2405WFP + 7800GT? How is it (those of you that have this combo)

I'm thinking of getting the EVGA 7800GT 517 with the copper heatsink and OCing it to GTX speeds. What do you guys think of this idea? Will the step up from a x800xt be much?

It will be a good improvement over the x800xt, (Doom 3 at 1600 x 1200 4xAA goes from 37 fps to 47 fps) but you are running at your full 1920 x 1200? In that case, if you like to max out quality settings, and use 4xAA, a GT even a GTX won't easily handle newer games. Doom is actually quite old, and for games like COD2 and FEAR (GT and GTX at 1600 x 1200 4xAA/8xAF got 23 and 26, which is unplayable) you will just have to sacrifice quality. I can just barely run FEAR at 1280 x 1024 without any AA on my X850XT. I wouldn't recommend a 24" with less than SLI or a brand new ultra-performer.

I went from an x800xt pe to a x1800xt (oc'd to PE speeds). The x800xt pe did not cut it for newer games at 1920x1200. The x1800xt does great though.

A 7800GT will not be enough if you play games like BF2, Source Based and other newer games at 1920x1200. I'd seriously consider a new x1900xt/x or a used x1800xt or wait for nvidia to introduce their new line up in the next month or two.

Ditto. My 7800GTX@525/1350 got pummeled trying to play games at native res (1920x1200) with only 2AA, let alone max eye candy. A 7800GT would only be worse although it would be a nice step up from your X800XT in SOME games. FarCry and HL2 will probably run the same or slower than they would with your current card. At least, that was my experience comparing my X850XT PE to my BFG 7800GTX.

What they said. A single 7800GT will not be sufficient to run the latest games at 1920x1200 unless you back down the quality settings in a serious way.

My X800Pro runs all games nicely on my 2405 except for FEAR. That should maybe give you an idea.

Doom 3, Far Cry, and HL2 are all very playable at 1920x1200, albeit with little or no AA. HL2 works fine with 2XAA, but I prefer Far Cry without it enabled due to the frame rate hit. That's with all settings to maxium, I might add (although Doom 3 is on "high", not "ultra" for obvious reasons).

My guess is that the 7800GT would run most games at 1920x1200 with 2XAA so long as you're not overly fussy (read: 60fps constantly). FEAR is a total writeoff and I suggest against buying hardware just for that game. Its graphics do not justify the hardware it craves.

Oh, one more thing to add: COD2 doesn't run well.

The point is that FEAR and COD2 and Lost Coast are titles that embody elements of the new game standards, and all of the best quality games (Oblivion, STALKER, Alan Wake, etc.) will almost definately require the same or better hardware to run. When Doom3 came out, people bought 6800s, but not only because of Doom3 itself, but because they new that titles after that would only get more demanding.

I stepped up from an x800xl to a 7800gt and hasn't looked back since.
Combo 2405fpw + 7800gt = a very happy marriage to say the least. Played all my games at native res 1920x1200 with decent frame rate. Go for the win, 7800gt!

I'm getting my 2405 tomorrow and have a 7800GT. I'm holding off on going SLI until the next gen reveals its stuff and will prolly borderbox at lower rezs for demanding games.
