A wagon will get better than the Tiguan's 18/24 mpg. A Jetta wagon with the same drivetrain does 22/29
When I see a person in any car, I wave if I know them. If I don't, I don't give them much thought at all.
The logic of praising a person perceived by you as a free thinker, and then negatively judging someone based on your consumer-driven preconceived notions of what driving any given vehicle says about them is perplexing.
It's a conveyance. Let them drive whatever they want.
edit: personally I'd take the boring reliability and resale value of a CR-V over any VW
