Sorry I upset some people. I had read this thread right before work, and in a 2-mile drive I saw a dozen SUVs with solo occupants. I just think it's unsustainable / silly and wasteful to have every 150 lb person driving a 2-3 ton SUV. Maybe it was just the timing, or I'm very lucky because I often see SUVs driven by solo drivers, not just that rare chance.

I imagine Suburbans are almost exclusively driven for family purposes and most drivers wouldn't want to take it out unless they have to. I'm not advocating any government enforcement. If someone wants to drive something that gets 10 MPG, I'm happy for them. But I still think the Suburban looks huge and boring and I bet it handles like a fridge on rollerskates.
I dunno, it makes you wonder how much it really even gets used - I take mostly the same route to work every day and see the same giant SUV's with one person in them every day. So it sits overnight for 8 hours, gets driven to work, sits there for 8 hours, and then gets driven home. Maybe picks up the kids for soccer practice and maybe goes on a trip on the weekend. It almost seems like we should have a rental system for SUV's, sort of like Zipcar where you can just check out a big car when you need it. That's how I do it with trucks - I just rent the Home Depot truck for a couple hours once in awhile when I need to move big stuff. It's annoying and not super convenient, but it also means I can drive fuel-efficient car most of the time.
But hey, it keeps the world economy rolling, right? :awe:

Since this is slowly turning into bash SUVs thread : I hate driving behind certain SUVs and even some trucks because they completely block my vision of what's in front of them. Those unexpected brake slams, followed by a rush of adrenaline and pounding heart... let's just say I can't remember a single time that has happened when I could see multiple cars or even further down the road in front of me.
Stop tailgating. I know they still block (I have a short car too) but if you're so close that they totally block everything then you're too friggin' close. Leave some space unless you want to meet somebody's bumper or trailer hitch someday. Seriously, there are times I feel like putting a ball hitch or off road recovery hook in my SUV's receiver just so people stop hugging my bumper.

Not sure how this is an SUV problem. I couldn't see over minivans in my civic.
This. I drive a Sonic, so pretty much everything except for motorcycles are bigger than me...
