I have to admit, I really like how it looks. Starts at $23,200. At 19/26 fuel economy though, I probably won't even consider it next go around though unless either the gas prices drop or we move closer to work.

If they did, I would buy it in a heartbeat. That would be my perfect car :) I'm still waiting on pricing on the new Jetta Diesel, curious to see where it stands in the lineup.

Eh? It basically is just a tall wagon, but if it serves no purpose, doesn't a wagon serve no purpose then as well? I don't follow your point.

Personally, I've never cared for the look of a wagon, I would much rather drive a mini-SUV.

It's high but has no offroad ability. If I see a guy in a "softroader" I assume he's a poser, or whipped by his wife who wants a "high driving position" and 20 cupholders for the 5 times a year she drives it. If I see a guy in a wagon I think "that dude is a free thinker". The price you pay for the lame minivan look is much worse gas mileage.

A wagon will get better than the Tiguan's 18/24 mpg. A Jetta wagon with the same drivetrain does 22/29

i don't see your logic throckmorton.

a taller wagon can be quite useful to haul more items and for taller family members; and it isn't sized like a real minivan so you get the "soccermum" stigma. This is exactly like the Mazda 5 for young families.

and your "can't go offroad" arguement is moot, no one will go ever offroad in a modern VW , not even the Tourej.

i would agree to you that the Tiguan would cannibalize the sales of Jetta Wagon and Passat Wagon though.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced pricing for their eagerly anticipated Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen starting at $21,990 and $23,590, respectively

It piqued my interest when I first saw write ups about it, but I've seen them a bit on the road over here in the UK and I don't love the look of them in person. Usually I like the look of a car better in person..but this was not the case. I'd rather buy a wagon if we decide to buy something like that for my wife next...but my wife prefers a mini-ute better.

Thanks, a little higher priced than I had hoped and a little lower fuel economy than the initial reports were saying :( Think i'll pass.

BTW - I just read that VW is using an independent third party to rate the fuel economy of the diesels, the EPA has it pegged much lower at 30/41. http://www.autoblog.com/2008/0...09-jetta-tdi-30-41mpg/

and has 10 more cubic feet of cargo space, a very small amount less passenger space, and costs less.

buying a tiguan or any other cute ute is like tattooing the word 'cock' on your forehead. it's almost as bad as buying a bmw.

You know what I love the look of?

The Audi A3.

Apparently. :roll: If you don't follow their standards for what is acceptable for people to drive you get labeled a 'cock' or are 'whipped'.

Sorry, but I find comments like those above significantly more offensive than seeing a guy driving a 'cute ute'.

If someone likes it, let them. Just because it doesn't fit into what you like, want, or even see a need for, there's no reason to be an ignorant ass and make rude stereotypical comments about them. (not directed towards Dman).

I saw one for the first time on the freeway the other day. I couldn't believe a 4door hatchback could look so good. I almost want one for my next vehicle now. One with TDI would sweet, but I'd take the 2.0T engine. Its niice.

So will the Tiguan be what the spoiled teenage girl crowd steps up to when they get pregnant right out of school and need something with more space than the Jetta?

It's probably a decent car as far as useable cargo space versus a car or wagon, but the name is kind of lame. They are ripping off the names of different peoples/tribes around the world.

Touareg= Tuareg
Tiguan = Antiguan

I don't know why but it bugs me. Feels like something a yuppy would like. They can spout off some obscure factual information regarding some Saharan tribe of people to sound more intelligent/intellectual to their friends at the country club or the Jones's down the street.

Bill Jones: "WTF is a Tiguan?"
Jarvis Adler III: "Well as a matter of fact Bill, the name is derived from the moniker for the populace of the small island nation of Antigua in the West Indies...blah blah blah so I'm better than you blah blah."
Bill Jones: "Blow it our your ass Jarvis."

When I see a person in any car, I wave if I know them. If I don't, I don't give them much thought at all.
The logic of praising a person perceived by you as a free thinker, and then negatively judging someone based on your consumer-driven preconceived notions of what driving any given vehicle says about them is perplexing.
It's a conveyance. Let them drive whatever they want.

edit: personally I'd take the boring reliability and resale value of a CR-V over any VW :)
