2008 Dodge Challenger....

You get at least 425hp, no choice of a manual, and you get to be one of 10k people to own a 08 challenger. I'm sure some of those 10k will just end up setting in garages somewhere while the owners hope the value goes up. They aren't introducing any of the lower models or any manual trans cars as 08s.

Why not use less expensive floor mats/etc and make up the $96 per vehicle, because $39,999 would probably be a prettier figure and get more people interested...

I have to agree and I think the lack of a manual is a killer for any US market vehicle.

It will cripple G8 sales initially.

Funny you say that. The reason they would make it auto is because that's what people want. People are too lazy now-a-days to shift or they have so much stop and go traffic that they want automatic. We are the minority.

They aren't having much of a problem with interest. Most are already sold and for well over $40k after markup. This is the highend bad mammer jammer limited production version of the car. The v6 is probably going to be more in the mid 20s area while the regular R/T 5.7l version will be in the lower 30s high 20s area.

Manual trans will show up in the 09 version later this year!!!!!!

Maybe I should have been more clear, for cars that are built for enthusiasts, lack of a manual option is a killer.

Sure people want slushboxes in their Camry's but in a sports car?

I agree 100% but take a look at the Mustang GT for example. There are more sales of auto than manual.

Good god. That's pretty much a close-out price on a year-end Vette. What do you get for that $40k?

That's what I paid for my 07 last June. I haven't heard anything on performance figures, but I'm willing to bet my LS2 Vette beats it in every single performance category. An 08 with the LS3 is going to widen that gap even further. I've been seeing some of those go for $39,995.

Most people are lazy. Both of the Mustang GTs I've owned had manual transmissions.

Manual seems to be gaining popularity with echo-boomer/gen-y people, it think its making a slight comeback in the future.

This car only comes in automatic because it's meant for BABY BOOMERS!

Problem is these cars are made for the enthusiast, and enthusiasts prefer manual. Old school manual with a real pedal operated clutch, not even pretend manual semi-autos.

MANUAL IN 09!!!! HOW MANY FREAKING TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT Jesus Christ. Its only the limited 10k srt8s being built as 08s just to build up demand and hype that are automatic only.

Yep, I'm also thinking that 'beats it in every single performance category' = 'wtfpwns it in every single performance category'.

Let's see, automatic SRT-8 Challenger vs. 6-Speed LS2 C06 .. this leaves me to the conclusion that the only people interested in the Challenger are old mopar-heads, collector/prospectors, or sadists. Judging from my previous experience with Dodge/Chrysler products, I'm willing to bet the quality of the Vette is far superior to boot.

Its a mustang fighter not a corvette fighter. If you want to say it gets beat by something then say it gets beat by the shelby gt500 with 500hp for the same price unless they manage to squeeze some more ponys out of that 6.1l HEMI before they actually sell them. The 5.7l R/T version and v6 version stack up a bit better against the mustang.

Wouldn't they build up more hype by being available with a manual?

Well if it's a Mustang fighter, it should be priced like one. GT500 is pretty heavy, so I'm not sure that a future 6spd Challenger wouldn't necessarily be ~ equal in most performance areas, unless it's really heavy too. I just think when you price a performance vehicle $40k+, that is not in a luxury class, you have to at least consider the Vette as a benchmark, because that's what many buyers will look at. I can hear this playing out over and over as soon as the 1st-year hype is over :

"Why should I spend $40k on this Dodge, when for the same $$ I can get this Vette which outperforms it in every single area?"

It's not like comparing it to a Porsche Boxster or other vehicle which may be slower, but offer a luxury/class pedigree for the $$$.

It's like, 'i want something that is slower, has a crappier badge, and seems to only want to cash in on retro fever'.

They will build up more hype and demand by getting them out and on the street and into the showrooms which in turn will bring in customers to look at the challenger and maybe walk out with a caravan. The platform they are built on is already setup for an automatic so build what they can and work on getting a manual in later. Trust me they aren't having any problems selling the 10k automatic only cars.

Arkaign The BEST SRT8 version is going to be $40k which goes up against the BEST MUSTANG version at $40k. The lower versions will be price around the same as the = mustang versions. Most of the Challegers they sell will be in the mid 20s and you can't buy a new vette for that.
