Ever see the GM EV1 burnout footage? The probably 1998 EV that General Motors came out with could lay rubber down the street like crazy. The battery tech just wasn't there for that kind of driving....and maybe isn't today.
If I buy an EV in the next 5 years, it's going to be a golf cart.
My buddy's dad actually had one of those! It was a fantastically cool car at the time! FP&L had a special program for it back in the day: (paywall warning)
Officials of Florida Power and Light Co. have a lot of convincing to do. They must show how an electric vehicle that may go up to 100 miles on a charge can fit into everyday life.Brian Hanrahan, program manager for electric-vehicle charging, admits the technology has not won any popularity contests…

This was the late 90's...I was in high school & we had like an '89 Grand Marquis, so an electric car that
also looked really cool (from the front, at least! lol) was pretty dang novel at the time! Our family car was a BOAT compared to it (213.5" long lol). Google says the Mercury had a 150hp V-8 with 270 lb⋅ft of torque & was RWD. Man, this brings back memories...I remember having to spin the steering wheel like the Wheel of Fortune to take turns lol. It had the mafia "eight-body trunk" haha. My current whip is an '18 4-cylinder Ecoboost Mustang, which in comparison is a 310hp turbo with 350 lb-ft of torque, plus there's like a foot of empty space on either side of the engine because it's not the V-8 Coyote engine lol. The efficiency of engines today are AMAZING!
I recently test-drove both the 4-cylinder & 6-cylinder new Broncos and they're both hilariously powerful. Anyone complaining about the lack of a V-8, particularly in the larger, heavier 4-door Bronco, simply hasn't driven one with the modern engines. The 2.7L V-6 is a twin-turbo with something like 310HP or 315HP & 400 lb-ft torque. Like, it HAULS! Same deal with the Mach-E electric Mustang...even the non-GT is stupid fast! It's amazing how far cars have come in just 20 years, to the point where you can hop online & order a 0-60 in 1.99s Tesla for like $140k or whatever. Makes me wonder what the physical limit is for street-legal cars!
