Dear Future Hurricanes,
For the love of all that is Holy, please steer clear of the Outer Banks during the last week of September and first week of October. I’m begging you.

Thank you.

The ocean is hot as balls and the higher-than-average season we are already experiencing is expected to continue and intensify.

Louisiana is still rebuilding and cleaning up after being devastated by Laura/Delta from last year, so another major hurricane making landfall in LA would be really bad.

The NHC doesn't usually start talking about potential impacts this early in the game.

Local social media is saying the run on the grocery stores has commenced. (SE TX).

I'm hoping our investment in a whole home generator will push any potential hurricane away

The latest thing that's really causing the damage. The last few hurricanes and tropical storms (but not this year) are like obnoxious house guests who won't leave. They just hang around and dump 10s of inches of rain.

Looks like the bulk of the Gulf is 30C or above. So it’s warm enough to power up a storm. It could also be worse.

1. A broad area of low pressure is expected to form over the
southwestern Caribbean Sea during the next day or so from a tropical
wave currently located north of Colombia. Environmental conditions
are forecast to be conducive for development, and a tropical
depression or tropical storm is likely to form late this week or
over the weekend. The system is expected to move northwestward over
the northwestern Caribbean Sea and near or across the Yucatan
Peninsula of Mexico on Friday and into the Gulf of Mexico this
weekend where conditions are expected to be favorable for additional
development. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall and flooding
will be possible through the weekend in portions of Nicaragua,
Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, and the Yucatan Peninsula. In addition,
this system could bring dangerous impacts from storm surge, wind,
and heavy rainfall to portions of the coasts of Louisiana, Texas,
and the Mexican state of Tamaulipas late this weekend and early next
week. However, uncertainty remains large since the system has yet to
form.
Interests in these areas should closely monitor the progress
of this system and ensure they have their hurricane plan in place.
An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to
investigate the system Thursday afternoon, if necessary.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...50 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...80 percent.

Don't count yer chikkinz before the eggs have been laid.

I've been in Florida almost my whole life, and sitting through a big storm for many hours (the last big one, name escapes me, covered the whole state in hurricane winds all night) is NOT fun. Losing power for multiple days was also not fun.

It's one reason I'm moving. Not that anyplace is going to be all that good to be in as weather patterns continue to go haywire in the years ahead.

It worked for me in FL from 2005-2015 then Matthew cane along, be sure to have PLENTY of gas, a genny that's keeping a fridge going and running a window unit AC will consume a lot of gasoline. I've seen plenty of people plunk down $450-700 for a genny and only buy one 5 gallon Jerry jug, it will be gone in less than a day unless your super conservative on how you run it.

Hot as hell in the Midwest. It is hell.
I predicted this but just wait until the next Summer when it reaches into 110+ and higher for long periods of time. You think THEN the deniers will wonder about the impact of climate change? 110 might be fine for Las Vegas or Phoenix, but not the norm for the Midwest. And not to mention the upper western portion of the country.

I guess the way to address climate change is to reduce fossil fuels and the likes, but that is where the jobs come into play and we all know that republicans rather burn down the earth before switching from fossil fuels to clean safe energy. Short term, fossil fuels created jobs or at least work was to be had in the industry, but switching to clean energies will take long term retraining and new thinking. Republicans always think in the short term and definitely Donald Trump lives in the short term. They don't care if the cities flood away or the forests burn away or the icecaps melt or the farmlands wither away.

Most lightning in any place I've ever lived, and I grew up in DC suburbs which is no stranger to thunder storms. One time I started out to go to the Publix which was maybe a mile down the road. I started out and thought a tornado was coming down the road. I flipped a U and by the time I got back to my apartment, the sun was out, and it was clearing.

Higher than average Hurricane season, has anything worth noting actually occurred so far this year?

“The season had the most active June on record, tying 1886, 1909, 1936, and 1968 with three named storms forming.[3] Then, on July 1, Hurricane Elsa formed, surpassing 2020's Tropical Storm Edouard as the earliest-forming fifth named storm on record by five days.[4] Three named storms formed in August, including the season's first major hurricane, Grace, which moved through the Caribbean, passed over the Yucatan, and then rapidly intensified in the Bay of Campeche to a Category 3 hurricane before making landfall in Mexico.”

I had 10 5 gallon cans for my old portable. The new whole home generator is natural gas powered, provides power in 10 seconds and can run the whole house including the AC. If the storm is bad enough to lose power and gas we’ll leave or more likely have left before the storm.

Also have 5 pallets of water and a 2.5 gallon water filter/purifier for when we lose water.

Have to treat TX like a 3rd world country theses days.

^^^ Keep in mind that bottled water doesn't stay good forever. You're better off drawing your own from your tap a few days or hours ahead of a storm. Save milk jugs or juice/pop bottles instead of trashing them.

Always wanted one of those, but in addition to the purchace price I'd have to pay to have a NG line brought up to the house since everything else in it is currently electric. Defiantly the way to go though, NG is all underground so little chance a storm will affect it and having central AC in TX or FL heat is a godsend in these months.

The bottle water gets cycled through every couple of months.

We made our bed, now we get to live in it. Can’t really complain that the consequences of our poor stewardship are increasingly obvious.

We’d been going back and forth on getting one for years. It was the 3 day power outage during the winter that finally pushed us over.

I heard that the National Weather Service developed a vaccine for hurricanes but Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida prefer their freedoms.

99L likely to become tropical storm Ida at some point today. The NHC upgraded chance of development to 90%. Still a long ways out though.

"Tropical Storm Warnings could be required later this morning for the Cayman Islands and western Cuba. Heavy rainfall and flooding possible across portions of Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, and the Yucatan Peninsula today through Friday.

Dangerous impacts from storm surge, wind, and heavy rainfall are possible Sunday and Monday along portions of the northern Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle to the upper Texas coast, with the greatest risk along the coast of Louisiana.

While uncertainty in the details of these impacts remains large, interests in these areas should closely monitor the progress of this system and ensure they have their hurricane plan in place. "
