Jay Leno almost looks like he's driving it with eyes closed. :p

But yeah, it's a nice looking Mustang.

Nice expensive toy, but a bit much. Wonder how much driving skill Leno has, and if he drives it on the track.

Base model's only $70k, I say only like that's not a lot lol. But, as Leno said this is bordering on super car territory. So I guess it's costing a lot is all relative. They're only making 5,000 of these, and I don't see the value plummeting after 5 years like a Camaro or Vette. So my chances of owning one ever - slim to none.

Well, I am looking at it in the context of his "garage". So many expensive cars that are just sitting there. Does he really need another?
And like I said, will he really drive it, and if he does, is he skilled enough to make use of its capabilities?

Leno has never proclaimed himself to be a great driver, quite the opposite. who cares. he has maybe the most unique collection on earth and builds some amazing stuff, Hopefully preserving some interesting history for a long time.

should one have to take a test to qualify to buy a mustang now? HP may be super-car territory, but is handling? i doubt it. Its still a mustang.

Being featured on Jay Leno's garage != He bought the car

Particularly when the car is accompanied by someone from the manufacturer and the episode is released on embargo day.

Also, who cares? Virtually all of us who enjoy performance cars are never going to be race car drivers. I just want to have fun on my way to work.

read through a review article a couple of days ago and the price of the configured sample was just north of $90,000. you get quite a bit for that, though, such as a car that is an absolute savage on the track and strip but can actually be a decent DD too--minus the fuel cost.

i forget where i read it but to quote the article it basically summed it up as "America stuffed into one car."

[EDIT]: found it on MotorTrend

I think the car is cool in its way, but I certainly hope America is more than owning a car which uses a lot of gas, has more power than can ever be used in normal driving, and costs 4 or 5 times what a mainstream sedan or SUV costs. That is why I dont really read car magazines that much anymore, seems like they are only interested in super-expensive performance cars.

Oh you wont ever see me driving one, as I share the sort of same philosophy with sensibility... not to mention I couldn't afford it. I think the article was referencing how a U.S. automaker could offer something that wasn't just a gas-guzzling brute in a straight line but could also be a weekend driver and track day toy. In other words, this car is everything the Challenger or Camaro is not.

There will always be those who blow a ton of money on overpowered cars that suck down gas like a semi hauling concrete blocks but it's worth something to be able to say that it is capable (not necessarily good at) of more than ripping burnouts between sets of traffic lights.

When's the last time you shopped for a new car, 1997?

It's double the average transaction price, not 4-5x anything on the market unless you compare the cheapest cars sold to the most expensive GT500 you can option (ADM excluded of course).

It's a ridiculous amount of performance for $70-100k.

Actually, I just bought a new car less than a year ago. Paid slightly over 20K. People may pay for a lot of extras, but one can easily get a compact/midsize sedan for around 25k. So that is about 1/4 of the price of a loaded 100k Shelby. Also, they will pay less sales tax, license fees, and insurance costs. I agree, that car is a lot of performance for the money, but it is overkill.

Edit: Yea, I admit I am getting old. At one time I would have thought that car was amazing (actually it is), but not something I would be interested in buying anymore. Would rather save the money and get a basic sedan/compact SUV, or if spending 40k or more, get something like an Audi A4. Of course, I live in a snowy climate where 5 months of the year, that car would be the worst possible vehicle. Might feel different if I lived in California or something.

@ondma Don't blame it on age. Us old guys like fast and powerful cars too. Us normal folk just won't have the money to buy those super expensive cars but who cares? I know I can spend much less for a quality car that gets me where I need to go and in style too. I love Jay's passion for the automobile. He loves cars and he has the money to add to his collection anytime he wants. Good for him. He saves so much history its nuts. And he is a genuine nice guy.

IDK. Some reviewers were comparing it to a 911 GT2 with the way it delivers power and handles, and saying it would most likely be cross-shopped with that rather than a Camaro or Challenger. But I guess the question would then be do you consider a 911 GT2 a super car or just a sports car?

I would not consider a GT2 to be a super car. Really nothing in the 911 line is. 918 or Carrera GT sure. But not 911.

What happened to the old days where someone bought a car and kept it for 20 or 30 years? There are a lot of 911 owners who used their Porsche as a daily driver. Today people keep cars for a year or two, maybe 3 and they want something else.

Not a sports car But my 1965 Ford pick up will be with me until i die. Some cars/trucks/bikes are worth holding onto. Some people just want to try something new.

I learned to drive on a 1967 Ford Mustang. My dad said look, this thing is a death trap. He then asked me not to ruin his car. I never did and a decade and a half later he sold it. No power steering and the brakes, you had to generate your own power. No rack and pinion steering. Everybody loved that car. Now the Mustang has the duel clutch, Ford learned what I knew about 10 years ago. They are fast.

I prefer the supercar / hypercar terminology as it breaks apart the segment a bit. So to me a $300k GT2 RS is a super car along with anything like it. Where as something like a 918 or a veyron would be a hyper car.

What distinguishes a supercar from a sports car or other high performance cars though? Is it the exotic look? I would agree there that the 911's don't look as exotic as some other cars in that price range. Performance? Here I think the 911's can hang with some of the best in the world. The 911 Turbo has been known as the "supercar" daily driver for a long time. Sub 3.0s 0-60, over 200mph top speed, handles with the best of them, etc. Up until this year the Lightening Lap record was set by a 911. Seems like a pretty good argument for being a supercar. *shrugs*
