you're comparing apples and oragnes. At least many of the people in this thread have driven a car that can be said to have 80-90% of the same handling charactersics (93-04 mustangs).... I'll bet my account that you've never driven a GTO... nor anything like it since it's an all new car. There are no previous models to judge its reliability on.... and we're talking about two whole different price classes...

I agree about the different price classes, but he's never driven a 05 Mustang either. The only person here who has is Quixfire. So he's wrong in his opinion because he based his opinion on the characteristics that interest him?

I'd hit it...but I like the other-Ford's nice sports offering more...

Of course, I'm talking about the uber-sexy RX-8...I'll own one someday...someday...

I'm a firm believer that vehicle designs shoudl be evolutionary, and IMHO, this is not. Look at the Beetle or PT cruiser - both are going to be VERY difficult to update when the next product cycle comes along.

Why should it be hard?
They just design a new model just like with anything else.

Because the retro designs are spot on, any new iteration of a retro design has a strong chance of killing off the car name - VW has already expressed concerns over the difficulty of updating such an iconic design such as the beetle, even suggesting that the new beetle will just be a one run production vehicle, with no updates.

I personally think that the new mustang will get old very fast, leaving ford with a potential lame duck late in the production run, forcing ford to crank out a new version of the mustang sooner.
I can't wait for the retro Mustang II!

Whats so wrong about it? It looks MUCH better than the Mustang (my opinion), and offers superior performance. Heck, at least when I drive down the road I won't have to see 3 at every stoplight.

It looks just like a Grand Prix. It's a complete and utter disgrace to it's namesake.

The GTO was nothing but a bland Le Mans with huge engine and a hoodscoop. To say it's a disgrace to its namesake would seem to imply the new GTO is neither faster or better handling then its ancestor - which is complete rubbish.

Its similar in apperance, but thats how almost all Pontiacs are. Many brands carry there "distinctive" marks so you know its their car. Look at BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Chevrolet, and a few others. You look at the front, and you know its that brand.

I believe the GTO is a nice looking car, inside and out. Yes, it has similar traits to other Pontiacs, but thats not always a bad thing. It just looks very clean and nice. 2005 GTO will have some hood scoops, so hopefully that'll bring a little flare to the little-too-clean design of the new GTO.

Performance is superior to the Mustang in just about every way. Aside from the 2004 Cobra's, which are rated at 390hp, the Mustang has nothing on the current GTO which pushes out 350hp, and even then, the Cobra only has it on a straight line. The GTO has superior suspension and handling to all Mustang models.

If you want to go foward a year, GM has announced that the 2005 GTO will be using the LS2 which is used in the next generation Corvette, which generates 400hp. More than the previous generation's Cobra, and more than the top of the line next generation GT.

If I like the styling of the GTO over the Mustang, and the performance is better, if the price difference doesn't bother me, why shouldn't I get the GTO over the Mustang?

1) I'm almost sold on the looks. I like the interior design and most of the exterior and it has an excellent presence standing next to it. Its the fascia where it falls apart for me. The headlights and grill don't integrate well with the rest of the car.

2) I understand the live axle is stronger and better for drag racing, but I feel more folks would be better off with the added stability and road feel of the IRS. Using drag racing to justify saving a few hundred dollars on materials for the IRS is a load of crap. Not a big deal, really, as it seems the Mustang just isn't for me.

But then again, they're really not even in the same price range.

I've always believed the Mustang was a completely overrated car, from the old 5.0 to the 4.6 we have now. The new Cobra we have now isn't bad, espically for its price, but its suspension still needs some work.

The new one appears to be much better than the others, but I still believe its overrated by the masses.

I think the GTO is nicer also, but that's just me.
I also agree the Mustang is just too common to love, but it's cheap speed, and that's why it sells.. meh!

Agreed. Sometimes I think that people expected the new GTO to look outrageous or something like the F-Body did. Well.. the old GTO was nothing more than what you said, and really wasn't that flashy either. Next year is gettin the hood scoops in some form, and I've heard rumors of the LS2 being dropped in there, which would be nice. I've sat in one and the interior materials are great.. and the numbers probve it is faster, better handler, better fit/finish, etc.. than the old GTO ever was. I've been promised a test drive by a dealer that I know so I'm lookin forward to takin that Black/Red 6-spd for a cruise.

Someone also mentioned theres nothing to guage reliability on.. well look no further than Aussie's Monaro because it is the same car (thought everyone knew that by now), engine, etc.. only a few things have been changed to make it US street legal.

It was already confirmed and on GM's website that it will have the LS2 for 2005.

ehh, id buy the GTO and get Lingenfelter to send me all the "stage 1" upgrades to it, for under 5 grand more i could drop a full second off 0-60 or for 20 grand more put about 700 horsepower in the puppy.

The photos for the GTO were somewhat opposite to me.. they didn't do a whole lot for the exterior. But after seeing them in person, it still turns my head every time I've seen one drive bye. Which is another bonus.. I've only seen a handful of these cars since they've been out, and with the mustangs.. you'll see countless numbers of them soon after release.

And it's good to see that the LS2 is confirmed for '05.

Are you guys forgetting who makes the GTO? The same people who make the Aztec... Pontiac = bleh. Also, why did they model the GTO exactly after all of Chrystler's Sebring?

Actually the GTO is coming straight out of Australia. It's a rebadged Holden.

I think it looks like crap. Like someone stuck classic Mustang parts on a modern 'Stang.

I'm not a huge fan of this new mustang...although I was not a huge fan of the previous model either. I do admit this one is nicer looking than the previous model.

I would definitely take the GTO over this car though. The GTO isn't the most beautiful car on the road, but it is decent looking (non-descript) and really has a quality engine and trans.

If they pop that LS2 in the engine bay...makes it even more desireable. The interior is pretty decent for a GM car too.

I think the new mustang is pretty cool, but I'd hate to buy version 1.0 of anything. I just got a 2002 mustang gt and I love it.
