With apologies to DBZ, I have no flipping idea how to bench page loads, I did get the Huffington Post to come up in 11 seconds, but it may have been cached.

LOL, another couple of months and the gen 1 evo won't even be on the comparison graphs for benches... I do like the phone though, and it'll be a while before I upgrade again :) (although I still want a Dell Streak, I wish I could see one in person to see if I could live with it's size...)

DBZ, you're the one that posted a flipping video of your phone, and opened up the door to criticism, bragging about the speed.

Guess what, it's slow as hell.

You play this game of how great the BB's are, and don;t want to bench them against current phones, when you get trounced, you point to a device that's not even released yet.

WTF???

Ok, lets put the fanboy and anti-fanboy mantra down for a minute, and think logically. Are you capable of that? I'm going out on a limb, and assuming yes.

This thread is about the 2011 Blackberry lineup, is it not? Its a well known fact that RIM's 2009 and 2010 phones severely lagged behind the competition, hardware wise. When the Torch with OS6 came out, reviews said things like yea, the software improved a lot, but the hardware is holidng it back.

Ok...we've got that background information covered. Still with me? Ok, good.

Now - DBZ posts a video of old hardware, known to be underpowered, running respectable browsing time with OS6. Is it the fastest thing on the market? No - but, it did beat both phones TheStu posted, and those are high end, new phones.

Its easy to put on your anti-fanboy hat and kick and scream that the Evo is still faster, but that would be a foolish thing to do. Keep in mind that this thread is about the 2011 phones. If that old, outdated, was-underpowered-from-the-start phone can post respectable, if not world-beating numbers...isn't that an indication that a much more powerful 2011 Blackberry would do much, much better? I can guarantee you that if I powered up my old G1 with Froyo and ran that test, it would not load in 22 seconds.

Rather than cherry picking things to lash out against, or spouting childish garbage, we could try to think about things logically, realize that while OS6 is not going to be the prettiest, flashiest thing on the market, that the web browser is significantly improved (the purpose of this sub-conversation), and that the significantly improved browser, combined with significantly improved hardware, will lead to a much better overall product than RIM put out in 2010.

edit: and for what its worth, I just did the test with my Venue Pro - 32 seconds, although I have no wifi here so that's 3G. I've gotten 5Mb in speed tests from this location though, so its not THAT terrible.

I already apologized Deeko, 2 posts up...

And I'll even make you a promise, no more posts from me in RIM threads for an entire year, you-all can go crazy and we'll discuss sales figures after a calendar year when the numbers come out

Although if the Playbook is a huge failure I do reserve the right to point that out....

You're flat out wrong, IMHO. The OS6 Browser is very, very good. In fact it will re-format text all day and night when zooming, something even Safari still won't do.

sure it will beat safari in the acidtests or whatever, but that means nothing to 99% of users. what matters and is immediately apparent is that it's slower and scrolling/zooming is not as smooth as the iphone.
and the clarity sucks because BB is still using 480x320 screens in 2011.

FWIW I did a test with my Froyo powered G1, and it took 1m 23 seconds.

And BlahBlah, you see slower scrolling and zooming on a 2009 device that has no video acceleration, big whoop. The G1 would barely scroll, let alone do it as smooth as the 9700. Get over the fact that the 2011 devices will be very competitive, and you also handily omit the 800x640 displays in your mini-rant...

<--RIM hate party is that way.

Sorry, missed the apology post.

As for the Playbook, it will be a solid product, but its not going to outsell the iPad, I'm sure we can get that out of the way now. I'll be getting a free one either way

I would say very competitive compared to what RIM has released in the past. As for competitive with new 2011 smartphones? I would have to disagree. However the new BBs will be decent.

http://www.bgr.com/2011/01/14/rims-2011-blackberry-lineup/

Looks like a lot of improvement on the hardware front. The Torch wasn't really powerful enough to get the job done, the Torch 2 and Storm 3 look like they fix a lot of that. Combined with the PlayBook, RIM has a pretty decent lineup for 2011 from the looks of it.

I thought Blackberry would be dead this year....I don't know if RIm will ever make 4G for Blackberry?

RIM dead...OK, that's original. :hmm:

There will certainly be a 4G BlackBerry. The 4G version of the PlayBook is already slated for Sprint this year.
