Don't get me wrong, I think pro drivers in each car, with times averaged, and traction control off, the CTS-V should still come out on top, but ye gads that was painful to watch.

I also believe that the M5 Auto should actually come out a little faster than the 6MT model, as the shifting from SMG-III is far too quick for even an expert racer to match. And with the shlub they had driving those two cars, I think if he had been given an SMG-equipped M5, he might have even beaten the time of the 6MT CTS-V.

I agree, he was scrubbing like crazy in the M5 and sliding around in the CTS-V. Watching him slide a bit too much and then try and correct it in the Caddy was pretty noticeable. I doubt I could do any better (or even come close ;) ) without a huge amount of practice but even as unskilled as I am I think it would be a blast to give the CTS-V a bit too much gas and slide through a few corners. Breaking the rear end lose and sticking it out through a turn would have had me grinning like a mad man.

So are all the BMW homers planning a circle jerk for 2011 (2012?) when the next-gen M5 beats the 3 or 4 year old CTS-V? Maybe an ATOT meet?!

If the current M5 came out in 2005 and this CTS-V is a 2010 model seems like a 5 year difference. What did I miss?

How about an ounce of common sense? The M5 bowed in 2005 as a '06 model. The CTS-V bowed in 2008 as an '09. My rudimentary math skills tells me that's only 3 years.

It's the way it always is though, newer should be better, and when it is, it is celebrated.
I agree completely! It should be celebrated when the leader is dethroned by a newcomer. It's great competition that leads to better performance for the consumer. The problem is when fanboys throw around spurious arguments to avoid admitting the V is a better performing car.

I fully expect the next M5 to outperform the current V. As it should, considering it'll be newer and loaded with updated technology (probably way more expensive to boot). I promise I won't be here in 2012 blathering on about how the M5 barely managed to beat a 4 year old V, because it just doesn't matter. You run what you brung. If BMW manages to outperform the Caddy I say kudos to them.

Until then though, the king is dead. Long live the king!:D

older or not, the m5 obviously has a taller 2nd gear than the caddy.

regardless, neither of them hold value that well: an m5 can be had for $45k and a 1st gen CTS-V sells for civic money. but i guess so is a relatively new pontiac G8 GT (with crappier interior)!

very tempting!

No, it just isn't leading its segment in performance anymore. After years of being the king of the hill it's been edged out by Cadillac.

Overall performance or just straight line performance?

Both man. This car beats the M5 on the Nurgburgring.

I don't get why everyone is putting the M5 on such a pedestal. The CTS-V is $30K less and outperforms the M5 is every performance measure. I'd also say it looks better and the interior design is more attractive (I have to admit, I do not like at all the Bangle era interiors. E36 era were functional. E46/E39 were quality and subtle [aka Audi], All the bangle era were over complicated, badly designed, unergonomic, ugly despite the quality materials and different for the sake of being different [aka turtleneck art students took over from the previously genius engineer designs]).

Simply put, the M5 was an amazing car when it came out. The CTS-V, considering the price, performance and quality is an even bigger achievement. The M5 costs 150% the price of the CTS-V for 90% of the attractiveness and performance. We're talking about lightly modified M5 performance for M3 prices.
