Gasoline prices jump in California as refineries encounter trouble

The statewide average for a gallon of regular has surged 13 cents in a week. Analysts differ on when prices will begin to drop.

Problems at some of the state's fuel refineries have sent gasoline prices soaring in California just in time for the kickoff of the busy driving season.
A gallon of regular gasoline hit a statewide average of $4.196 on Thursday, up about 13 cents in a week, according to AAA. That's the highest price since March 2013.

"A couple of refinery issues have started to flare up, which is fairly normal this time of the year," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, a fuel price tracking website.

Cas Donovan said she can't wait for prices to fall. The 52-year-old Venice resident drives cross-country every summer to her vacation house in New York state. But with costs soaring, she's considering shipping her car instead and hopping on a plane to save time.

"The costs won't be too different," said Donovan, who works as an assistant director on films and TV shows. "I'm shocked."

Analysts differ on when prices will begin to drop, with estimates ranging from "when pigs fly" to "when pigs fly and strafe civilians."

Should make you happy, dude. Here's an evil rich lady who can't save money by driving cross-country to her summer home.

That example shows that either the LA Times has a sense of humor or someone is really, really tired of being assigned stupid gas price stories.

Selective quoting as usual to meet your needs :(

Ignoring
Come springtime, prices usually start rising as California refineries switch from winter-blend gasoline to a pricier blend of summer fuel, which takes longer to make and requires more expensive additives to meet environmental standards.
<Problems created by CA itself>
But problems at a few refineries in the Golden State undergoing routine spring maintenance have squeezed inventory and boosted prices, analysts said. <Maintenance is required. Otherwise Dave complains that they do not maintain in order to cause a crisis.>And only a handful of refineries outside the state are capable of making the ultra-clean type of gasoline mandated in California. <Again, a problem created by CA itself>
"A couple of refinery issues have started to flare up, which is fairly normal this time of the year," <Purpose of maintenance is to find, fix and/or prevent problem. Otherwise no need for maintenance; again Dave complains that they do not maintain in order to cause a crisis.>said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, a fuel price tracking website.
However, the refinery snags have been extensive enough to temporarily reduce gas inventories in the state 17% compared with this time last year, DeHaan said.
Aside from production issues, bad weather has also played a role in pushing up costs at the pump.<Dave's gas thugs are able to control the weather also?>

As usual you froth at the mouth and go all splodeyhead over anything that has to do with the oil industry. You want them to run their equipment at 100% capacity. Guess what happens when you run something at 90%+ capacity 24 hrs/day for days on end, over time it requires to have maintenance and sometimes repairs. However, I'm sure you would rather the refineries to run until they breakdown or explode.

Both these refineries had equipment that required repair. Repairs are sometimes lengthy as parts have to be manufactured/fabricated or the components require special welding/machining procedures. I think most would rather seen a refinery being a couple weeks late starting up rather than being down for months after a catastrophic accident.

http://www.myvalleynews.com/story/77552/

"We've had two refineries go offline longer than anticipated -- during a time when refineries should be stepping up production as demand increases approaching the summer driving season," Montgomery said.
One refinery is operated by Exxon in Torrance; the other by Tesoro in Richmond.

Normal increase due to refineries changing over to the required summer blend fuels.

http://www.oregonlive.com/commuting/index.ssf/2014/04/oregon_washington_gas_prices_e.html

Northwest gas prices continued to climb during the past week, with Oregon drivers now paying more than they did a year ago.
In fact, ahead of the May 1 deadline for refineries to switch to summer-blend gasoline, California, Washington and Oregon continue to be among the 10 most expensive states in the nation for gasoline.

The U.S. is swimming in more oil than in 40 years.

Gas should be 50 cents a gallon.

50 cent gasoline would be horrible. We'd have massive increases in driving, which means much more CO2 produced and either much more ethanol consumed (driving up food prices as arable land is converted to ethanol production) or much more MTBE in our environment. (Someone correct me if there's another common oxygenator than methyl tertiary butyl ether or ethanol, but I'm pretty sure there's not one that degrades into sunshine and pussy.)

Lower the price and there is no need to find oil.

Also reserves are not what is available for refining, just somewhere in the ground.

You want gas to be at 0.50 - 1/8 of the present price.
Can you survive on an income of 1/8 of your present income?

Good thing U.S. drivers have for decades decreased their use of gasoline via technological improvements. Of which said improvements have boosted mpg and have also given drivers alternatives to gasoline powered cars. Of course as this has occurred demand for gasoline in nations whose economies have or are coming online (e.g. China) has sky-rocketed. One could theorize that one day nations like China will be the biggest consumer of gasoline as we fall behind due to again technological improvements, consumer trends, along with their rising consumption, etc.

He'll ignore anything you say and keep posting his stupid, inane shit, because he is a stupid, inane shit. He's incapable of understanding the points you make. Let's put it this way, it would take a great deal of effort to find a more ignorant, worthless saprophyte anywhere, not just on this forum. Calling him a parasite would be an insult to all roundworms and maggots.

I suspect that he is capable; but refuses to accept anything that goes against his hatred of anything that makes money.

He failed in his business and resents anyone that tries to get ahead or succeeds.

EIA later this week is expected to release its petroleum statistics, which could push gasoline prices even higher if supplies are shown to be limited. If the supply situation stabilizes, prices at the pump could start to ease, though Green warned international factors may still come into play.

“The U.S. petroleum market is never fully isolated from events overseas,” he said. “Crude oil is a globally traded commodity, which means that U.S. consumers often pay more at the pumps because of international political instability.”

More oil than the U.S. has ever had before.

More gasoline than ever being produced and shipped out to other Countries

Yet many Americans are now paying more than $4 a gallon

110% criminal and the thugs get away with it because Americans let them.

U.S. crude supplies hit a record

The U.S. Energy Information Administration said crude stockpiles rose 3.5 million barrels for the week ended April 18.

Supplies for the week totaled 397.7 million barrels, the largest weekly total for commercial crude inventories based on EIA records going back to late August of 1982.

“We saw a larger build than expected in the [EIA] numbers reported, as well as a less-than-expected draw in unleaded gasoline,” said John Macaluso, research analyst at Tyche Capital Advisors.

The U.S. is “well supplied in crude oil... we believe the only reason crude oil prices aren’t lower is the continued situation in Ukraine,” said Macaluso.

He lacks enough intelligence to understand that taxes are the differentiating factor, on whether a gallon of gas is $3.20 or 4.20. Following the rate of inflation, gas costs the same as it did 40 years ago.

He's an idiot, and not even a useful one, at that.

You read our posts anyway, so what's the point of you keeping an ignore list? Damn, you're stupid. :\

I've been on his ignore list for years but it's funny how some of his replies are in response to my comments. If he thinks that I will stop commenting because he's posting that I'm on his ignore list, sorry to disappoint him as it will not deter me from pointing out his ignorance.

So, what, you think we could restrict exporting of oil and that would lower prices? And you're just hoping all the countries we export to will simply not notice and not affect the prices of everything we import?

See, this is the problem with liberals. They think they are so smart and know how to run the world. And then they try, and fail. And everyone else pays the price. And they blame the Koch brothers.

Either you can't read or have a comprehension problem.

The U.S. already restricts export of oil. Of course Republicans want to lift that restriction to raise oil prices even higher.

There is no such restriction on export of gasoline, that is why they use the excuse there a gas shortage for American drivers and charge the insane rate that they do to Americans while the Countries they ship the gas to pay 25 cents a gallon for it.

The Koch brothers are part of the cabal doing this so yes they are to blame.
