2013 Dodge Viper Spied

Car and Driver or some other magazine had a concept image. The headlights looked similar. Can't find a pic on the web though.

These kinds of comments seem to be invariably made by insecure little men who know that they will never be able to afford expensive cars.

^^This^^

i've never been a huge fan of the aesthetics of the viper though. the pedal layout is also really small and made for women with small feet. unless they've changed that within the last 5 years.

1) Traction control and such does not belong on a Viper. Let it continue to separate the wheat from the chaff by means of fiery death.
2) Anything less than a V10 does not belong on a Viper. I would even go so far as to say a high-revving European-style V8 would be an abomination.

I agree with both of these personally.

Realistically I'd expect that there will be driver aids, but they should be fully disabled upon going through the routine (hold your ballsack, rotate gear knob counterclockwise 8 times, recite pi backwards?).

As far as the motor, yeah the big V10 is the soul of the Viper. It's always a little odd when a motor or a configuration gets into a car that doesn't really match the legend/feel. I'm sure they can make a great V8, Turbo V6/V8, small V12, whatever, but it wouldn't quite be the same as hearing 8+ liters of screaming insanity go by. It'll be just another sports car if they really change the formula.

The Viper and the 911 are my two all time dream cars. As long as they keep making them and keeping it alive, that's great!

I totally agree with the comment on the pedals. We had one of the RT/10 roadsters come thru the shop some years ago with some rear end damage. I had a hell of a time moving it because the pedals were so close together (having boots on doesn't help either) and they seemed like they were all offset too far towards the center of the car so the brake was where the throttle normally is and the clutch where the brake normally is.

Honestly, I think people just regurgitate that because that's what the writers for the auto rags say. Meanwhile, people continue to wrap these cars around trees because they can't handle the power without driver aides.

Why would anyone drive a car like that with boots on? 😕

Much as I like the caveman aspect of the Viper - damn the common sense, full speed ahead - I don't think it makes a lick of sense to build a car with that kind of power in this era without traction and stability control.

The percentage of drivers who can safely drive a car like this aggressively is very small. The percentage of people who buy Vipers for their bad-boy image, but who lack much in the way of driving skill, is much higher. There are any number of modern cars (think BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, etc.) with driver aids that are sufficiently refined that they still permit a ton of fun with some measure of safety, and without a lot of intrusion. Obviously on a Viper it should be possible to deactivate these aids without great difficulty, but leaving them off altogether seems just insane.

My bike has TC and ABS, both can be disabled but the ABS automatically defaults to enabled every time you start the bike. TC you can choose between 4 levels and you can disable it completely if you like and it won't reset to enabled.

I've left both on and haven't had or noticed either system kick in yet in 1,600 miles and some fairly aggressive riding in the local mountains. And I have done power slides with my old bike coming off a corner, it's an ass puckering moment let me tell you because your natural instinct is to reduce throttle but if you do that the bike will try to straighten up when that rear tire regains traction and it will spit you off in what is known in motorcycling as a highside.

He said it came through the shop, one assumes that means an automotive shop, where boots are pretty much standard.

He was complaining about the pedals being too close together as though driving it with boots on would be problematic. I don't think too many Viper owners would have that problem is all I'm saying.

I dont go a day without hearing about it, it happens all the time!

<obligatory 90's catchphrase>

not.

I agree with DVC, put it on make it pushbutton to disable

Because as I said, it came through our shop for rear end damage (guy got it a little too tail happy and caught a tree with the back end.) The boots just added to it though, the pedal layout and placement is just horrible unless you have size 8 feet maybe and doesn't change the fact that they were all offset towards the center of the car.

EDIT: Also keep in mind this was a RT/10, the first generation, that had the huge ducts right by the A pillar. No idea what it's like on the later generations.

Yet you guys seem to be taking my joke as a personal affront?

I actually like the viper. Always been a fan. Though I guess the stereotype i made fun of hit close to home for some of you.

Of course any Viper fan is going to agree on both of these. Number 1 is mandated by the feds, so it's not like there's a choice there. As much as I may object in theory, in practice it will save lives (if people are smart enough to recognize their own limitations and leave it on). I doubt they're dumb enough to mess with the motor. Granted I could be wrong, & I guess we'll find out soon-ish but anybody with 1/2 a brain knows that the Viper is defined by having a massive V10.

Then again they've already stated their goal is to take the Viper more mainstream so it's hard to say what's sacred and what's not.

Viper GTS

A mainstream viper will be like mainstream punk rock, it will suck.
