Many can but nothing is guaranteed. when i saw they were locking them I went on a scavenger hunt of all the local shops to find an unlocked one and lucked into a AQXEA 0334(week 34)VPMW 2500+ that does 2.2 gig @1.725 volts and 2.3 @1.85 volts air cooling SK7 heatsink. At 2.2 gig it runs idle temps of 38c and 47c load @2.3 gig it was idling @ 44c and loading at 54c. Odds are pretty good that you may get a good one but as i said nothing is for certain. Of the 3 that i have had a chance to overclock this was the only one that did 2.2 gig reliably. Note the others were in other peoples systems so I can't be certain it was the chip that didn't like 2.2 gig or possibly something else in their system config that was holding them back. big keys are good ram and a quality powersupply to go with that ASUS board.

how's the kingston hyperx that i mentioned.....

and i dont plan on messing w/ voltage

and the case is a sonata w/ the antec 380 power supply

Yeah you're guarenteed. I can do 11x200 stock voltage and right now I'm at 2.31 at 1.75. This chip has 2.5 in it for sure

how do you know if it is unlocked by looking at it?

They have a new packaging.

Don't bet on it... Bartons hit a wall at 2.2 and it takes insane amounts of voltage to get it past... if you want 2.5 you're probably going to need at least 1.9 volts and a water cooling setup... hardly practical.

Yeah I'm thinking so. I'm running 1:1 with 5 3 2 2 on my 3200 and now tryin to find a sweet spot. Best so far is 11x213 = 2.34 @ 1.8. 100% stable but I know once I try 215 and more gonna want more volts, and I don't think I should above 1.8 with my setup now. What do you think Jeff?

Nothing is guaranteed. I know too many people who used 11x200 with Barton and thought they were stable because they could boot into Window and surf and play games. But as soon as I ran Prime, it crashed. I bet lot of overclockers don't use Prime or any stress testing program to test for successful overclock. To them, if it boots into Window its stable.

People also have tendency to overstate their overclocks. Just check any overclock databases.

I would skip the locked Bartons and go for 1800+ DLTC 1.5V Tbred B myself. ExcaliberPC has guaranteed stepping JIUHB:0311MPMW for $65 plus shipping. These are unlocked and you have good chance of hitting higher OC than locked Barton IMO. I just ordered one myself but won't be able to test it out for another couple of weeks until I get home.

Check my sig. Built one identical fur a friend, same specs. Won't do 11.5x 200 though. 11x200 is more than enuff for me. I'm a happy camper.

I have the same question. Is 1.8v for a Barton 2500+ too high?

I have a similar setup. Barton 2500+ with a Abit NF7-S. I am able to hit 2.2 (11x200) but I had to pump up voltage to 1.8v for Prime95 to be stable. Memory is at 2.7. I have 1gb of corsair xms pc3200-llpt.

Prime95 has been running on it for about 9 hours now without a problem. I am going to let it run for around 24 hours to make sure everything is fine.

Another question. My processor is unlocked. Is it better to run at default multiplier and higher fsb or lower multiplier and even higher fsb? Does it matter?

1.8v is fine on air. I wouldn't go too much above that.

Higher FSB is preferred over high multi if you can achieve it.

I personally don't go above 1.75 volts, but others use 1.85 seemingly without any trouble.

How right you are here!! I changed the FSb in my 2500+ to 200, and it was "stable" as I booted into windows, installed programs, copied files, tec. When I decided to stress it a little, even the humble 3Dmark 2001 made it crash after a few seconds.... nothing that 1.7V couldn't solve.

The few 2500+'s I've played with haven't been able to hit 2.2GHz and pass Prime95 for many hours without using a voltage higher than 1.8V.

So my answer is probably, but passing something like Prime95, I don't think it is as sure as people claim.

So has ANYONE here ran prime95 for at least 24hrs on stock voltage running a 2500+ at 11x200 stable?

i knew i needed to bump my voltage after lame encoder wouldn't run past 10 minutes. Was trying to encode a MOVIE. bumped it and ran prime and was set.

it sucks .. i can't even go past 2.2ghz. not a .5 multiplier past and not 5 or 10 FSB more.

My XP2500+ needs 1.175V to hit 2.1GHz and 1.825V to hit 2.2GHz.

Won't hit higher than 2.2GHz even with 1.9V + voltage.

That's Prime95 stable of course :)

BTW, I also have a A7N8X-DX and am reporting actual voltage. In the BIOS, my actual voltage will be 0.05V higher than what is selected.

Whats the default voltage of a 2500+ CPU, since in the bios it just says default.
Then the safest max temp you think is ok to go?

Reason being I have a 2500, on a Soltek board. I was able to get it stable at 11X200FSB for months by raising the ram volts. But now 1 out of 15 times when booting up the H/D stays lite and wont boot up. So after restarting it comes up ok. So was just wondering if I raised the CPU voltage it may help resolve this issue. I would raise ram voltage but I think im close to maxed as it is.

2500 @ 2.2 is about as common as....... i dunno,.... its common

Mine was about as easy as it gets, stable too
