I've got a scratch on my venerable 2001FP and was looking to get something bigger.

Are Dell monitors still some of the best bang for the buck?

Do you game a lot? I believe almost every dell 08' model has noticeable input lag

Are there any widescreen, newer monitors that use a comparable panel?

I don't think so but that depends on what you like about the 2001FP. It's an IPS and has unique characteristics you may or may not need.

The only current 'worthwhile' upgrades are of the same technology but newer , faster and bigger (and of course more expensive) One is a Dell!

Best to good

NEC's WUXi models -$1000-$1200

Dell 3007WFP-HC -$1200

Planar PX2611W -$800

Edit: forgot about the HP 2475w $600 that's #4

Don't let sticker shock scare you - we don't buy LCD's every 6 months like video cards. If I have to a pay lot to get a perfect LCD that will last me 3-5 years, so be it.

is the HP 2475w available in the US yet? I cant seem to find it at any of the HP resellers

I'm thinking of getting a 24" for some 3d CG work, and it's down to the spva Dell 2408wfp or the ips HP 2475w. The only thing available is the LP2465

Good gravy, I only paid $700 for the Dell about 5 years ago.

I can get a 46" 1080P LCD TV for $1200. ;)

You get what you pay for, generally with displays. Our plasma was $3400 (pioneer Kuro pro) and I wouldn't trade it for all top 5 50" LCDs

I got lucky with my 2408WFP.

I bought it about a week or two after the new revision (A01) came out, which was supposed to address input lag problems, as well as give better adjustments for sharpness. "Unfortunately" I still received the original A00 revision, but my monitor doesn't seem to have the problems most people described. The input lag is completely unnoticeable (I haven't put it next to a CRT, but it isn't affecting me in FPS games or making me dizzy like so many people said), the OSD settings stay with what I set them at between power on / power off, and I used a program called softMCCS to manually set the sharpness to 37 (the A00 only goes in steps of 25; 25 is too blurry, 50 is too sharp, 37 is perfect - the A01 has sharpness in steps of 10).

I can't say for sure that I'd buy a second one (assuming I had that kind of cash, and if I actually liked dual monitors), because I'm not sure whether or not people were blowing the problems out of proportion, or if I truly got lucky and received a gem. I believe it uses the same (or similar) panel as the Samsung 245T.
