You are one of the smarter folks here (seriously), I'm sure you can wrap your head around it. Watch it again. 🙂

THEN, watch 2010; you'll be awestruck at the end. The "concept" is incredible. One of the best movies, ever.

I completely agree.

Seriosly. I watched it, went WTF and then researched online. I found a few webpages and went "OOOOOH, OMG BEST MOVIE EVAR!"

I need to watch it again now that I understand

The baby is the human race being reborn, into another leap in technological step. The movie started out as apes are on the planet they discover they can use tools to make their life easier (the bones). This is a step in technology. Then we explore space we explore and we find a way to travel faster than light(all the weird colors) this envokes a new technological step thus the baby is being born. The old man confined in the room(to one planet) dies (the old generation).

my bad I R WRONG

Well, this is my second time seeing it...fist time seeing it all the way through. The first time I watched it, I got through to where they first land on the surface of the moon and lost interest.

Tonight I watched it and actually got scared once HAL started fvckin' with stuff. Once he started reading lips, I got chills for some reason😱

I just recently saw it again on AMC, and it was the original theatrical release I think. It was presented with no commercials, and it actually had an intermission screen in the middle.

Dave: "Open the pod bay doors please."

HAL: "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Another favorite is when he starts singing as Dave deactivates him...

"Daisy...Daisy.."

The most impressive thing IMO is that the movie was made in 1968...the effects were amazing for that time period IMO.

Also, it has a similar feel to other Kubrick movies like the Shining....

it can be argued that the monolith represents god. everytime it appears something spectacular happens (like the apes learning to use tools). Watch 2010 and it'll explain things a lot better. It also explains why HAL malfunctioned like he did.

Time to visit a psychiatrist! 😛

HAL goes insane because he's being given conflicting orders and has to hide the true purpose of the mission from the crew.

Read all the books (you could skip the 3rd, but I didn't think it was that bad). In 3001 A.C. Clarke reveals all.

It's not what you think.😉

Not that this has any bearing on the real movie but some other director made another release called 2010 I believe, that has some of the same characters, and goes more in depth to why HAL did what he did. But keep in mind its not made by Kubrick.

But was anything spectacular really going on when it was discovered on the moon? I mean, what was the "leap" in technology from that point to the next? The next sceen takes place 18 months later so I don't quite understand the significance of the moon encounter. But then again, it didn't just "appear" like before. It was buried.

Yep, I actually read the whole series years before I first saw the movie. Clarke seems to have had a thing for that, as I read Childhood's End back in high school and from what I recall, it was a similar theme.
Heh, thinking about it, I actually bought 3001 first because I was about to get on a plane, so I read that one then went through the rest in proper order.

The entire series is built on a short story which clark had written in 1957 (?) called "The Sentinel"

You are correct.

And this is one of the very few times that the movie (2001) was much better than book that Clarke later wrote.

The movie leaves a lot more to the imagination. Are the monoliths from "God" (like the tablets of the 10 commandments), or some sort of "sign post" marking a momenteous occurance. The advances weren't so much technological as they were advancements in thought and concsiousness; it wasn't the bone club -- it was the ability to think at that next level!

Unfortunately, Clarke went on to compound the error by writing sequel after sequel. Ruined the concept of Rama the same way. Read the very early Clarke; skip the rest for his sake!
