56-bit symmetrical encryption has the final bullet put through it when Distributed.net completes the CSC challenge in 62 days, checking virtually every key in the process. It was only after the constant and repeated breaking of 56-bit ciphers that higher grade encryption was finally approved for export outside of the United States.
Although the historical stats were not kept, Team AnandTech placed in the top 10; at number 7 specifically if I remember correctly.

But, atleast one positive thing compared to later cheaters are, the cheaters themselves tells they've been cheating...
