2010 camry owners will get a shock.....

You have to use syntetic oil (0w20)....I can only imagine the look on my mom's face when she is charged $60 for an oil change.

I think it's still 7K.... manual actually says you can use 5w-20, but it cannot be for more than one oil change interval. I suppose you can switch back and forth if you wanted too and still keep the warranty....but yeah, I guess the whole industry is planning to do this.

Ford products have been coming with full synthetic from the factory for years; it's about time Toyota caught up.

Even cars like the Taurus / Fusion? Surprising.

That assertion will require backup...

That assertion is wrong.

Fords have been coming with Ford's synthetic blend for several years now, but it's certainly not a "full synthetic".

True, the funny thing is my Focus runs like crap if I put the Motorcraft Syn-blend 5w-20 in it.

Is it kind of a 'tickety' noise coming from the top of the motor? I noticed that on my '08 Focus with the 2.0 Duratec. When I switched to Mobil Supersyn it quietened up considerably. I switched at around 2-3k miles IIRC, maybe even sooner.

Same noise, but mine's an old SPI with 80 something or other thousand miles on it.
Switched back to regular dino 5w-30 and the noise went away. *shrug*

hmm, maybe that Ford 5W20 is just unusually thin or something. It literally sounded like I was two quarts down, but checked the fluids, and everything was where it was supposed to be. It's nice to know I'm not the only one that wasn't impressed with that oil. What did you end up switching to specifically?

It's actually normal to hear the cams working on an OHC/DOHC engine, imo. They're right there under a thin cover.

I love the sound of a DOHC engine's mechanicals.

Don't know why anyone would want to quiet it. 😀

Shell 5w-30. Nothing special at all.

4 timing chains-2 of them about 10 miles long, two tensioners, 4 chain guides-2 of them about a mile long, 4 cams, 32 roller followers, 32 hydraulic lash adjusters...

DOHC V8s are obnoxiously noisy rickety tickety mofos under 2,000 RPM at closed throttle. It can lead to extreme paranoia every time you think you hear a new noise.

But the open throttle experience at 7,000 makes up for it when everything is under maximum tension and those annoying noises go away and make way for the pleasant noises 🙂

Well, it was totally different for me, and I've had a lot of DOHC motors, most recently the 5G Prelude w/H22A. That motor just silkily purred along with incredible smoothness. Walking up to the car while it was running, you'd only hear a mild buzz from the front of the car.

With this Duratec, when I first got it, it almost sounded like something was wrong with the motor. Clickety-clackety rattle rattle. Of course once you got in it and applied throttle, it smoothed out perfectly, but it still bothered me. It was really noticeable when going through a drive-through, as the sound was amplified off the brick wall of the store/restaurant.

I know they use the 5W-20 for enhanced fuel economy, but maybe the batch that went out in my car was just unusually thin. The 5W-20 Mobil Supersyn doesn't produce anywhere near the same level of noise from this motor.

Duratec engine uses a chain. You can imagine a long segmented OHC timing chain dragging and clicking and clacking over guides, esp if the tension is a little loose.

Also depends on the head. An OHC head with rocker followers and hydraulic lash adjusters ("lifters") and misc variable cam tappets and stuff is going to be much noisier and dependent on oil weight vs. a simple shimmed "direct cam on valve" system. (well there is a "lifter" but its really just a solid cap over the valve stem to decrease the contact pressure and prevent galling).

A lot of older engines use timing belts and direct cam-valve heads. With the push to extend service intervals, newer engines are using chains, and with all the new variable valve stuff and push to squeeze every fraction of a MPG, direct cam-valve actuation is disappearing.

^^ Good info as usual. So that's why this motor is so responsive to different oil types, there's a lot of stuff going on up top that responds to variations? I dig the timing chain, I hated forking bucks and time to do timing belts on my Hondas.
