21" Flatscreen CRT or 17" LCD?

My LCD looks better than any CRT i've ever had.

I guess it would depend if it's a flat screen CRT or not. I'll never use a curved screen CRT again.

still like a good CRT......if I was going to a LCD I would have to spend lots to get the quality, the cheap LCD are just nasty looking.

Thanks for all the replies!

I think I'm going to go with the CRT mainly because I'd use this monitor for gaming and for TV/DVD watching and I can get much better results from a large CRT.

I use the same exact monitor at work and it's a great monitor. I run it at 1600x1200@85Hz and it looks really nice.

Trying to watch a movie that's fairly dark on a 17" LCD from my bed on the other side of the room becomes really difficult. I think a 21" CRT will be a world of difference, especially since the LCD I have isn't exactly top of the line.

CRT

I have an older Sony 21" and it get's peoples attention. It's big and bright. It has a lot of desktop space. For gaming and watching tv, definitley the 21".

i wouldn't settle for an lcd unless it was 19" or bigger.

Plus hey, the 21" keeps my warm nice and warm 🙂

I personally think you should go with the LCD, the CRT is bigger which is nice...but I just think the picture looks better on a good LCD. Not to mention its less of a strain on your eyes.

How about that new Dell 20" LCD AnandTech reported on? Has 16ms refresh, so it's good for gaming, but runs very hot for an LCD (almost as bad as a CRT, according to Anand).

Samsung has a 12ms LCD coming out soon, too.

I don't think I'll ever go back to CRTs, to be honest. LCDs are just too sexah!

I would go with the 21" CRT. Ya LCD screens are smaller and more hip, but the visual quality of the CRT tube is still better that most LCDs. Just my 2 cents

i wont go back to crt either but the 16ms 20 inch dell is just waaay to expensive. i picked up a 19 inch envision lcd with 25ms for $400, yes its an inch smaller and the response time isnt as good but considering i paid half as much as the dell, i think its a better value

21" CRT all the way. It'll be bigger, have better colours, will work at any resolution it supports, have higher refresh rates (which is important for framerate based games) and it'll probably be cheaper too.

LCD simply because CRTs hurt my eyes after long periods of time.

Run a higher refresh rate. At 120Hz, I could stare at a screen for hours on end without any problems. 75Hz or lower, and I get eyestrain quickly - 60Hz can give me a headache in around 5 minutes.

I used to run at around 100 on my old computer and it definitely hurt my eyes after about half an hour of use. I've never used a 21" monitor, but I'm quite happy with my 17" NEC 1760V. I can see why he'd want the larger one if he uses it for a TV - I have a 27" flat tube sony for that.

if 100hz hurts your eyes there is something wrong with your eyes. see a doctor

LCD for my vote if you're going to be reading a lot of text. But if you want to both game and text, get an 18" LCD, best of both worlds.

Is the CRT a flat screen? Curved screens are such a waste of time, don't even bother if it is.

Your eyes can't detect anything past 75hz. Anything past this is redundent.

higher refresh rate, with mine at 100hz its doesn't bother me at all, 60hz gives me a headache in like 30minutes

Ive wanted to get a 20 inch LCD for a long while but the Iiyama HM204DT 22" CRT really has me impressed. Is is constructed really compact and very professional specs. These refresh rates are killer.

I run at 100hz too, and i don't get headaches as i do with 60hz (which some of my work computers are set to default)... but i certainly can't work on a CRT even at 100hz as i can with an LCD. My eyes just get tired, whereas with the LCD, i have no problem sitting infront of this for hours on hours.

Somebody mentioned an 1800FP, and i would agree, get this. I'm using one at the moment, and i can never go back to a CRT for text, and even with gaming, i usually play on this nowadays (even though i paid over $2500 USD for a Sony GDM-FW900 24").

If your going to be reading lots of text then a LCD would be much better. This is my first year in university I can't stand reading from my CRT. I have to read off the laptop. I find I can go many hours, like 6 or 7 w/o my eyes hurting whereas with 30mins on the CRT my eye's just go. The CRT is a 19' NEC fe950+ and the lcd is off the x1000 lappy. The laptop lcd even plays games very well like NFSU and CS but I don't know the specs on the lcd 🙁. It's better than the 15' samsung lcd we have though.
