Sorry I upset some people - my post looks like trolling now :( I had read this thread right before work, and in a 2-mile drive I saw a dozen SUVs with solo occupants. That I think it's unsustainable / silly and wasteful to have every 150 lb person driving a 2-3 ton SUV. Maybe it was just the timing, or I'm very lucky because I often see SUVs driven by solo drivers, not just that rare chance.

I imagine Suburbans are almost exclusively driven for family purposes and most drivers wouldn't want to take it out unless they have to. I'm not advocating any government enforcement. If someone wants to drive something that gets 10 MPG, I'm happy for them. But I still think the Suburban looks huge and boring and I bet it handles like a fridge on rollerskates.

I dunno, it makes you wonder how much it really even gets used - I take mostly the same route to work every day and see the same giant SUV's with one person in them every day. So it sits overnight for 8 hours, gets driven to work, sits there for 8 hours, and then gets driven home. Maybe picks up the kids for soccer practice and maybe goes on a trip on the weekend. It almost seems like we should have a rental system for SUV's, sort of like Zipcar where you can just check out a big car when you need it. That's how I do it with trucks - I just rent the Home Depot truck for a couple hours once in awhile when I need to move big stuff. It's annoying and not super convenient, but it also means I can drive fuel-efficient car most of the time.

But hey, it keeps the world economy rolling, right? :awe:

If it makes you feel better our full-size crossover sits in the garage unless we actually need a large vehicle. However, my wife's WRX isn't really any more cost effective to operate due to only slightly better fuel economy, requires premium fuel, has higher insurance costs and requires more maintenance. So :p

is it more wasteful to buy ANOTHER VEHICLE to pay registration/taxes/fees/insurance on on top the large vehicle you occasionally need

and the new ones get what 17/23? hardly 10MPG

speaking of wasteful.....2 mile DRIVE to work

Yeah I drive 2 miles but my car gets 60-90 mpg on my drive. Would it be less wasteful to drive 10 miles to work? lol

Also I ride my bike to work sometimes, but it's scary due to all the solo driving suburban moms texting while driving. :)

Older model all the way. The new one is fugly! There is this nasty trend with the headlights being shaped like this. It'g gotta stop. Maxima did something like this too, and many other cars as well.

Since this is slowly turning into bash SUVs thread : I hate driving behind certain SUVs and even some trucks because they completely block my vision of what's in front of them. Those unexpected brake slams, followed by a rush of adrenaline and pounding heart... let's just say I can't remember a single time that has happened when I could see multiple cars or even further down the road in front of me.

You could say the same about me just driving by me when I'm in my SUV because you don't see below the window line. Half the time I have the back end loaded with tools/equipment/whatever but it isn't above the window line so you would never know.

Stop being so judgmental over such a silly thing as what vehicle someone chooses to own and drive.

Stop tailgating. I know they still block (I have a short car too) but if you're so close that they totally block everything then you're too friggin' close. Leave some space unless you want to meet somebody's bumper or trailer hitch someday. Seriously, there are times I feel like putting a ball hitch or off road recovery hook in my SUV's receiver just so people stop hugging my bumper.

It's not situations where traffic is moving that this happens. It's always the stop go traffic. That's when I absolutely cannot see and I'm just staring at the brake lights in front of me... But when I've got a smaller car in front of me I can see the brakes light up a few cars down the road, and I can get away with using mostly engine braking to get through the traffic. And then when the person behind me realizes I'm engine braking, they actually get off my ass if they're excessively tailing me. ;)

It's just annoying to watch the monster in front of me accelerate, making me think I should accelerate as well, and then slam the brakes. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does its extremely aggravating. If the car is smaller, I can tell "they shouldn't be accelerating that much" and won't bother following wasting my gas and brake pads.

I don't hate SUVs in general. It's just that one little thing... Everything else about them I don't care much about.

I can't believe that there's still a big enough market to warrant a new Suburban. They're comfortable and spacious things, but... aren't we in the era of shitty crossovers?

That being said, one of my best friend's first cars was a '00 Suburban that was handed down from her parents. That thing was an absolutely beast. Snow? No problem. Large group of people? Also not a problem, and you can even all sit comfortably with leg room to spare. I loved that thing. Chugged gas, but it was a comfortable and spacious ride. I think her parents actually bought another one after they retired the first one.

Not sure how this is an SUV problem. I couldn't see over minivans in my civic.
