actually an old steel mill...it just looks like a nuke plant...

That type/shape of concrete industrial cooling-tower is used in many different heat-producing applications however they will be forever associated in peoples minds with the Three-Mile Island disaster.

Really is hard to believe this is real.... if so China is a freaking joke.

It's cultural exchange and enlightenment. It actually represents one of us Chinese's tendencies quite well. ;)
We are a pragmatic bunch, super thrifty, hating spending money bunch. When these Olympics are done, that land will still be operating and not go into pure waste like the Olympic village did in the Greece.

My mom never guys food unless it's on sale. Been working the church free food gimmies for over 25 years. Has a preference for hatchbacks or station wagons.
My dad was raised in the states and he also had a Civic wagon.

This sort of thing makes a mockery of that "glorious" opening ceremony.

Being cheap/frugal is one thing but that ski-jump location is disgusting and China should be ashamed and embarrassed.

they dq'd the Canadian that came in second (14), they watched the replays for a minute or 2 but didn't catch that the hand was from the Chinese lady :) ah well that's short track

this was the reason

Tell us you're an idiot without telling us you're an idiot.
It's a world class venue with an interesting backdrop, and competitors have praised the quality of the construction. It's no coincidence that the women's big-air ski final brought out the very best of the athletes. They were throwing down tricks they've never done before in competition.

This has nothing to do with being cheap; they are redeveloping much of the site.

Seemed like the Koreans got jobbed in both semifinals of the men's 1000m, and the final was crazy as well.

I really haven't been watchin...is this real?? LOL

so this is real...but those structures in the back are not nuclear plant cooling towers...it is is an old steel mill....

I was looking at those and wondering. They said it used to be a steel mill there and I wondered if those stacks were from that, they didn't refer to them specifically. It did make me think of a nuclear facility but figured no way.

Beijing will always be a second class city compared to Shanghai. Always.
.
Shanghai: Population: 26.32 million (2019)

Jul 8, 2020 — With 27 million people living in its urban area, Shanghai is the largest city in China, and the largest city in the world

Well, you can say they were frugal about money and stuck to the "reuse" part of using resources. Despite me hating the regime, I can safely say we Chinese value saving money over fashionability if push comes to shove. If even an $2 extra is spent, it is like inviting death to one's door.

Yep, I was looking it up myself and it is apparently a former steel mill operating as a museum. Maybe the raw materials for Harbor Freight Tools back before 2008 can trace their origin to there.

And besides, it is a country for the proletariat/peasant farmers. /sarcasm
I went to a presentation some years ago that was led by an Asian and he happened to mention "Asian frugality." I came up to him during a break and explained to him that I had some major chops in the frugality arena myself (this was in the presentation auditorium at a major hotel near the San Francisco airport and concerned training in investments). I said I could probably give those Asians some tips, and he smiled.

I mean...it's kind of interesting.

I like that this part of the world is still going on with serious sports competition when they have a roaming Super Mutant and Brotherhood of Steel problem that has clearly been going on for decades.

men's snowboard BigAir halfpike event:
in the preliminary round, there was a snowboarder who basically qualified in his 1st run and decided to do artistic (no twists or rotations) instead of technical for his 2nd run for fun.

What was his name?
i want to re-watch that

edit:
maybe it was his 1st run?
google says china's Gao Hongbo did no twists or rotations and skipped his 2nd run.
link to video?

edit2:
link to complete halfpike prelims video https://streamable.com/hlbngl
gao hongbo is at 18:00.
he was injured the previous day during practice thus why no tricks.

edit 3:
Found him!
Andre Hoeflich with a score of 75 in his 1st run.
He just did lots of air with cool poses and he didnt even do a 5th trick.

I did watch some coverage last night and I think that big air freestyle skiing is my new favorite event (it is done by the fake nuclear factory from earlier LOL)....those dudes were doing some crazy shit...

Pretty clever of China to class up the concrete towers though by putting the olympic rings on them for the TV coverage LOL

japanese female in mixed team ski jumping DQ'd for her ski suit being 2cm too wide at the thighs, thus her team was out of the running for a metal.
(They finished 4th after her DQ)

Five athletes disqualified from mixed team ski jumping event over suits

also, 4 other females from other countries were DQ'd for having too wide suits.

WTF?
how does a 2cm (~3/4 inch) wider ski suit affect anything?!

Russia's superstar tested positive for a banned substance two months ago.

Seems like a way for the Russian team to finish her career and wash their hands of her completely.

I was on Youtube reading comments and one commenter mentioned that the coaches only care about the medals and that there are skaters waiting in the wings to take her place.

Are you stupid? No, you don't have to answer that. :p

For one, the figure skating commentators have been raving that Valiyeva is the greatest female skater they've ever seen. This is hyperbole since she's a 15 year old, but it's partly true because over time, technical difficulty rises. Valiyeva's quad jumps will trump prior Olympic champions' skills to even casual observers. But that isn't how sports figures are usually declared the "greatest ever."

More to the point, why would ROC bring her to the Olympics to compete, at the risk of disqualification for not only herself but her team in the already completed team event? If they wanted to cut her loose, they could have done it weeks ago. Details are scant right now, but it seems like the ISU must have buried the failed test after it happened. The Russians are saying it's not a PED, so "no harm, no foul" LOL. This might be true for countries without state-sponsored doping, but I don't see why Russia should ever get a pass when they're already on probation.

I don't know what the outcome will be, but Russia is the last country that should be allowed to break rules with impunity. I don't say that for any political reasons, but because of the mass doping campaign they ran in Sochi.
