I step in the right direction along with the CTS..that new SRX sedan looks pretty sweet too.
Personally i'd dish out another 10g's for the SL- but quite honestly if I had 75-100k to spend on a car neither of these would be in my radar screen.
Why would you be so compelled to buy a car for $10k more that not only doesn't out-perform the Cadillac, but also ranks lower in Initial quality rankings Caddy #2 - Benz #10+?)
If you're judging cars strictly on performance why not buy a Z06 which is cheaper and performs better?
If I was arrogant enough to drive one of these two cars I'd probably buy one every few years. The resale on a SL500 would be significantly higher than on tha XLR.
Am I? A luxo convertable is much different than al all-out sports car, but I'd care about performance in any type of car that I care about. Performance isn't everything, but it tops my list. And I doubt you have to be arrogant drive a car such as the SL500 or the XLR. The SL500 will probably have a better resale value than the XLR, but if you really buy a car and think about selling it, then "whatever floats your boat". I doubt you will be driving your 3rd-4th car, and probably a weekend driver at that, many miles a year. My guess is that a lot of people will hang on to these cars, and at least past the point where resale takes the biggest hit (first couple years). Cadillac is only pumping out 5k of these a year, and claims to have a waiting list already. So the interest is there, and I'm not so sure resale will be a huge issue with this type of car.
If performance is at the top of your list the XLR or SL500 shouldn't be.

As far as the "arrogant" factor it is definitely there with a car like the XLR or SL500. Neither of these cars do anything very impressive. You can't tell me that 75-85k went into engineering the "perfect mix of luxury and performance." It's priced at 75-85 for rich people to buy and try to flaunt their stuff. A car like the SL or XLR isn't about performance OR luxury. It's about showing your stuff off- there are more luxorious cars out there and better performing cars out there for more money. In this sense benz is definitely a lot higher up the "status quo" than cadillac. Even cars like BMW's are considered "so-so" by the types of people who are looking to buy these types of cars. Point being, if I was some stupid celebrity trying to show my stuff off, the benz would bring in a lot more wow and head turning than the XLR.

As far as resale value, it's not about what floats peoples boats, It's about common sense. When you buy an asset like a car (especially when its worth more than most peoples houses) you want it to hold its value over time. If I'm spending $85,000 on an item, in 5 years when whatever the hot new car is out, i'd rather pocket 60k than 30k. The XLR and SL500 arent enthusiast cars. They both suck, but for the arrogant buyer who wants to show his stuff off and turn some heads, the SL is the clear winner. I can see what you're saying about holding on to a car for a long time, but an XLR or SL buyer isn't looking to do this- they're looking to turn some heads. It's just throwing your money down the trash to spend 75-85k on an item and then for whatever reason you want to sell it or whatnot one car is worth way more than the other. I guess these rich people wouldn't care about that either though- or maybe they would.. They will care about more "normal" people buying the less expensive car down the line.
