I agree, I tend to have better score when I play BF2 on my laptop with a M9700 @ 1024x768 low because all the eye candy (especially shadows and the sharpness of high res) would give me a harder time to see the enemy.

I am, we are talking in game res... like doom3 max res is 1600x1200...
ah good I guess than I will have to "downgrade" to stay playable since gaming on 1600x1200 is alot of adjusting.

You can change the res to whatever you need with a little editing.

For the serious gamers, fps multiplayers are easier at a low resolution, with no eye candy turned on.

When i went from my 1280x1024 LCD to my 1600x1200 LCD, my aim went to the dump for the first while in UT2k4, which is especially frustrating in 1 v 1s.

I love to play with all settings maxed though, so i sacrifice aim & precision for eye candy

hans, start playing your games on a 15inch crt monitor max res of 800x600 for a year.
than jump from thaat to a top end gfx card, 24 inch monitor, 1600x1200... HUGE difference!

I play all my games at the native resolution: 1920x1200. THAT is the resolution that this monitor displays the best at.

Playing at low resolutions of 800x600 or 1024 or heck even 1280x1024 now - is just silly because I can play at 60FPS at 1920x1200. It is very smooth, and the thing is: I can see much much better at high resolutions than at low ones. What looks like a couple pixels in some bushes far away, is rendered as some bad-guy's helmet at 1920x1200... I am always popping people first and getting the first shot from long distances- and I'm pretty sure it's because they can't see me nearly as clearly as I see them.

Yeah, try upping the mouse sensitivity.

hmm, i know some players pro players play at low res, the only thing I can think of is that refreh rates are insane at 800x and 1024x so they can enjoy a CRT with 140fps v-synced.

and please dont start a 'but 60FPS is fine no one needs more' discussion.. 100fps is sweet but 120 and 140hz locked is like butter. more FPS really does help their game, every extra frame is an extra degree of responsiveness to them.

I used to play UT competitively some years ago and I used 640x480 (Voodoo3 3k) and later 800x600 (Geforce3) with several details turned down, but that was about the limit for cards around those times to give 100fps or so minimums. I would have probably used a higher resolution if the video card / monitor could handle it well.

yea, competitive gamers play at 800x600...but isn't that only to get the maximum amount of fps? I never knew that higher resolutions can affect your gaming...just thought you had to get used to

That's what I think as well; all the competitive gamers that I've seen play at lowest settings possible and 800x600 to get the highest FPS.

I dont think so, because even though now computers can play CS 1.6 1600x1200 @1023019281302 fps, I think the pros still play at 800x600

I think they do that just because they are used to it. I mean, they've been playing CS for years. I'm sure some of them don't upgrade twice a year like we do, so some of them ought to be sporting some older hardware as well. Mainly, though, I just think it's what they're used to.

v-synced is not necessary on CRTs.

Nooby gamers: No matter how good of a computer you have or you have the best god damn Logitech Mouse, you still are going to be crap !!! . To become a good Killer in any FPS you 1st need to study the map. Take note of weapon recoil, distance/time to this and that place , what you can and can't do. Read up on people finding and become very smart. Don't run in like into a open area like a fool and start to shoot anyone you see because you probably just get pawned. Anyways a good gamer has really good eye and can easily notice even the slightest thing. Think !!! don?t just shoot like

It would be interesting to see how this *good* player perform with a Radeon 9200SE @ 1600x1200 All Settings High.

It took me about 1-2 weeks to adjust from 17" crt to a 22" crt

I had to up my sensitivity and yet I still felt "slow" and I couldn't get my aim quite right.

Just open your shortcut properties and add this to the end of "target": +szx 1920 +szy 1200

is it really that HARD to play at high resolutions? Or is it just something you have to get used to? Your scaring me cuz i'm planning on getting a 2005FPW, lol...

I find the 2005fpw to be 'just right'. The 2405fpw is HUGE - the 4" makes a big difference (I've seen the two side by side), and remeber 24" vs 20" is a very large difference in terms or total area.

I completely agree with you. I use the 2005 and for a long time I've been considering swapping it out for the 2405.. but I have ultra sensitive ears and the humming they emit would drive me insane.
But the screen is just too high res for me, also you are looking at keeping a 7800GTX "class" card every gen to game at native res.

I wont ever get the 2405 now, nor will I get a bigger screen than a 20" (unless someday I run my PC thru a large LCD TV in the living room). For a desk, this is just right.
The graphics card requirements are alot better too at its native res as a bonus. :)

works for all games?

There are widescreen gaming forums around the internet, and easy hacks like this to make most every game work in various resolutions. Google is your friend :). It took me about 1 minute to find out how to make BF2 work in 1920x1200, and the next game I get into- I'll do the same thing..
