sigh. such a toughie.

you guys must realize that there is simply no fighting the power of teenage girls' attraction to anything with a VW badge on it, especially a jetta (which must ALWAYS be pronounced with a valley girl accent). "but daddy, it's so cute and sporty!" (use valley girl accent on that one, too).

yes, jettas pretty much suck. they don't care. they don't care that you could get a faster, more reliable, cheaper car. they just want a jetta and they will throw a big, fat, my-super-sweet-sixteen tantrum if they don't get it, because it's like an ipod for the HS parking lot, and they just HAVE to keep up with Jenny, who already got HER Jetta.

so buy the jetta and tell her she pays for maintenence. tell her she has to deal with the tow company when it breaks down. and oh yes, it will break down. it will be traumatic. the tow driver will hit on her. she'll want to die. and then she'll want a different car (hopefully). and in the meantime, the car will be pretty safe in an accident and the brakes tend to be really good.

i can't tell you how many times in high school and college i had to come rescue female friends from their dead Jettas and Cabrios. they are notorious for just stopping for no reason. then they'll magically start working again in 35 minutes. or they'll refuse to so much as turn over, so you go get something to eat and come back and it runs fine. the stereo speakers will only work if you say a little prayer for them. they will be buzzy on the freeway. good luck finding third on the tranny. etc.

Believe me, I would no more recommend a 3000lbs 115HP car.....
Hell, my 165HP 3300lbs car isn't that quick, I can't imagine what that car is like. Ugh; and get crappy mileage too.

My 1.8t gets ~31-32 Highway, ~23-25 City.
And uses premium gas. And the car has a price premium over the GL 2.0. And is probably harder to find. I just think they should've avoided VW altogether for their needs, but the daughter is calling the shots

Hell no it doesn't. I only put 87 in mine, never a problem.
Really? First I've ever heard of a turbo not using 93. Does VW call for 93?

yes it does. my passat 1.8T requires premium. WTH are you doing with regular, excelsior?

Good god! I can't believe my car hasn't exploded by now. :p

Noted though. I'll try some premium next time I fill up.

I've found I get an extra 50 gallons out of a tank using Premium gas, and the performance is MUCH better. I don't know if I just got a freak or what, but I've consistantly gotten 35 mpg out of my 1.8T for the year I've had it.

What year is yours?

Regular accidentally got put in my wife's 2002 1.8T one time. That car was a dog with regular. We put premium in it the next time and it pepped right back up.

Well I'll be damned. My father (who is actually really good with cars, and did a lot of the work on our passats since we bought them wrecked) has always used regular. I just figured that it worked for him, so I'd use it too. However, I have noticed that my 1.8t doesn't have enougn oomph, you know?

If I realize that all this time using regular has limited my cars performance I'll be pissed..and happy at the same time.

Try resetting the ECU too. It'll be like a whole new engine

Reset the ECU? How would I do that?

*smacks forehead* I only wish I was almost on E so I could go fill up with premium, just to test.

Generally you unplug the battery and let the car sit overnight (opinions vary on how long you need to let it sit). Then plug it back up and the car will re-learn how you drive.

Yep. Not only do you lose performance using regular, but you're actually losing money, because you get better gas mileage with premium.

I drive a 2001 btw

Speaking from experience or here say? If from experience, then you're wrong. I've had four Vdubs. Two GTI's and two Jetta's. All MK2's. Two of the three went past 240k with no major problems. The other one had 139k when I sold her (Needed the money). Honestly, if you don't know what you're talking about, please keep your comments to yourself.

Now back to the topic. I would definitley get a different car, not because it's a VW, but because it's a GL. Yes, they are slow. Bottom lined cars. If the father is thinking more of the lines VW, I would, like others have said, go for a 1.8T if it's possible.

I've had three VW's now, ALL were utter CRAP.
2000 Jetta
2001.5 Passat
2002 Passat

Electrical problems, engine problems, things all over the car would break and magically, not be covered under their bumper to bumper warranty. To be honest, its way to many problems to even list here (i did so in a thread awhile back and it was LONG). Needless to say, each of the cars was in the shop with something wrong every 10-15k miles, it was insane.

I will NEVER buy another VW. Fun to drive, but god, what a POS. Don't even get me started on the dealers, they were almost worse than the car itself.

No offense to hispanics, but $10 says they were built in Mexico. When the first of the MK3's came out my sister had purchased a Jetta that had the same issues you described. Even once, one of the seat brackets broke on her while she was driving, it too was made in Mexico.

Everyone's saying the slowness is a BAD thing. I would think for a 17 year old girl, the slower the better. The fact that she actually wants the car is icing on the cake! :p

lol typical VW owner. "yeah the engine fell out, the doors are rusting off, a mouse popped out of the air conditioner and the transmission blew up, but it looks so sleek!"

i hate to tell you this, but the computer is constantly monitoring tolerances in the engine and adjusting the fuel map accordingly.

Sadly, I would hate to be thrown in with that group. For some reason my 99 Passat honestly has not had any problems (despite my father and me using regular gas in it) in all of the 95k miles it has been driven; and it was a wrecked car that he fixed.

What really pisses me off is that instead of working hard on QC, VW decided they should try to build the Phaeton. What a waste of research, time, money.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the way VWs look? I think they look too cheap and plastic-y.

Are you talking about the new ones? Otherwise, I think many would disagree with you. Even NFS4 said that he liked the B5 body style (I think he said that..).
