If there really is a testing department, I will definitely make a request for that. Do you think it would be possible to request a new item from an older revision? These new A02s seem to have even more problems than the A01s!

I am thinking of the following:
I am hoping to get a new one next week. Why don't I report back to see if I will get a good one from their "Testing" department. If my new one is really "perfect". Then, you can make the effort to request Dell's "testing" department to test it before sending a new one to you. What do you think?

OK...here is what is happening now. Dell shipped out the new monitor at 9:07AM yesterday. I don't think it went through any testing since I don't think the testing department works 24 hrs/day. I talked to the rep. at 11:30PM the night before. So, I think I am getting the same kind of monitor with wavy lines....sigh...

They shipped it overnight express. So, I will get it this afternoon. I will report back tonight.

Hello folks,

I've been following this thread. I ordered two 2005FPWs at the same time you all did (end of July sale). They have been delivered to a friend's place in Cleveland and I am going down there tomorrow (from Toronto) to pick them up. I'll only be able to check it out on VGA when I am there cuz my iBook doesn't have DVI.

If I see defects when I am in Cleveland I'll just return them for a refund cuz I can't do the 21 days return thing. If I see no dead pixels or siginificant backlight I'll bring them back to Canada and hook them up to my ATI 9500pro via DVI.

Now my dilemma is regarding these faint lines. I'll try to look for them when in Cleveland but I don't know if I'll see them on VGA. Then when I bring them back to Canada and hook up to DVI I might notice the lines but I won't be able to go through the return process.

So how noticeable are these lines? And how bad are they really? Can one of you guys post a screen shot in this thread since I don't see one yet?

Thanks,
Siva

Hi cwf, I hooked up my 3 monitors to an old Dell laptop throught VGA(for testing prupose to make sure it is not my new ATI X800XL video card problem) and set the resolution to 1280x1024. I could see the wavy lines on the left hand side. You can see them in certain colors like dark gray or try this website that OP posted: http://www.xfire.com/xf/index.php

You can really see that from a couple of feet away from the monitor. My first and 2nd monitors are very noticable. The third one is better but you can see still them from a distance on certain colors. I can't choose whatever desktop background I want now since a lot of them that I like are either in blue or dark gray color and the wavy lines are very visible.

I don't know if I am unlucky to get 3 defected monitors in a row. However, I am hoping the 4th one will be a good one.

I don't know if a picture will show or not since the wavy lines are moving. I will see if I can get a picture for it.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

I don't know. I wish they would do some "testing" before shipping it out. I didn't ask for overnight shipping.

Thats because your running at a lower pixel clock (the resolution is only 1280x1024). The reason the problem goes away on VGA is because VGA is running at a higher pixel clock then DVI. Most likely if you ran at 1680x1050 with VGA the problem would go away.

Myrcgarage, did you set the resolution to 1280x1024 because the laptop won't go higher? Thats my guess why you tested at non-native resolution.

Anyway, I'll post my observations after I test my displays tomorrow night.

Yep, it is an old laptop. It can only do 1280 x 1024 with this monitor. However, either there is a defected part or somehow something is not set right, that's why if you run DVI, it is not running at the right frequency.

i'm currently talking to a dell rep and he is not allowing for a refund b/c it's outside 21 days. however, i previously talked to another rep and he said under special conditions dell would give you a refund. i even have a chat log from that rep.

It doesn't matter what the pixel clock is. I already tried 1680x1050 at 146 and 146.25 Mhz. The wavy lines get smaller and move faster, but it doesn't fix it. If you're not really picky, then you can adjust your refresh rate to a different value (like 60.3 Hz or something), and it will diminish the effect of the distortion. The main reason I'm sending mine back is severe backlight leakage. I think I can settle with a wavy line as long as I can adjust it. I'm still not happy about it though.

after talking with the dell for more than 2 hours. they will not allow for a refund because of the 21 days policy. they will, however, dispatch me another replacement. i was misinformed by a previous agent and dell offered me a $75 coupon. =\

edit: i tested the vga on the 2nd replacement and the colors are all washed out. then i tried plugging the vga cable on my original monitor just to see if it's my video card problem. there were no problems using vga on my original. the replacement they sent me had a defective vga connection. this is redicilous.

Guess what! still there...but this one is better than the 3rd one...no dead pixel. But I can't tell if there is backlight since it is still bright outside...

It has no backlight and very little wavy lines for like 2 kinds of colors. So, I think I will keep this one.
