They want a cheap, reliable, economical car; so the 1.8T and VR6 are probably not options, although mostly due to the fact that they need a good deal and this one is already lined up.
Believe me, I would no more recommend a 3000lbs 115HP car.....
Hell, my 165HP 3300lbs car isn't that quick, I can't imagine what that car is like. Ugh; and get crappy mileage too.
My 1.8t gets ~31-32 Highway, ~23-25 City.
Hell no it doesn't. I only put 87 in mine, never a problem.
yes it does. my passat 1.8T requires premium. WTH are you doing with regular, excelsior?

Try resetting the ECU too. It'll be like a whole new engineOriginally posted by: Excelsior

Well I'll be damned. My father (who is actually really good with cars, and did a lot of the work on our passats since we bought them wrecked) has always used regular. I just figured that it worked for him, so I'd use it too. However, I have noticed that my 1.8t doesn't have enougn oomph, you know?
If I realize that all this time using regular has limited my cars performance I'll be pissed..and happy at the same time.

Generally you unplug the battery and let the car sit overnight (opinions vary on how long you need to let it sit). Then plug it back up and the car will re-learn how you drive.Originally posted by: Excelsior

Reset the ECU? How would I do that?
*smacks forehead* I only wish I was almost on E so I could go fill up with premium, just to test.
Yep. Not only do you lose performance using regular, but you're actually losing money, because you get better gas mileage with premium.Originally posted by: fbrdphreak

I've had three VW's now, ALL were utter CRAP.
2000 Jetta
2001.5 Passat
2002 Passat
Electrical problems, engine problems, things all over the car would break and magically, not be covered under their bumper to bumper warranty. To be honest, its way to many problems to even list here (i did so in a thread awhile back and it was LONG). Needless to say, each of the cars was in the shop with something wrong every 10-15k miles, it was insane.
I will NEVER buy another VW. Fun to drive, but god, what a POS. Don't even get me started on the dealers, they were almost worse than the car itself.

i hate to tell you this, but the computer is constantly monitoring tolerances in the engine and adjusting the fuel map accordingly.Originally posted by: fbrdphreak

lol typical VW owner. "yeah the engine fell out, the doors are rusting off, a mouse popped out of the air conditioner and the transmission blew up, but it looks so sleek!"

Speaking from experience or here say? If from experience, then you're wrong. I've had four Vdubs. Two GTI's and two Jetta's. All MK2's. Two of the three went past 240k with no major problems. The other one had 139k when I sold her (Needed the money). Honestly, if you don't know what you're talking about, please keep your comments to yourself.
Now back to the topic. I would definitley get a different car, not because it's a VW, but because it's a GL. Yes, they are slow. Bottom lined cars. If the father is thinking more of the lines VW, I would, like others have said, go for a 1.8T if it's possible.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the way VWs look? I think they look too cheap and plastic-y.
