2005fpw Faint Verticle Line Problem

just received my replacement today. to my surprise they sent me a brand new one.

I'll report back in about 5 days when I get home and finally get to use the beast, but my initial testing didn't show any faint lines. Like I said, I only had about 10 minutes with it before I took off (gd DHL took till 4pm to deliver), but if it was a major issue I would've definitely noticed it right then. I ran Dead Pixel Buddy and went through the 5 different colors, which paints the whole screen one color. I noticed not a single dead/stuck pixel in any color, nor did I notice any faint lines against the dark, solid-color background. Of course, I could be either lucky, blind, too excited about the monster to notice a small imperfection, or just not have had enough time to examine the display, or a combination of any of those!

It doesn't matter what the pixel clock is. I already tried 1680x1050 at 146 and 146.25 Mhz. The wavy lines get smaller and move faster, but it doesn't fix it. If you're not really picky, then you can adjust your refresh rate to a different value (like 60.3 Hz or something), and it will diminish the effect of the distortion. The main reason I'm sending mine back is severe backlight leakage. I think I can settle with a wavy line as long as I can adjust it. I'm still not happy about it though.

Did you use Powerstrip with the ATI drivers? Powerstrip can still be capped by the ATI drivers, which do not allow the DVI to run beyond the monitors specified pixel clock. The Nvidia drivers are more customizable in this regard. From what I have heard, everyone with an Nvidia card has been able to get rid of the problem by disabling reduced blanking.

So I finally got to check out the two 2005fpw's that I ordered during end of July sale.

Both are July REV A02 Mexico. My test platform is the latest 12" iBook with a Ati 9550 32 Mb VRAM runninng OSX Tiger. This platform doesn't have DVI out so I can only test with VGA for now. I'll only be able to check DVI after I get these displays back home in Canada (Monday).

Anyway, at 1680x1050 resolution, 60 Hz Refresh Rate, VGA connection, I see no faint/moving/wavy/vertical lines across the left side of the screen when viewing www.xfire.com. This is true for both displays. Also no dead pixels and backlight leakage I can notice.

so why no lines? Possible explanations:

1) I got lucky and received 2/2 good displays
2) I'm not sensitive enought to pick up defects
3) I'm not on DVI yet (but some of you say you have the problem on VGA too)

Anyway, when I get home in Canada I'll be able to be able to provide you with a more info. I will use DVI on an Ati 9500 pro...so if there are these lines problems with my displays I will definitely see them with that test platform (DVI+ATI card).

Really? I didn't realize. What do I do then, to get past the ATI drivers?

Wait a sec. I just checked the OSD, and the refresh rate is 74 Hz. It seems like Powerstrip did the trick. And yet the waves are still there. Or does it have to be exactly 75 Hz?

I was going to try, but since it is moving, I don't know if a picture can show. It is like you see horizontal lines on the left hand side of the monitor right by the edge. Try http://www.xfire.com/xf/index.php and you will see dark blue line, light blue line, dark blue line, light blue line and etc on the left hand side going up on the screen(or down) and they fill the whole left hand side. The length is about 1 to 1 1/2 inches long. I hope you get the picture...hehe
