So you would pay double the price to buy one locally with lots of miles on it????

In reality, not very dumb. Total trip cost: $168

Don't forget to figure the cost of 2200 miles on your minvan (whatever). There are tons of car (and motorbike, I suppose) shipping companies out there, you know. I remember a pal had his car shipped from FL to college in upstate NY. I think it cost something like $350? (but this was years ago, late 90s)

There's no way I could make a trip like that, so I must give you props for the endurance, if not wisdom. 😀

I've done that distance (one way) with a fellow driver, but never alone. After 12 hours driving alone I just wouldn't do it anymore.

I think you forgot to include the extra oil change, wear on the tires and engine, dings from flying objects, car wash, and loss of car valuation due to mileage.

$168 plus a severe risk to yourself, your dog, & any unfortunate soul who happened to be around you when you hit your limit.

Glad to hear it worked out, but it's not particularly bright. At minimum take someone with you next time. With two people it's not too bad, I drove cross country (Oregon to PA) in three days (2 x 30 hour sessions + an 8 hour break in the middle) with my brother, it worked out fine but neither of us ever drove for more than 4-5 hours straight.

What you don't realize is that I know my limits and I know the signs. There have been trips that I got tired in only 11 hours and stopped. I had actually fully planned on getting a room somewhere but was wide awake. My eyes did not sting and I did not even yawn until the last hour or so. One can prep themselves for a long trip and know what to do to help from getting tired....most do not.

Sounds like he's had experience though...and enjoys it. That helps when you get to your "limit"

Also, Sundog, ever think about being a truck driver? 😀

Sorry, but you gave me a good laugh.

Extra oil change: Nope, Amsoil, once per year change unless I exceed 25K miles. Let's not het into this argument, I have oil analysis' done that disprove needing oil changes.

Loss of car valuation: Now that is a classic. I OWN A CHEVY VENTURE...it lost 68% of it's purchase price in 3 years without me doing anything else other owning it.

Tires: Just put 80K tires on it this summer. This van will be DEAD before these tires need replacing.

How many miles total was that? We did South Bend, IN to LA in 36 hours straight. I drove 14 hours straight before trading drivers.

I know. 😀

I used to routinely drive my Honda Goldwing on long trip. You know the funny thing. On this trip around 4pm Sat I was getting a little tired and was thinking about pulling over and getting a room. Decided on a town about 120 miles away...once it became dark I got completely re-energized. At 6😛m I gassed up and took the dog for a 1/2 run.

Hope they didn't move you to a split shift or a roving shift....they bite.

I agree that oil changes are over done, I didn't know if you were the type that overdoes them or not.

I don't know the details of your particular vehicle (mileage, options, age, etc) but I just did a quick NADAguides.com comparison and with the typical Chevy Venture, 2200 miles reduces the valuation by $325. Of course if you use it until you put it into a junk yard, this doesn't matter as much. But it does mean it is 2200 miles sooner that you'll have to put up the money for another vehicle. So you'll pay for it sometime.

You still didn't mention things like wear and tear on belts, etc. You may very well have to replace something at some point.

Only fellow riders understand why the drive was to get a bike. I would have done the same. I have a guy potentially coming here (Wisconsin) from Atlanta to get my bike. He's planning on flying here and riding it back - in November. Crazy.

On first this week. Thirds next week. Includes one double.

I just did 1200 miles from Seattle to LA in less than 16 hours. (no sleep only stop for gas) It's possible but I wouldn't do it again. Not for 1200 miles, certainly not for 2200 miles.

LOL......let me put it this way. I enjoy driving. What I own I use. If I were to buy a 68 Corvette Fastback it would not sit in my garage. It would be my daily driver. Why, because I buy something to enjoy it. I am not going to worry about devaluation.

I drive because I enjoy it. Having lived all over the U.S. I feel very fortunate having been in every state (except Alaska). I know people who never go anywhere. "It's too far, I don't have time, what am I going to do there, I am too busy" and the list goes on and on.

I take very good care of my vehicles, and bought them to use them.....vehicles can be replaced....memories can not. Each time I go someplace whether it be new or not I see something new or experience something new.

2500 or so, not real sure. We made fairly slow progress, loaded truck + we ran into some trouble in Washington & spent about 6 hours going nowhere while we tore a carb apart.

Heh...the guy I bought this from in the last 3 months has had people from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and other very southern states drive to Maryland to pick up dirtbikes and street bikes. Buys and sells them on a regular basis.

My dad is exactly the same way. Here is a typical 2 week family vacation I had to suffer through every summer (and yes we did all of this on one trip):
[*]Start in Nebraska. Want to visit grandparents in Florida.
[*]Niagra falls is somewhat on the way (it is to the east of Nebraska), lets stop there.
[*]Kids haven't been to the statue of liberty yet. Lets drive by it and look at it in the distance (no time to stop).
[*]The Lincoln memorial is a pleasant break from driving, lets see it.
[*]Get to Florida and stay for 2 days visiting grandparents.
[*]Key West is only 5 more hours driving. Why not have a look at those bridges and not really do anything there.
[*]Kids haven't done anything fun yet, lets stop at World's of Fun in Kansas City.
[*]Back home to Nebraska.
No offense, but I know your feeling, and I detest it.

My question is this: if it is true what you say, why are you here typing on a computer and not out having a car adventure?

That's some odd logic. Who says that because you love something means that you have to do that something 24/7?

Sundog has been home ~36 hours. I think that is enough time doing other things. 😉

Heck there is a new bike there begging to be ridden. Why isn't Sundog out riding?

ROFL.....I can do very long road trips and can condition myself for them. But in order to do the long ones I can not do it one after another. That would not work for me. I can concentrate on one long road trip, but really do need some time to recover. I normally do one trip every couple of months. Get this, if I do not have anywhere to go....I will pick a place to go to (Wyoming, Canada, Kansas City (for a steak) that is about 8-10 hours away. Will drive there and then back....just to do it. The trip just needs to be between 16-24 hours. NORMALLY 24 hours is my limit and I can tell. This last trip was odd as i never got really tired. I had $$ for a hotel, and I also had blankets and a sleepingbag to sleep in the van if I needed.

Work can be stressful so it is a small getaway from EVERYBODY. The van has a range of >600 miles (unless it is below freezing= -3 to 4 mpg) so I can truley get away from everyone. For me a road trip is a mini-vacation.

Why am I not out riding the bike? Because it is a trail bike, not a MX bike. I am not familiar enough with the bike yet (and my neighbor doesn't have his here yet). I am also unfamiliar with the trails here and do not wish to get lost. I also wish to spend time with my lovely family that allows me to endulge in road trips now and then.😉

Heh.....my favorite summer was one where my mom packed us up and we traveled the U.S for the entire summer looking for ghost towns along the way. Was awesome!!!!!!! Was on the road for almost 3 months and camped almost every night. Minnesota had the biggest damn mosquitos....errr....why do I live here again? 😕

Now look at the picks of my bike and think what it will look like dual-sported with a license plate (legal for on-road use also). I think I can get to some ghost towns that are no longer on maps but we know about and where they are having done research on them many years ago (and having talked to some very, very old folks in the late 70s who's relatives used to live in these places and had picks of the areas).
