I can't stand these stupid award shows. It's nothing but a bunch of entertainers autofellating themselves into thinking they're doing something spectacular for the world. They talk about these great films, moving scenes etc etc. They make movies. They don't save lives, yet they put on this huge show like they're God's gift to earth.

Ain't nobody giving them awards for saving lives. They're getting awarded for their acting/filming abilities.
But hey, if you really want to watch people save lives, stop watching and threadcrapping and go watch doctors do what they do at a hospital.
I'm not watching...
And that's my entire issue with it. They get awards and fame and fortune for making movies, a lot of them bad ones, and people who actually do good work get jack.

Agreed... in a few years people will look back at it and wonder WTF was the Academy thinking...
Then again, Out of Africa and Chicago didn't deserve the accolade, either...

No chance. NCFOM represents some of the most talented modern filmmakers at the height of their art. Essentially every respected critic loved it, and Ebert even called it a "perfect" film. IMO it had no real competition as Best Picture this year, and thus its win was essentially inevitable. There will never be a time it isn't regarded as one of the finest films of the '00s, and indeed it could be argued that it's the best so far.

I call BS. NCFOM - the best film of the decade? pffft!
The Coen brothers are just niche filmmakers.
"The Man Who Wasn't There" is another excellent example. Style over substance.
Zero rewatchability.

Daniel Day Lewis FTW! There Will Be Blood was a great movie.
Debatable ... but his performance was superb.
Nah, Blood should have won, but I had No Country a very close second.

same. I thought the Coens were gonna get the big shaft this year. Even though I'm glad they won out...it did screw me over in my local pool. No free rentals for me this year 🙁
I thought There Will be Blood was more solid all around. Oh well...
Best Actor and supporting was no contest though. I like how Helen Miren just read off the winner with no pause. As if no one needed to wait.
Also glad I picked Best Actress correctly. Probably a surprise to many, but Cotillard was fantastic. Sort of a last minute switch by me...but after seeing pics of what she really looks like (omfg she's gorgeous), and comparing to her as Piaf....holy shite. I think they won for makeup too? Well-deserved.

I'm sorry, but I heartily disagree. Heck I've watched Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Raising Arzona several times each because I think they are excellent, well-made films. They are not my favourite directors, but I certainly do not just think they are 'niche' filmmakers.

I think TWBB was more focused. The traditional bio-epic that Hollywood loves, mixed in with some classic American myth and history. Also one of the greatest performances by an individual in the history of the medium. That's my take, anyway. Both were great, though.

I don't think it's fair to point out that one or two Coen Bros movies aren't stellar (the other one I don't love is The Hudsucker Proxy), when almost all of their films are so strong, and this particular one is tremendous.
What other films would you put on a level with, or above NCFOM, in the last 8 years?

Agreed. This part really bothered me, but I assumed it was being true to the novel, which I never read. Either way, I still agree it felt undeserved.

I liked all of those movies, but none of them was, IMO, as focused as NCFOM, and The Aviator and The Departed were just not as artistically ambitious. The movie that comes to my mind as maybe my favorite in the '00s is Adaptation, but I'd also put Mystic River and Brokeback Mountain in the mix. In any case I think NCFOM is as good a movie as I've seen in the past eight years.
