Who is your pick from likely candidates (if you're a Republican)?

Also, I was thinking maybe if Palin gets the nomination she would possibly (and should) pick Dr. Rand Paul for her running mate, provided he wants to run. How likely do you think that is? She did endorse him after all, and they both have a little bit of common ground, plus Palin might be convertable away from some of her neo-con ideas. Rand will have been a successful senator for 2 years.

I want Gary Johnson to be President, other than either Dr. Paul, because Romney, Huckabee, and Palin (to a lesser degree though) are too much like Obama.

I have a ton of problems with Romney, but one that especially stands out in my mind is that he's an elitist business man, which won't contrast to expose Obama for the elitist he is who is only out to help the megarich with his wall street advisors and their policies and his pro-military industrial complex stance.

In contrast to Romney, Sarah Palin and Rand Paul have a populist image, so they would take a lot of the working/middle class vote away from Obama and expose the Democrats as the party of the elites.

As for Huckabee, he seems kind of stupid, IMO. Especially his tax reform ideas (repealing the 16th Amendment but keeping the IRS and replacing with a 30% NST)

I have little to say about this terrible crop, but one comment, if against all sanity Palin had the Repuiblican nomination, she would pick a very conventional running mate IMO, not someone on the 'fringe'.

Which lamb will they sacrifice to Obama?

At this point it's not looking like they'll pick a lamb as they have a good shot at beating him. Ofcourse the GOP has been known grasp defeat from the jaws of victory before so it's far from a lock that they'll pick a strong candidate.

There was an interesting SNL skit around '91ish. Which had famous democrats(impersonated--Phil Hartmann was Cuomo) at the time, it was called "Who's going to lose to George Bush in '92!" or something to that effect. Well, it seems that Dems figured why not sacrifice that guy from Little Rock and we'll regroup in '96. Well, that dude from Little Rock was underestimated, by everyone. Will it happen again? Only time will tell.

i can guarantee no one is underestimating sarah palin. to even assume she has functioning beta brainwaves would probably still be overestimating.

who knows. if you asked this question 2 years before the 2008 election, we'd be talking about how Hillary and Rudy are going to be slugging it out.

I sleep comfortably knowing that Sarah Palin will likely never hold an important elected office ever again. the GOP primary voters have shown no inclination to embrace the choices endorsed by the far right figureheads like Rush. don't mistake their loudness for importance. when it came time for actual voting in the last primaries, their anointed candidates failed to make any significant inroads whatsoever.

If the nomination goes to Palin, Huckabee, or Romney, I forecast the current GOP piss&pity party to continue another 4 years.

The Repub party needs to remold itself first, then worry about representation. Otherwise they're just going to continue to circle the drain as the population of conservative old people dwindles.

Kind of like in 2004 when the dems could have easily beat Bush. But they nominated the two of the most liberal members of congress to run against him. John Edwards... could you imagine a president with some baby mommas.

Republicans could nominate sarah palin and then we can say goodbye to the days when we just had $12 trillion in debt.

It will probably be best if a Republican is elected because Bush destroyed the nation and martial law, a natural for Republicans, will be required in the coming collapse to kill the looters and thieves.

All I can say is that a strong libertarian bias is present in our OP Anarchrist420 who says, "In contrast to Romney, Sarah Palin and Rand Paul have a populist image"

And all I can say, is that while Palin may be the intellectually challenged version of a populist, libertarianism has never polled over 4% in the USA. And thus pairing Ron or Rand Paul with Palin would be a sure GOP loser in 2012.

But before we all get to droolling over 2012, I somewhat point out, that if the GOP gets a confessional majority in the election of 2010, the totally clueless GOP will really screw up the American government and surely send it into a immediate tailspin.

This. There are no good Republicans right now.

If..."IF" the republicans chose a ding bat that writes memos on her hand so she can get thru her talking points, then I say BRING IT ON. :D

And that brings me to.. just how much or exactly what could one write on their limited hand space in notes, that they could not have retain in a their little brain?
Its not like one could write the US constitution on the inside your hand.
Why would one need to use their hand for writing notes?
What... "don't drool", "smile", "wink", "gay bad...gun good", bread, milk, captain crunch?

I can just see her as president meeting with some other world leader. On her hand she might write down "don't push the red button. Don’t push the red button. Don’t push the red button". :D I mean... really... And hopefully she wouldn’t get sweaty palms in that instance.
God save the queen!

It's rather pointless to speculate until the primaries actually happen. Some people are expected to run (ie Truman, Nixon, GHW Bush, etc.). Others come out of nowhere (Clinton, Eisenhower, etc.).

Since Obama will leave US with a gigantic financial mess I like Romney and Allen West for VP
I doubt Romney will spend any less--he stands for the same police state that Obama does and his wall street ties means he won't get rid of the Fed. Look at his liberal record as governor of MA.

I really don't think Romney will win the nomination, and I hope he doesn't. If he does, it'll be equivalent to another 4 years of Bush/Obama.

If Republicans want a successful businessman who is actually pro-business, then they need to look to Gary Johnson. His record as governor of NM was perfect. The statists need to give my ass break and just vote for him because the last president that wasn't a statist was Silent Cal.

The republicans have done away with any pretense of intellectualism. When Buckley died, the last of a generation of able conservatives left with him. Now we have Palins, a shadow of what might have been.

Two things must happen for Obama to lose. First the Republicans have to lose people like the quitter from Alaska. Someone who doesn't have to write "uplift americans" on their hand. That's not likely. "Homey" is trendy now.

Second, if a miracle happens and the Reps completely remake themselves, the economy may rebound by 2012, and he may not be nearly as easy to beat as some hope.

It's an uphill battle for the Reps as things stand now. There is no one of note in their party.

And now ole ararchrist420 shows exactly how clueless he is in saying, " just vote for him because "just vote for him because the last president that wasn't a statist was Silent Cal."

How damn clueless can you get? It was exactly the continuations of the policies of Harding, silent Cal, in the personna of a super achiever like Hoover that caused the Great Depression. By the time Hoover was elected, all the poison pills had been ingested, the poison had already exceeded fatal dose level, and now our OP wants to return to those bad old days?????????????????????? Is there anyone crazy enough to assume, that if College rather than Hoover had won the election of 11/1928, that the outcome of the great Depression would have been averted???????????
