Looks exactly like this, garadged and covered. I am trying to convince him to hold off on selling it till I can buy it sooo, no number ATM. HEH

Can you PM me the address/city? Does he keep the keys in it? :sneaky:

J/K 🙂

I can see it now when Clarkson does his test drive on Top Gear;

"...and to make matters worse they only give you an automatic transmission, no option for a proper manual. And while a lot of companies do that these days, BMW decided they didn't need to give it the usual two clutches, or somewhat reasonable automatic tranny, they gave it one clutch, and eight (8!) gears, that way it never makes up its damn mind and is always searching for a gear, making your life more annoying."

His review of a 7 speed Lexus actually did sound a lot like that. He didn't say the performance was bad, but he didn't like how it sounded when the rpm is always changing.

With proper funding, shouldn't they be able to build a strong variable transmission? Then instead of 8 gears you get infinite gears! Snowmobiles and quads have these and they're kinda cool.

Trying to imagine if all cars sounded like snowmobiles. I think I would have my hearing surgically disabled...

So much resistance to new technology on AnandTECH.

It may not be perfected in all cases yet, but the writing is on the wall.

Time for BMW to outsource to US Tremec transmissions if their pussy little manuals can't handle a mere 500 lbft in 2011. T56 and TR6060 can handle that without breaking a sweat.

Not like you don't have one of the best selections in the US being in South Florida. Come on man there are tons of them down there!

There are...actually there is an awesome one just down the street that I see every once in a while when it is not in the garage. It is in alpine white which is the color I'd really love...but I think it is the guys/gals daily driver...so I'm sure there are a lot of miles. I can easily get over the color for a mint condition car with low miles 🙂

Wikipedia (I know...) says the TR6060 is rated for 600 lb-ft, DINAN stage 1 tune for the 550i claims 573 lb-ft. Maybe 600 isn't enough? 😱

My factory T56 with only a 26 spline input shaft has no problem handling 601 lb-ft at the wheels with drag radials in the summer (close to approx 700 lb-ft @ 2500 RPM at the input shaft), and the TR6060 is basically an upgraded T56, that is to say the TR6060 IS a T56. And thats a instant hard hitting low RPM 601 wtq from a twin screw, not a high strung euro engine that gradually gets there.

It's the clutch, U joints, differential pinion mounts, and tires that bitch about it :awe: It's one of the most well respected and bulletproof 6MT transmissions out there on the domestic scene. Well not even the most, it's the defacto standard for a MT if you're doing a crazy build. There is nothing stronger except a drag race prepped auto.

They should put electric motors on this bitch. Trains often use diesel engines to drive generators to drive electric motors because it's infeasible to make a clutch or transmission system capable of dealing with forces of that magnitude.

Also, independently controlled electric motors = perfectly controlled all wheel drive 😉

Well, re-read the article. Nowhere it says that BMW is choosing automatic because their pussy little manuals can't handle a mere 500 lbft. It does say that BMW is choosing automatic because their DCT can't handle.

And I translate it this way: "Sorry guys, but we (BMW) didn't even consider manual as an option for new M5. Since we can't put DCT, we will put automatic ---- which majority wants anyway."

I am sure we (and people at BMW) all know there are bunch of MT that can handle the output of M5. But does it matter if they are not going to put MT anyway?

I have a friend (okay, it's a boss) with a M5. He has an auto and I kinda sorta want to make fun of him except that I would love to his car automatic or not.

My wife's car has the updated version of your car's transmission...and yes the S mode is nice for keeping the 2.0T in its prime, but it is no match for being able to shift exactly when you want. Even in manual mode, the ZF transmission is fairly responsive...but still leaves a buffer in there to make its own decisions (like when it wants to kick down).

But in a straight line, the automatic will be faster than a manual. Simply put, the computer is faster than you. You might think you can make better decisions, but I don't think that is actually true.

Not sure about expensive cars, but for cheap cars this is almost never true. On page 1 of this thread I linked to an article that compared gas mileage for automatic vs manual, but part of the article also compared 0-60. For every single car tested, the manual was faster.

0-60 you can pretty much do in 1st gear so it course it's going to be faster. But any serious 1/4 mile car has a built auto. Less worry about breaking shit, able to stall the engine and build boost off the line, faster consistent shifts, etc.

If you read the thread, I've mentioned that if I'm tracking the car exclusively, I'd want a DCT. If I'm just driving around town, I couldn't give a rats ass how much faster the automatic is at shifting than I am.

Did you buy a manual because you like manuals or did you buy a manual because you hate automatics?

I just hate automatics. Constant gear hunting, they never knows what gear to be in or what I'm trying to do. Hit the gas a bit too hard and it drops 2 gears then spins the one tire then I lift my foot off the gas and it revs down a little without picking a gear then I touch the gas again and it slams the transmission into third as hard as possible. Fucking automatics suck. If only there was some kind of system where a clutch was not needed but the gears could still be manually selected....

You and Throckmorton should have a baby that grows up to be a Mustang designer who implements auto+live axle (again).
