Lets look at the states that have less than 19 million people.
Also known as every fucking state other than Texas, New York, California and Florida.

19 million people is the equivalent of sending all the congress folks and senators home from these states combined
Kansas 2,919,179
New Mexico 2,109,093
Nebraska 1,960,790
Idaho 1,896,652
West Virginia 1,755,715
Hawaii 1,401,709
New Hampshire 1,378,449
Maine 1,359,677
Montana 1,093,117
Rhode Island 1,062,583
Delaware 998,619
South Dakota 902,542
North Dakota 774,008
Alaska 720,763
District of Columbia 718,355
Vermont 622,882
Wyoming 582,233

The good(?) news is Democrats have decided to fight fire with fire:

Despite the persistence of partisan gerrymandering, between 216 and 219 congressional districts, out of the 435 nationwide, appear likely to tilt toward the Democrats, according to a New York Times analysis based on recent presidential election results. An identical 216 to 219 districts appear likely to tilt toward Republicans, if the maps enacted so far withstand legal challenges. To reach a majority, a party needs to secure 218 districts.

The surprisingly fair map defies the expectations of many analysts, who had believed that the Republicans would use the redistricting process to build an overwhelming structural advantage in the House, as they did a decade ago.

The relatively fair map is something of an accident. Democrats and Republicans again drew extreme gerrymanders with twisting and turning district lines, denying many communities representation in Congress. Dozens of incumbents were shielded from serious challenges. The number of competitive districts declined.

But, unlike in previous cycles, both parties’ extreme gerrymanders have effectively canceled each other out — in no small part because Democratic lawmakers went to greater lengths to maximize their advantage. And more states are having maps drawn by courts or by nonpartisan and bipartisan commissions than in previous decades, reducing the number of districts drawn to intentionally advantage one party.

I actually wouldn’t put the blame squarely on the Trump Admin. Lord knows they tried to screw it up—but COVID was also a major factor, and even the experts say that undercounting minorities is consistent with previous censuses as well.

NYT is making a correction to original reporting - 19 million were mis-counted rather than undercounted?

FiveThirtyEight has a running tally:
So far, democrats: +11, republicans: -6, highly competitive seats: -6.

There are still more maps to finalize. So, those aren't the final numbers. But, overall, the census and gerrymandering was not as favorable to any one party as people think.

A number of states are using new processes this time around to limit the impact of gerrymandering which is why you're seeing those results. It's also why GOP held legislatures in states like MI, NC, WI are losing their shit. It's also why those processes need to be utilized in more states. The Kansas House map is really fucked up in an attempt to make sure that 1 district doesn't become competitive and a current competitive district because a GOP safe seat. They added Lawrence which is on the Eastern side of the state into the Big 1st which is basically the western half of the state just to dilute the power of those voters.

Wait, so they went from blocky districts to this Roadrunner-like shape and you think it is gerrymandering? /end sarcasm

Yeah, they cut Lawrence out of the 2nd district and a chunk of Wyandotte county out of the 3rd and added a significant rural population to the 3rd. In the most open and transparent process where there was a total of 1 or 2 days between the maps being unveiled and the vote the legislature. I guess the GOP approach is "We had to destroy the democracy, so we could save the democracy. Oh fuck it, we just wanted straight up unchecked power".

Looks at the list, thinks for a few seconds.
Bad news:
*The new Texas gerrymandered maps will remain the same as the state is not on the list.
*New York State lost 1 EV due to being 15 people short. Unfortunately this discovery does not help as the state is not on the list.

Good News:
*Belive it or not, the state of Delaware was listed as the 1st runner up in getting another EV, and thus another House Seat.

What is quite ironic is that the current governor of Kansas is a Democrat.

Mainly because the states were already heavily gerrymandered so there wasn't much to work with.

The article clearly states that the population was accurately counted.

Correct. Much ado about nothing.

That said, addressing the rest of the article, is it bad Latinos and blacks were miscounted? Of course. But thats not the point. A person is a person as far as representation is concerned.

The entire point of the census is count the population, not assign them the proper category.

Because the census isn't used for anything else besides population count.

It's not like it's used to determine voting districts or disperse federal funds to specific communities..
