The sharp edge on the passenger side looks dangerous.
"In case of an accident, your passenger will be cut in half"....
Weird ergonomics...

😕

Otherwise, looks all right.

Not too bad, the back doesn't look like a radical departure from the previous generation.

The front doesn't look too bad to me.

The side shot reminds of of a IS 250/350.

eeek, not my cup of tea (and this is coming from a current MZ3 owner)

I hate the big shit grin it seems to have from the front. Blugh, stop SMILING AT ME.

WTF

Front looks like a frog, but i like it. They did nothing with the rear. Sides are ok. Interior is a great improvement.

I agree. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Where does it say that?

Well this is a real disappointment. I was looking forward to seeing the first C2-based vehicle be the Mazda3, but this is a tuned C1 product, same as the first :

http://www.leftlanenews.com/mazda3.html

"The car rides on an improved version of the global Ford Focus C1 platform and is longer than the current model. Overall length is now 180.9 inches (up 3.5 inches), while width is 69.1 inches, height is 57.9 inches, and wheelbase remains 103.9 inches".

The reason this sucks, is that it's basically just a refresh that will probably be ridden at least 3-4 years, if not 5.

The Focus is preparing for global C2 for their MK3 model. 2011 is the target date. That means that the Focus will be the next-gen Mazda3, which I don't think makes the best business sense. Ford is bringing the excellent little Fiesta over to take over entry-econocar duties though, so perhaps that's their reasoning for upgrading the Focus.

The US Focus vs. UK Focus is a strange history :

UK Focus MK1 : 1998-2003
US Focus MK1 : 2000-2004 Same product as above, but fewer options
UK Focus MK2 / C1 : 2004-Current, with refreshes, same platform as C30 and Mazda3
US Focus MK1 1.5 : 2005-2007, Same as original with minor tweaking, and a move to all Duratec motors
US Focus MK1 2.0 : 2008-2010, Same as original with extensive tweaking

What exactly is wrong with the C1 platform? It's light years ahead of other small cars in that segment. Everything from handling, braking, steering, is superb. Seems like a case of if it's not broken, don't fix it. I would not be surprised if C2 had more cost cutting done to it to make it price competitive in more markets.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with C1, just that it's unfortunate that it's not being upgraded. C2 will almost certainly be even better than C1, as the Focus is sold as a premium compact car in Europe, and they won't sabotage that. Sales of RS and ST Focus are historically high, and the range offered is very impressive. Anything from a ~70hp 60mpg diesel to a 300hp turbo evo/sti-level madman is available.

I have a Focus based on the original MK1 platform, and it handles like a dream, and it's nice that it weighs only ~2550lbs. On the slate for C2 is a weight drop, chassis stiffening, and configuration support for AWD models. Mazda3 will have these as well, I really hope the refresh Mazda3 doesn't lurk around very long. I bought a refresh Focus, but I would be happy to see the C2/MK3 sooner rather than later.

Remember, MK1 (what my Focus is based on) launched in europe in '98. And C1/MK2 (what the Mazda3 and Volvo C30 is based on was launched in 2004. Either way you look at it, it's time to start getting ready for improvements.

ugh.. the front looks terrible IMO. The rear lights I don't like (ditto on the 6). The interior overall looks like a nice upgrade, but doesn't look unique.. something about the current gen appeals quite a bit to me. The steering wheel looks clutter though. Dual exhaust, yay (this a purely aesthetics yay).

why oh why mazda. oh well.
