and got all of my rebates although it took a call. Recall getting their CFO on the phone, nice guy who was very apologetic about the delays in paying the rebates. Said they were simply overwhelmed with the response and had been flooded with rebate requests. Either BB or PNY took a bath in that one.

Oh yeah, meant to clarify a previous post re quantity. According to the ad and also the rebate form, only one (1) per family, not the five that someone else posted.

Are Elixir chips that bad?? The one I got this morning has Elixir chips on; should I try to exchange for one that's got different chips on??

I think what they meant is you can buy at most five at a time. But for each household address, you can get only one rebate.

So you can buy five, then use five different addresses to send in the rebate forms, if you have enough friends/relatives who would let you use their addresses.

Which one is the better chip? Samsung or Infineon?

Also, does anyone know if these could be OC'ed to PC2700 (i.e. from 266 to 333)?

I ordered one this morning via dot com. Then went to local BB where all of the sticks had the Elixir chips. I decided to buy one and try it out. If I don't like it, I will either return it, or contact PNY, since they have lifetime guarantee. Third option, last resort, I can always have American Express "buy" it back from me using the Return Protection Program (RPP). People always talk about the Best Value Guarantee(BVG), which is a great program, but the RPP really smokes! I recently let them "buy" an AIW 8500DV back from me after I used it for 4 1/2 months. Just have to make sure that :
a) you can no longer return it to the place of purchase,
and
b) product is in "like new" condition, including the box & everything that came with it.

I "upgraded" to the AIW 8500 for less $.:D

They're definately not Infineon, but if your not overclocking and you stick 'em and run them through the motions without problems your probably okay. I think we have sent out a few dozen systems, mostly on Gigabyte boards, that seem to being doing fine. We have however RMA'd more of the Elixir's than any other chip I have seen, FWIW.

The Infineon chips on mine has part number HYB25D256800AT-7 rev. A

According to Infineon's documentation (on page 4), this chip is spec'ed at CAS 2.5@143MHz and CAS 2@133MHz. Also, the "7" at the end of the part number is the speed of the chip which is 7ns in this case. Infineon also produces 7.5ns and 8ns chips, so this is one of the best ones they got.

Not bad at all. IMHO this is good stuff.

You don't think there will be a problem with the reciept showing quanity (5) to the same purchaser or has this worked in the past?

I guess since it is 5 different original UPC's it should be okay.

Thanks

Mike
