I'm getting tired of uninstalling, moving and deleting files almost every week on my smaller SSD. I used to have those big spindle drives and I only do any of that when I reformat.

They are still too darn expensive.

Ante up! You know your 24GB RAM and Core i7 970 were expensive, along with your high end motherboard. Why didn't you go a bit lower end and spend the savings on a bigger SSD? Heck, a Core i5 and Radeon 5670 for a file server? Really?

If you aren't afraid of OCZ, they have some SandForce 2200 based 240GB drives for $300 now and again. Also, right now you can get a Samsung 470 256GB drive for $330. It isn't a super speed demon, but it is faster than the Intel X25-M and (so far) has proven to be as reliable (meaning more "reliable" than any SandForce drive).

the point of SSDs is to be fast at reading/write, aka loading applications. You just have to figure out what stuff you want to be "fast" while maintaining your budget

Windows OS- yes, i want to be fast
Applications - IE/Chrome/FF/Opera-- yeah, so install on SSD
Photoshop - I do a lot of photoshop work, so yeah
Video editing - not as much, install on my other drive
Movies - no need for loading movies to be fast, put on other drive

do a detailed analysis of your workload and figure out what realy needs to be there

You can do that right now! Somewhat. You're basically asking for 1 dollar a gig. The 120gb vertex plus is being sold for $118 after rebates. Buy two and put them in raid-o and you'll have 250ish gigs for less than 250 USD. It'll be slower than some sandforce 6gb/s drives at random performance but you'll still be pushing 500+mb/s reads and writes.

You can also wait for a sale on sandforce drives and do the same. Last week adatas 2nd gen sandforce 120gb drives were 139 after rebates.

Newegg sometimes has those 10% or 20% off deals and that's when I picked up my 256gig C300.

You can wait for a deal or just bite the bullet. You won't regret it.

Well there was a short slickdeal in June for the 256 gig WD SSD for $200 and there hasn't been one since. You could gamble with an OCZ drive Agility 3 240 gig ssd for 260 (after rebate)

You'll have to wait a bit for high performance and reliable (OCZ, I'm looking at you) SSDs to get to 1GB/dollar MSRP. Give it one-and-a-half years.

Yep, I got one of those before they all sold out. So far it's stable as a table, though of course not as fast as other drives. Using as a games drive... haven't managed to fill it yet.

i refuse to go ssd until i can get one for 50 cents a gig. sad thing is, i think once they drop below 80 cents a gig they will absolutely freefall in pricing just like platters did. itll be a few to 5 years yet, but i cant imagine ssd's staying more expensive then platters for much longer. no moving parts is key, they are going to be much easier to mass produce. i bet 10 years from now we will have 10TB ssd's for $200.

I'd run that 5670 in your HTPC and put the 5450 in your file server.

The 5450 does not have enough post processing power to sharpen things up a tad is all. :)

To your question, We are a couple years away.

Sorry... Peer pressure got to me, I broke down and bought a 160GB Intel 320. :|

LOL.. now use it for 2 weeks and change your boot order to work from the HDD once again. Then you'll see what we SSD lovers been trying to tell you guys all along. :)

^?

I would love good SSDs to get cheaper, but I did pay 480 for my agility 2. They are quite cheaper now, though I have heard have had some issues :C

I find it funny how much people are willing to spend on a graphics setup but how cheap we are when it comes to the biggest bottleneck in our systems...

Even at $1 per Gig it's still too expensive in my book.

I will wait extra 5-10 seconds for windows boot up or game loading....not that big of a deal.

Also, stability/reliability issues scare me. I will let others take the $$$ hit and risk.

I take that "$$$ hit and risk" getting a ticket while running to the bank to put in the extra money I gain from the time and productivity increases it affords me.

The ones who don't get it.. are generally the one's who haven't tried it. I have these things on 5 other family members systems who are complete "PC novices" and they will never go back to HDD.

In fact, one system got a virus last week and they had to boot from the original 7200rpm HDD and even the kids were whining about the differences in speed as if something were wrong with the computer. If a 7 year old can "see it"?.. makes you wonder why other's can't. lol

Go to best buy and try an Intel SSD. You will hate having to boot from that HDD again if you decide to return the Intel "because it's too expensive per GB right now".

If I was making money on a PC...I would have it.

I mostly game/surf web.

I've tried plenty of PCs with SSDs.

I simply cannot justify the cost vs performance increase.

Also, I put my PC to sleep so I dont really care for boot up. Even if I didn't put it to Sleep mode.....I'm willing to wait extra 30sec-1 min for it to boot up. I'm not in hurry.

Only other effect is Map loading in games, which again.....5-10 extra seconds will not kill me!!!
