To answer the question..

I dont know where my co-worker got memtest.. But he does this stuff for a living.. he's our network engineer, and he is very knowledgeable..

There's another freebie that looks a lot like it, though..

Dr Memory is available at drmemory.com or simmtester.com
and it looks pretty slick.. its a free program to stress-test memory.. You boot it on a floppy... (you have to make a bootable flppy, but it comes with everything you need except the disk..)

Hey, thanks everyone.. 512 Mb @ CAS 2@ 133 Mhz all day and Memtest all night.. and *no* problems... Not even a single crash..of anything..

:)

You guys (and gals?) are great!

I am one happy camper! (knock on wood!)

so getting off the point a bit..

Lets hear what people are planning to do..

What are some of the coolest things you can do with lots of RAM?

Inspired by the Lord of the Rings trailer.. I want to build some huge 3D models.. and animate them...

Got my ram today, and installed it. Here is an unbiased, honest opinion:

Abit KT7-RAID, Duron 600mhz CPU Overclocked of course.

Before hand, I was running with a 128 meg PC100 stick of ram, overclocked to PC133 with my system at 8x112 896mhz.

Popped out the ram, put in 2 sticks of this 256 ram.

It had stability problems running at 8x112, so I toned it down. I am currently running it at 8.5x105 893mhz. Obviously my sandra memory benchmark results went down a little bit, but not a very significant amount. (Cas 3 BTW)

In a little bit I am going to play with the settings some more, to see if I can squeeze a little more performance out of the memory. Overall, I would have to say it is some *really* cheap ram and you honestly are getting what you are paying for. However, $150 for 512 megs of ram is an unbelievable deal - especially if you are not a super overclocking freak. Given the choice of running 128 megs of PC100 ram at the settings I had prior, or having this ram (all 512 megs of it), I would take the 512 megs simply because with Windows 2000, I believe the performance benefit will be significant.

That's my opinion. So if you are on the boarder of "Should I get it or not" I would say get it while it's so cheap. Only if you are planning on doing moderate overclocking, and *definitely* if you aren't planning on overclocking at all!

Awesome find, thanks!

Update from my last post:

I just got a new PIII 750 and decided to test the limits of this memory on my Asus CUV4x. the cheap 256MB stick and two older generic 128MB sticks will do the dance at 118FSB with a 4:3 memory to FSB clock. This means 157.3MHz memory bus and at CAS 2:). No crashes for two days. It wouldn't go at 120 (160) MHz. Nice deal!!!!!

It appears that there are four different brands of this memeory being received:

1. Syncmax
2. Speedy
3. LD
4. No name with Triangle logo

The three sticks I received today are the no name with triangle logo marked as follows:

On ea. chip:

OC1C
03241010
32Mx4T5 0047 (or) 0046

On each chip there is also a triangle logo with the letters L.L.L inside.

Two adhesive labels are attached. Both have barcodes.

The larger label has:

PC133256 32X4 UPI
(Barcode)
42761 (or) 42762 (or) 42763

The smaller label has:

(Barcode)
*256M*
3L TEC PC133 A0900110

Can anyone identify the manufacturer or the significance of any of the markings that would confirm speed or CAS rating?

These are going into a MSI K7T Pro2.

I also use Memtest86. It boots from a floppy, and uses a Linux boot loader. So, it has complete access to the system. I am not confident you could do a thorough and accurate memory test from within another operating system. So, I would be a bit suspicious of these other testers that run from within Windows.

If you run Linux, you can download the source code & compile/install it on your system. If you don't run Linux, delete your Windows partition and install it as soon as possible. :) Or... you could grab the Windows installation package at the link below, and rawrite the pre-built floppy image.

It is available at http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86/

Could the buyers of this memory post some facts about the memory?
You can download Motherboard Monitor version 5 or newer (free).
Motherboard Monitor
It gives details about your memory. Click settings/system info, then chip icon.

For example, here is what my generic 128meg, PC133 stick, shows with FSB at 110, and memory running at FSB+PCICLK or 146MHz, and Cas2 in Bios. Duron 600@935MHz.

Module banks 2
Cycle time@Cas2= 7.3125
Sdram Access= 5.25
Banks on each= 4
Cas supported= 2,3
Min Clock X-1= 10
Max data X-1= 6
Min Row Pre= 20
Min Row Actice= 15
Min Ras to Cas= 20
Min Ras Pusle= 45
Module Bank Density= 64
Module total density= 128
Speed= 133

Another good free test for comparing memory speed is Sandra.
Download Sandra
Sandra memory test results for generic PC133 @ 146MHz
The above system scores:
ALU/Memory Bandwidth 524 MB/s
FPU/Memory Bandwidth 632 MB/s

The scary thing is the way they ship it. I got mine today finally (ups tried shipping to wrong address for some reason but that's another story...) Just a bubble envelope without any kind of real structural integrity, could have been snapped in half quite easily, guess that is what insurance is for. Haven't tried it out yet. It has LD chips that say PC133WAB so I would assume it is spec'd for 133. Crossing my fingers with this one. We'll see...

I stil think they could change to better packaging. ;) I returned mine on the 18th an am still waiting for a return email about sending me a new piece. I am hoping the next one will work. First stick kept crashing windows. Tried it in 2 different machines and had the same errors.

This company may have good prices but horrible at shipping. I ordered on 1/13/01. After a couple emails they shipped on 1/18/01 (CSR Rep said they shipped on 1/17/01, what a lie) but anyway, I put a different address down since I'm in college. What do you know, it arrives at my home address, even though my order says the shipping address is at college. Called them up, all they did was refund my 9.99 shipping charge, but my parents have to ship it up here, and that void's the UPS damage claim. So they're gonna have to spend 9.99 or more to shipp it up here insured. Net story- 2 weeks to get ram that ships over night

Damn, I am still waiting on mine. Seattle is not the place to order these from (UPS shows it went out of Washington DC!).

I see they are down to $67, still LIMIT 5. Between getting two of these for $70 each and the Buy.com Kingston deals (64+64+128 for $70)... I'm swimming in RAM.

Anyone else hoping prices will go back up :)

Whoo Whoo! They run fine on my ASUS P3V4X, just as others have reported. I now have a total of 768MB of RAM, 2 of these and 2 Kingston 128MB VALUERAM PC100 modules. I'm running a 700E @ 133Mhz FSB (933 processor speed), Windows 2000 Server SP1. I've managed to fill up all 768MB of RAM (and then some) with a spreadsheet I have, and it is cranking through all that RAM without problem. I believe I'm running at CAS3 on my system, I haven't confirmed (given I'm overclocking the Kingston RAM anyway).

With this much stuff loaded, stability is important, so I'll likely stick at CAS3.

Again, Photos of the Triangle Brand 256MB modules

Nice pix, mrVW. What resolution you shoot at?
Last time I saw triangles like these was in Roswell, NM.

I got two sticks myself. Also disconcerted that it came in an envelope, but it works just fine in my Abit VP6. I only have dual 700PIII's, so it is presently at 100MHz FSB. Perhaps now I'll try something a little higher.

Good new and bad news....

The good news is that I received my replacement memory, and it works fine. At PC133, CAS 3. Not gonna push it just yet.

They charged my credit card for the memory again, as well as shipping costs, saying they would credit it when they received the bad memory.

Well, they got the bad memory back, and credited my credit card, but not for the original shipping costs.

So I have paid

$10 To get bad RAM shipped to me
$10 To ship the bad RAM back to them
$10 To get replacement memory shipped to me.

What a crock... I let them know in an email that they have lost all my future business over the poor way they have handled this...
